FAA targets the younger demographic in particular and raises funds and awareness about HIV/AIDS with the limited edition collection which will be available starting April 26th in 300 H&ampM Divided departments as well as on-line at HM.com.

This year’s FAA collection puts global tribes in a 21st century context, with unique prints commissioned from international artists and illustrators to create pieces bursting with colour, pattern and authenticity. Look for African trims on blouses and bustiers, graphic black &amp white Maori prints on leggings and crop-tops and folkloric Inuit styles from Greenland on draped T-shirts. Other groovy touches consist of macrame, fringed &amp dip-dyed pieces, cropped harem trousers for guys, hats, footwear, jewelry &amp iPhone instances, festival ponchos, hammocks and even band-aids (plasters).

“I love this year’s Fashion Against AIDS collection,” notes H&ampM’s Head of Style, Ann-Sofie Johansson. “It brings together so several international types that send not only a effective fashion message, but also assist spread the word about HIV/AIDS awareness. It is wonderful that the collection contains the perform of artists and illustrators from numerous diverse countries, helping us to raise funds for these essential youth HIV/AIDS charities.” So far, H&ampM has raised about 45 million SEK from previous FAA projects, and 25% of all sales this year will go directly to a range of international youth HIV/AIDS awareness projects including:

As we approach the middle of the madness that is awards season, we take a look at what we think makes up the A – Z of red carpet style at these big star-studded events (yes, we even found a Q and an X)…

A is for Academy Awards

The Academy Awards is undoubtedtly the biggest awards show on the red carpet calendar and thus the most glamorous. Film stars from across the globe flock to Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre to celebrate the year’s best performances, dressed in their very best couture. Designers clamour to dress nominees and presenters, as the publicity is worth millions.

B is for Brit Awards

The UK’s slightly more laid-back, casual alternative to the Grammy Awards, the Brits celebrate the best of the British music scene, and it’s always a star-studded event. The fashion choices are edgier than at most shows, with a lot of UK stars turning to British designers. There’s an ‘anything goes’ feel that means you’ll see couture next to high street, and glam gowns next to ripped denim. Cheryl Cole added some glamour to the 2011 awards in a wet-look sequinned dress by Stella McCartney (above).

C is for Couture

Oh, to be a celeb, able to pick clothes straight off the couture catwalk and wear them days later to awards shows! Couture may be the stuff of dreams to most of us, but if you have the star status, you can take your pick of some of the world’s most intricate, beautiful and expensive dresses for awards season. Emma Watson was one of the lucky ones last year, wearing romantic Valentino Couture to the BAFTAs.

D is for Dress Disaster

Occasionally, a celeb picks an outfit for an award show that’s so incredibly off the mark you wonder if they’ve done it deliberately. Such was the case in 2006, when Uma Thurman – famously one of the most reliably glamorous Oscar attendees – rocked up in a strange gilded pirate costume by Christian Lacroix. It put her straight to the top of all the worst-dressed lists and earned her a place in Oscar fashion history for all the wrong reasons.

E is for Edith Head

Edith Head is the celebrated costume designer who created memorable looks for the likes of Barbara Stanwyck, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly. She was nominated for 35 Academy Awards and won 8. In the early years of the Oscars before couture houses got involved, costume designers would dress stars for the ceremony. It was an Edith Head dress that Audrey Hepburn wore to collect her Oscar for Roman Holiday.

F is for Foreign Films

Over recent years, there have been many foreign films that have crossed the language barrier to become instant classics the world over – and they’re always a hit during awards season. These films have bought us some of the best-dressed red carpet stars; think Audrey Tautou, Marion Cotillard, Noomi Rapace and Ziyi Zhang. This year’s one to watch is Berenice Bejo, the beautiful star of The Artist, seen above at the Golden Globes wearing Gucci Premiere. After sitting front row at the recent Elie Saab show, will she pick one of his designs for the Oscars?

G is for Golden Globes

The first big date on the awards show calendar, the Golden Globes is always a good indicator of what’s to come, and a bit of a trial run for the Oscars. Taking place in January, it’s the first chance for stars to get their gladrags on. With awards for both the big and small screen, the stars of film and television come together to find out who get the seal of approval from the Hollywood Foreign Press.

H is for Hollywood Hair

With such beautiful gowns, celebs need showstopping hair to match, and the looks created by hollywood hair teams for award shows run the gauntlet from glamorous retro waves (seen above on January Jones) to more trend-led, edgy styles like Dianna Agron‘s fluffy fishtail updo. The toughest job comes if the host is female – last year the Frederik Fekkai team gave Anne Hathaway a whopping 8 hairstyles, while 2012 People’s Choice Awards host Kaley Cuoco sported 6 different do’s during her hosting duties.

I is for Independent Films

The definition of an Independent film is one that’s not produced by one of the ‘big six’ studios (20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, Paramount, Columbia, Universal and Walt Disney Studios). Thus come awards season, a big crop of Indie films find themselves up for awards. Perhaps most noticeable are the foreigns films, including those to come out of the UK, like last year’s big winner The King’s Speech. This year, indie films received 60 nominations in the Academy Awards, including Michelle Williams‘ (above) nod for My Week With Marilyn.

