Fashion Tech Startup Boom: Why It’s Happening and How They Get Funded

Last year saw a significant influx of new fashion-focused tech startups. Former Mis-Teeq singer Alesha Dixon was poached from BBC’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ to be a judge alongside Simon Cowell in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.

Since I’ve by no means watched either show, let’s focus on the fashion.

The judge was spotted leaving the Lowry Hotel in Manchester on Sunday whilst heading to auctions.

She braved the rain to show off her gorgeous Peter Pilotto Resort 2012 dress.

The racer-front-and-back dress with a hyper-vivid print is hopefully the commence of a new fashion era for Alesha. Hopefully she can fill the void left by Cheryl Cole.

Alesha opted to straighten her curly locks and full her look with nude Louboutins.

Project Runway Alums Are Designing Looks for a YSL Museum Retrospective

The Denver Art Museum is hosting a new fashion exhibit referred to as “Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective.” Even though we mentioned this exhibition in our 2012 museum roundup, we just got some far more specifics about this distinct show.

The exhibition will be hosted at the museum from March 25 – July 8. The Denver Art Museum is the only venue in the US at which this show will be held, and it sounds pretty spectacular. As the name suggests, it is a retrospective of YSL’s career from his early days at Dior in the 1950s up by means of his final show in 2002. The show was curated by Florence Müller and overseen by Pierre Bergé, who was YSL’s a single-time romantic partner and life-long organization partner.

Now here’s exactly where it gets a littler strange. In what sounds a lot like 1 of the challenges on Project Runway, to fete the opening of the exhibition, eight PR alumni designed 5 looks every inspired by YSL for a runway show which will take place on March 30.

(I’m going with the former, because I completely forgot about Anya, too, and she was pretty memorable, and not only since she had a sex tape. ) They are: Rafael Cox, Danielle Everine, Cecilia Motwani, Becky Ross, Julie Tierney, and Fallene Wells.

It is undoubtedly a great opportunity for the former contestants, and getting Pierre Bergé as your Tim Gunn is an chance few designers get.

JANE BY DESIGN Style Challenge #7: Get the Look – Billy Nutter’s 80s Rad-Fab

Now that the fun new fashion-centric Jane by Design show premiered on ABC Family, whose look did you love? (If you missed it or don’t have a TV, you can watch it here.) Whose look would you steal and what are your top tips for snagging the look? For this, the final challenge, we were instructed to share our own tips on how to get someone’s look. I particularly like Billy Nutter, the bestie of the title character, Jane – and his rocker-boy 80s vibe.

The key ingredients in this look are a cool leather jacket, a tough bag, and eyecatching accessories like touches of leopard & Risky Business-style sunnies & happenin’ hair.

For my Billy-inspired ensemble, I started with this completely fab Rick Owens leather (any excuse for Rick Owens, really) and cute Michael Michael Kors skinny pant with an interesting tuxedo-stripe embellishment for visual texture & to keep all this black from feeling too heavy. A vintagey tie in leopard looks equally cute on fashionistas as it does fashionistos – and accessories by Alexander Wang proved picture-perfect. (They’re all available at NET-A-PORTER)

Just step into a pair of cute jodhpur boots like these snazzy ones from Burberry, spike up your tresses – try Living Proof Hold Firm Hairspray – et voila, it’s Billy-fabulous by design.
