Favourite NYFW shows: No3, Rodarte
Written by Adele Booth

There’s something endearingly optimistic about using such shades of blue in a fashion collection. These ones squark, tend to pierce and jar synapses; and used on silks with just orange and yellow for company can be a bit intimidating really. More than that in fact..together they make up CYAN- last seen on overly-enthusiastic school baking sale posters.
So you must applaud Rodarte‘s Mulleavy girls for bombing into this section of the colour wheel; flitting between detailed dresses and streamlined tunic/trouser combos (a New York S/S favourite), apparently imagining what Sleeping Beauty’s Aurora would do if she had to actually get up, multi-task a closet wardrobe, and had an aching penchant for Van Gogh works. You know, all the references you can really get on board with!
Favourite NYFW shows: No2, Proenza Schouler
Written by Adele Booth

Proenza Schouler‘s Spring/Summer offering could have been an average affair; I mean technically probably very interesting for critics (who knows), but for the fans who love Proenza Schouler’s extravagant modernism, we almost missed out this time. But then Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez- one of them at least- added bits of a chintzy Seventies Formica kitchen to their utility dresses and short suits, and all was well with the world again.
#NYFW Elie Tahari Spring 2012

For Spring 2012, designer Elie Tahari was inspired by ancient Egypt and the hourglass figure of the early 1900s. As such he created a wardrobe fit for the modern day Cleopatra. Sleek silhouettes dominated with wrap dresses, polished button-ups, long leather skirts, and trousers that tied around the bottom of the foot. Sandy desert hues shone through with rust and yellow serving as a tribute to the sun god Ra. Gold jewelry adorned the necks, wrists, and waists of all the models, and ornate details such as snakeskin prints and metallic gladiator sandals finished the regal look.

Favourite NYFW shows: No. 1, Preen
Written by Adele Booth

Oh Preen! This was unforeseeable from where I was sitting (at a computer!) Sure there was digital stuff and plenty of cubes last time too, and here we stand again with all the pencil skirts an’all…but still! If Oliver Warbucks (the millionaire who adopts red-headed orphan Annie, memba?) had that sprightly secretary of his around now, Grace, this is what she’d be wearing! For sure! But she’d be working in PR instead- day to night is covered very well here.

In this sense Preen Spring/Summer 2012 is a bit sweety-kitsch like Luella, and tailored-up just nicely like Jonathan Saunders…so ultimately, you belong in London guys. Just face it!
#NYFW Oscar de la Renta Spring 2012

Marigold, emerald, and tomato came out in succession at Oscar de la Renta’s Spring 2012 collection. With cropped top and taffeta ball skirt combos, this collection combined a sense of old world elegance with a modern, youthful aesthetic.
Elegant and opulent, there were moments of Elizabethan form, flower child style, and his signature uptown refinement. De la Renta of course delivered beautiful confections that classy women of all ages will definitely covet!
Before the NYFW Diesel Black Gold

The atmosphere was humming and the Diesel Black Gold show was running late and people were getting anxious. You could people murmuring about the delay. While we were waiting I decided to dash around and snap some pictures of the rich fabulous and famous that were attending the show. Editors Anna Dello Russo and Nina Garcia were in attendance. So was a thin looking Gerard Butler.

I wore a gorgeous Alexander Wang printed silk-chiffon wrap dress.
LA’s Cool Kids (& Coppolas) Crash NYFW
Gia Coppola, Melissa Coker & Bella Zarember. Photo: Billy Farrell Agency
Fashion Week got a touch of cool LA girl style last night at Mister H at Mondrian SoHo. Guests watched “What’s Up,” a short film by Gia Coppola that includes clothes from Wren and jewels from Fallon. Tennessee Thomas DJ’ed, while Miranda July and Sofia Coppola popped up to support their friends (and relatives!). “The way Gia can romanticize girl characters, it’s a really natural fit,” said Wren’s Melissa Coker. “I love how it’s this dynamic portrayal of a day in California, and the quality of light.”
Bella Zarember, the star, spends a languid day at home in LA. trying on clothes and playing with jewelry against a backdrop of class schedules and The Strokes stickers before heading outside for a walk. She forgets to put on shoes (or doesn’t care?), but it doesn’t stop her from stomping on a hermit crab on the sidewalk. “We shot during the Carmaggdon weekend, when the 405 was closed, so I tried to incorporate the idea of not being able to go out and being trapped inside. I remember in high school, not being able to drive, and imagined what you do at that age,” explained Coppola. “You can’t drive, you look on Facebook…There was this cute kid, Cortez, who was going to be the annoying younger brother, but it got too long,” she said.
