The Fashiontribes Fashion Week 15: Your Insider Guide to What to See & Where to Be Seen
Unlike the dreaded Freshman Fifteen, the Fashiontribes Fashion Week Fifteen is guaranteed not to alter your dress size! In fact, with all the partying, running around smartly, and schmoozing, you may even go down one. As FW kicks off, one trend we're hoping to see more of this Spring 2011? Way more color than last season, and happily, if the Spring 2011 Fashion Color Forecast is correct – there's hope!
Oh, and be sure to follow us on Twitter @Fashiontribes and come along with us to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – now in its brand spankin' new location of…
1. Damrosch Park/Lincoln Center In addition to a new address further uptown from Bryant Park, MBFW also received a much-needed makeover with airport style check-ins replacing the dreary scrums with clipboard-wielding, headset-armed PR intern/flacks types.
2. Milk Studios Smaller in scale and perfect for many of the up-and-comers to display their collections, it's the Hershey's Kiss to Damrosch Park's chewy nougat. Based on our stack of show invites, we'll be getting kissed…a lot.
3. Fashion’s Night Out The follow up to last year's Fashion Week experiment has now turned into a global event involving chic cities all over the world. On Friday, September 10th from 6-11pm, there will be Djs spinning, fashion popping, and credit cards exploring their outer limits. Be sure you're following us on Twitter (@Fashiontribes) so we can sneak you into some of the exclusive FNO events at Missoni, Bally (shoes), and Tom Ford at B-G (fragrance).
4. Afternoon Tea with Milla Jovovich Mercedes-Benz is sponsoring an afternoon high tea with their brand ambassador Milla Jovovich, fashion photographer Miles Aldridge, and milliner Philip Treacy who will be debuting a custom designed hat for the event. As guests at the event we have been encouraged to express our style by wearing our favorite hat or extravagant accessory. Now where's that fur-trimmed fedora?
5. The NYC Subway After many, many trips to and from Bryant Park, you learn all the shortcuts & tricks to getting to downtown shows & back again in the shortest amount of time possible. By the end of this Fashion Week, we anticipate being on a first-name basis with the 1,2, 3 and A,C and E lines.
6. Luca Luca Raul Melgoza continues finding inspiration in architecture; for Spring 2011, he looked to the iconic sail design of the Sydney Opera. Look for floaty fabrics and sheer shades blue, pink, and coral, with textural contrasts & details including coarse rope & mesh netting.
7. Perry Ellis Thanks to John Crocco, Perry Ellis is relevant again. Fall 2010 was one of the best men’s collections and we eagerly await the direction for spring. Our prediction? Another step closer to the top of the men’s fashion heap.
8. Perry Ellis After Party at Atlantic Grill at Lincoln Center Fashionistas, fashionistos, and foodies alike are all looking forward to checking out the debut of this new seafood eatery right next to Damrosch Park where Chris Lim and sushi chef Chef “Mike” Lim will make it easy to go from maki to mahi-mahi and anywhere else your
seafood lovin’ heart desires.
9. Marc Jacobs Everyone was pretty much unanimous about the fact that their fave Fall 2010 show was MJ. However, with his brilliant use of the browns, beiges, and blacks last February, we can only wonder where he's headed with the lighter palette so many of his fellow designers seem to be working in. Will he surprise us? Probably, yes. Tune in on Monday night, September 13th for the answer.
10. GANT by Michael Bastian For Spring 2011, we will see what Bastian's vision is for a women’s line, when it shows ext to the men’s. Probably similar in architecture & color, but with different fabrics.
11. TDWWSUOOF (The Designer Who Will Sweep Us Off Our Feet) Every Fashion Week, one dark design horse appears seemingly out of nowhere to shock & awe. They usually are NOT at a runway show, but at a more intimate presentation where you can take some time to view the entire collection and appreciate the details. Last February, TDWWSUOOF was Petrou/Man. This season, somewhere between Siki Im and Rebecca Moses, we look forward to finding ourselves completely smitten.
12. Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge A VIP backstage pass for all of MBFW means a welcome respite from the hustle & bustle out front, not to mention the chance to chat with many of the trendsetters in a quiet space. Model & designer Iman will be debuting fabrics from her new Home Collection in the Lounge which is being overseen by acclaimed interior designer Carlos Mota.
13. ELLE & Bloomingdale’s Shopping Event Although it's already next spring at Fashion Week, you still have to get dressed for the current season. At Bloomies on 59th Street, ELLE editors will be on hand to dish out tips on what to wear and where to wear it this fall, along with the chance to win 8 one-of-a-kind travel trunks, an iPad, and
even 00 worth of stylish travel must-haves. Of course, a DJ, cocktails, hors do'oeuvres and a spot of shopping won't hurt, either.
14. Magnolia Bakery Cupcakes Yes, the very ones made famous by Sex and the City! However, the nearby Upper West Side branch is far less crowded than the West Village original – meaning: a quick and easy Carrie Bradshaw-approved sugar rush while rushing between shows.
15. Functional Footwear From the top of your head to the tip of your toes, fashion counts…provided you can still walk straight. Whether you're standing in line to check in at shows or just standing around rubbing shoulders between shows, the operative word is standing. And standing. And standing. So when we can no longer feel our feet, we reach for the trusty Merrell Codas. More hiking boot than shoe, they're still respectable enough for Fashion Week.