J is for Jewels

Whether they’re classic diamonds from Harry Winston or Chopard, or more unusual gems like Keira Knightley‘s vintage Bulgari bling, no awards season is complete without some very precious jewellery. But wearing jewels worth hundreds of thousands of dollars means the red carpet is littered not only with stars, but with jewellery bodyguards too. And jewels do disappear – at the Golden Globes in 2011, Christina Hendricks lost a $ 850,000 Chopard bracelet on the red carpet. Luckily it was found before the end of the night, and Hendricks stashed it in her cleavage so it wouldn’t go walkies again!

K is for Keveza

Romona Keveza to be exact, the bridal designer who’s quickly becoming the go-to girl for romantic, feminine red carpet gowns. She’s the woman responsible for Christina Hendricks‘ red corsage dress at the 2011 Golden Globes, Angelina Jolie‘s navy one-shouldered number at The Land of Blood and Honey premiere, and Kaley Cuoco‘s tiffany blue princess dress at the 2012 SAG Awards. She’s also dressed Glee‘s Heather Morris (above), Anna Kendrick and Jennifer Love Hewitt to name but a few. Look out for this designer, you’ll be seeing a lot more of her in the future.

L is for Lebanon

The surprise country that’s leading the way when it comes to fabulous new red carpet designers. It may not be a fashion capital when it comes to ready to wear, but for gowns, Lebanon is the place to go. First there was Elie Saab, most famous for dressing winner Halle Berry in 2002, then Zuhair Murad, whose gowns have been worn by everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Miley Cyrus (above) and Reem Acra (who Madonna chose for the 2012 Golden Globes). Finally, there’s Basil Soda, who has dressed Katy Perry, Kelly Rowland, Christina Applegate and Emily Blunt for high profile red carpet events.

M is for Marchesa

Marchesa is the red carpet favourite of everyone from Lea Michele to Sandra Bullock. Designer Georgina Chapman is married to movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, so the film & fashion links are strong. The Marchesa trademark is detail, with strong embellishment, dreamy fabrics and fairytale touches – see Halle Berry (above) at the 2011 Oscars.

N is for Nominees

Also known as ‘the ones who get the best dresses’, award nominees can expect all kinds of perks in the run-up to big awards shows. Rumour has it that Gwyneth Paltrow was sent hundreds of gowns to consider for the Oscars when she was nominated for Shakespeare in Love, which makes it all the more surprising that she opted for a powder pink Ralph Lauren dress that didn’t fit properly at the bust (apparently, some padding was taken out last minute). This year, no doubt fashionista nominees like Jessica Chastain (above in Givenchy at the Golden Globes) and Michelle Williams are receiving the same treatment right now.

O is for Oscar

…both the famous golden statuette handed out to Academy Award winners, and Mr De La Renta, the designer famous for dressing the likes of Cameron Diaz (above) and Jennifer Garner for the big night.

P is for Presenters

And a lovely excuse to get an extra HD close-up of the best dresses! Presenters at smaller Award shows tend to be those with something to promote (‘stars of the new movie…’) but at the Academy Awards they are simply those with the most A’ list appeal. Already confirmed for the 2012 Oscars are Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez (above in Marchesa) and the Bridesmaids cast, with plenty more names to come in the next week or so.

Q is for Quirky

It’s safe to say that Bjork made Oscar history when she arrived at the 2001 Academy Awards in a slightly bonkers Marjan Pejoski dress designed to look like a swan. It was ridiculed and revered in equal numbers – but it definitely made an impression. Years later, the dress came in at number 9 in a list of the most iconic red carpet dresses (based on a poll by Debenhams). Whether you loved it or hated it, the quirky design turned heads and made its wearer stand out in the crowd. And at the end of the day, as Bjork said after the event, “it’s just a dress.”

R is for Red carpet

Reports ‘live from the red carpet’ are now synonymous with award shows, but they don’t come without their problems. At the BAFTA awards in London in 2002, it was raining so heavily that the red carpet began to foam up, apparently from detergent residue left over from its last clean. Kate Winslet famously threw a tantrum about her ruined dress – but who can blame her? Custom Ben de Lisi is pretty hard to come by! You can see the amount of foam in the picture above – that carpet’s meant to be completely red!

S is for Screen Actors Guild Awards

The Award Show that allows the stars to pat each other on the back. This night is for actors, by actors, and celebrates top performances by members of the Screen Actors Guild. All this makes it the perfect excuse to get dressed up and show off to industry pals. Seen above is Emma Stone at the 2012 awards in a Alexander McQueen dress.

T is for two o’clock in the morning

This is the time most award shows start for those of us in the UK, so if you want to watch the red carpet live from Blighty, you have to be willing to pull an all-nighter. An Oscars hangover is par for the course regardless, so we suggest Oscars drinking games to keep things rolling. Or if all else fails…caffeine!

