Marc Jacobs the designer and brand

A native of New York City, Marc Jacobs was born on April 9, 1963, and attended and graduated from Teaneck High School, while also graduating from the New York High School of Art and Design.

He continued his education at New York City’s Parsons where he won the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award in 1984 — the same year he was awarded the Chester Weinberg Gold Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year AwarHe designed and sold his first line of hand-knit sweaters while still at Parsons; he also designed his first collection for Reuben Thomas, Inc., while a student. It was in 1986 that Jacobs designed his first collection and namesake label. Following his studies, Jacobs began to design at Perry Ellis, in 1988, for whom he designed an infamous “grunge” collection, which lead to his dismissal in 1993. Ironically, in 1987, Jacobs had been awarded The Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent.

The youngest designer to have received this honor, Jacobs and his business partner, Robert Duffy, launched the Marc Jacobs signature line of womenswear in 194. In 1997, Jacobs was appointed Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, which he remains today, despite having dared to play with the Louis Vuitton monogram! Here, he created the company’s first ready-to-wear line. Also in 1997, Marc Jacobs took home yet another CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year Award, which sparked his launch of the lower-priced diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs in 1998. Since then, the awards keep coming and the brand keeps growing.
The Marc Jacobs brand now incldues clothing (womenswear, menswear and children’s), bags, shoes, eyewear, watches, home accessories and fragrances.

Stylist Annabel Tollman Shares Her Best Secrets for Vintage Shopping on eBay

Annabel tollman celebrity fashion stylist eBay recently launched their new Fashion Voice feature with a fun video, “What’s Your Vintage Era?” starring celeb stylist Annabel Tollman discussing how to select vintage dresses & looks to suit your figure.

Here are her top 5 tips for shopping for vintage on eBay like a pro:

1. MEASUREMENTS! Don’t rely on the seller to guesstimate sizes. “Ask for measurements,” advises Annabel. “Compare the measurements to a piece that you already own to make sure it fits well.”

2. KNIT KNOW-HOW “If you are looking to buy vintage knits (I personally love Alaia) be sure to ask the seller if the piece has been stored flat – knit pieces tend to stretch when hung up for many years.”

3. SEARCH SAVVY “Be sure to expand your search when looking for items. For instance, if you love vintage rock t-shirts, search by band but also specify details like “original”, “faded” or “thin” to make sure it’s truly authentic.”

4. MORE SEARCH SECRETS “Another trick when searching is to include pop-culture references eg. “Mad Men” or “Great Gatsby” or even style icons like “Bardot” or Lady Gaga” which will increase your selection.”

5. LABEL LUST? You might do better to select look and quality over what’s written on little garment tag. “You definitely get more party dress for your money if you buy un-labeled or non-designer vintage.”

Another great resource to keep on your shelf or tucked in your purse (fabulous for passing the time on the subway, train, or bus) is The Little Guide to Vintage Shopping. It will help you get your vintage chic on in no time.

Estée Lauder to Go High Fashion with Pure Color by Tom Pecheux

Estee lauder pure color craig mcdean tom pecheux

In his relatively new role as creative makeup director for the Estée Lauder brand, Pecheux wants to bring a "strong fashion edge to the brand. Makeup is such a fashion accessory — I’d like to highlight that part of the brand, and also bring a playful touch to the franchise," he recently explained to WWD. A colorful result of his strategy will be the new Pure Color cosmetics collection, debuting this fall. A sneak peek already showed up on the Fall 2010 Derek Lam runway: a limited edition fall color story for Pure Color dubbed Blue Dahlia. “Blue is iconic for fall and this collection offers many choices for women, because the colors are buildable and versatile…I’ve always thought that eye shadow brings women self-confidence and power.”

Lauder's proprietary "True Vision" technology helps the highly-saturated eyeshadow hues to layer on in both a suede'like matte finish and a luminous satin-sparkle.  The color pigments in the lip glosses are similarly wrapped in a "crystal-like" coating to make them saturated and super-shiny. “There are so many textures and colors here — you can do anything from a natural look to a much more dramatic look," notes Pecheux. “He’s done an amazing job
redefining modern color for Estée Lauder, adds Jane Hertzmark Hudis, global brand president of the Estée Lauder brand. “Having Tom Pecheux in this role is bringing us a new fashion edge and sense of style."

The new line of 48 shadows in four finishes, and 34 shades of gloss will start hitting department store counters in stages beginning in June 2010, along with the print and digital ad campaigns shot by Craig McDean. (source)

Macy’s Fashion Director Daily Style Challenge = $500 Gift Card Each Day!

Macys fashion director stylist

A recent online survey of Macy's customers revealed that almost half the women polled find it a challenge to put together fabulous outfits on a regular basis, in particular, how to incorporate the latest trends with stuff already in the closet. To spread the fashion love, they are launching their new Macy's Fashion Director, an online mix-and-match tool that allows you to select pieces – from the perfect skirt to the season's "must-have" accessory – and build a virtual outfit. “Macy’s Fashion Director gives our customers the unique opportunity to create their own fashion story,” explains Nicole Fischelis, Macy's group vice president/fashion director. “They are able to put together a look that expresses their vision of what they believe fashion is right now. It’s how I take a trend from the runway and interpret it to fit our
customer’s needs."

Macys spring 2010 trends

To celebrate, Macy's is kicking things off with the 30 Day Fashion Director Challenge: from March 8 through April 6, they will post a daily style challenge – from the fun & flirty (a blind date) to the classy & chic (a big work presentation) to the special occasion (a wedding rehearsal dinner) – for which they invite everyone to put together the perfect outfit. Participating virtual-stylists will begin with a blank virtual canvas and Macys silver shorts spring fashion trendsuggested pieces from Macy's Spring 2010 collections; from there, individual style sensibility is the guiding force in creating a unique look. Everyone is invited to vote on the results; whoever gets the most votes for their outfit wins that day's prize: a $500 Macy's Gift Card.

“We know that fashion is an ever-evolving sport and that putting together an outfit, whether for everyday or for a special occasion, can sometimes be a major challenge,” says Martine Reardon, executive vice president of marketing for Macy’s. “With Macy’s Fashion Director, we are providing our customers with a fun, interactive tool that allows them to learn about and experiment with the season’s trends, engaging them in a unique way with a special reward for putting it all together.”

For fun, Macy's even tasked its key style makers including Martha Stewart, Donald Trump, Clinton Kelly, and Rachel Roy with their own seemingly impossible fashion challenge. The results of the makeover tests are a series of mockumentary-style short films called “Fashion Interventions” hosted at Macy’s Fashion Director. These sassy how-to films capture the star advisors in irreverent scenarios conducting fashion interventions with some unlikely characters. How did these fashion mavens fare against the style-challenged?

Stay tuned for the big reveal over the next several weeks at Macys.com/FashionDirector.