U is for Ungaro

When Cameron Diaz stepped out at the 2002 Academy Awards in a bold Ungaro floral dress teamed with turquoise jewellery and a bejewelled belt, it marked one of those rare Oscar fashion moments that will never be forgotten. The dress may be a bit marmite (you either love it or you hate it) but this was 2002, the pre-boho era, and Cameron’s easy breezy outfit was a precursor for everything that came soon after. It was a breath of fresh air on the stuffy, taffeta-heavy red carpet. The gown and the hippy-ish accessories reflected Camerons’ laid-back personality perfectly and this was the ultimate pairing of actress and dress.

V is for Vera Wang

The designer most known for wedding dresses also does an amazing line in red carpet gowns, and has dressed a clutch of A-listers for awards shows. Her most memorable Oscar dresses include Michelle Williams‘ buttercup yellow 30s style gown, Keira Knightley‘s killer burgundy taffeta dress and Sandra Bullock‘s ‘screw you’ red dress in 2011 (above).

W is for white

It’s the formalwear colour that keeps coming back – regardless of trends you can be guaranteed at least one female celebrity will opt for a white gown at each big awards event. Maybe it’s the challenge of wearing white without looking like a bride, or perhaps these perfect stars are proving that they can pull off even the most unforgiving colour? Whatever the reason, for many A listers, it’ll be all white on the night (*groan*).

X is for X-rated style

There’s always one, isn’t there? While award show red carpets tend to be fairly subdued affairs when it comes to flesh-flashing, at the post-show parties, anything goes! This goes some way to explaining why model Erin Wasson ended up leaving so little to the imagination at a Golden Globes party in 2012. If you’ve got it, flaunt it, right?

Y is for Yves Saint Laurent

Awards show regular Kate Winslet regularly turns to YSL designer Stefano Pilati for a bit of red carpet glamour. It was wearing Yves Saint Laurentdresses that she collected a Golden Globe and an Oscar for The Reader, and when she came back to present the following year she wore YSL yet again (above). Perhaps the designer is lucky for the oft-nominated actress?

Z is for Zac Posen

The young American designer is responsible for a thousand fishtails, including Reese Witherspoon‘s stunning red number at the 2012 Golden Globes (above). He’s also a favourite with models at post-awards parties; fans include Elle Macpherson, Coco Rocha and Crystal Renn.

5 Details About Edith Bouvier Beale

Edith Bouvier Beale was born November 17, 1917 in New York City. Given that Edith shared a name with her mother, they were known as “Little Edie” and “Big Edie,” respectively.

Edie came from an extremely privileged background (Jackie O. was her first cousin!) and her family members lived in a large mansion in the Hamptons known as “Grey Gardens.” In her youth, Edie was a model, socialite and “it” girl, but her ultimate aspiration was to turn out to be a popular dancer. However, her father left the household in the 1930s, taking most of his wealth with him.

By 1952, Edie was allegedly on the verge of a large break with her dancing when she abruptly decided to move back house with her mother. The women were living off a small monthly stipend and without the cash to pay for the upkeep of the mansion, Grey Gardens was beginning to fall into disrepair.

The Edies lived in relative isolation till 1971, when the health department attempted to evict the females and condemn the property because it violated “every identified building regulation” such as housing more than 300 stray cats. Jackie O. decided to aid out and paid $ 32,000 to clean the house. Immediately after this ordeal, Edie and her mother were approached by filmmakers who sooner or later produced a documentary about their lives known as Grey Gardens. The documentary was a single of the first of its sort and was later adapted into a full-length musical. In 2009, HBO released Grey Gardens biopic staring Drew Barrymore as Tiny Edie.

After her mother’s death in 1977, Little Edie attempted start a cabaret dancing career at the age of 60. Two years later, she sold Grey Gardens and moved around a bit before settling in Florida, exactly where she lived till passing away in 2002.

Edie’s Style 101

Bohemian. Edie was really the revolutionary fashionista in the course of her time. She mixed mix textures and patterns, wore skirts as caplets and even created her personal clothes out of old tablecloths and curtains. Her sense of style was very eccentric and quirky, but somehow she usually made everything she wore look fabulous.

Scarves. Later in life, Edie suffered from alopecia, which caused her hair to fall out. As a result, she began donning chic head scarves, which she owned in every color and pattern imaginable. Edie wore her scarves wrapped and styled in a multitude of diverse methods, definitely producing them her signature accessory.

Leggy Lady. Edie’s dancing background caused her to have a fairly great set of legs, which she loved to show off in makeshift mini-skirts. However, when wearing shorter ensembles, she often kept her best half covered in order to maintain her look balanced. Mimic her aesthetic by wearing shorts or skirts with extended-sleeved tops or coats — just keep in mind to add some tights if it’s cold out!

Written by Emily – Vassar College

As an Art History major, whenever I travel, I spend most of my time visiting museums.

Although I love seeing the paintings and sculptures that I have studied in class, some of my favorite museums display another kind of art – clothes. From couture outfits straight off the runway to Victorian lace gowns, studying these pieces can tell me just as much about a culture and time period as a painting. And imagining where the dresses have been – swirling on the dance floor at a ball at Versailles, or strolling down the streets of 19th century London – is my favorite daydream.

Below are my seven all-time favorite fashion museums. They are museums I have visited that remind me what fashion truly is – a mix of influences from art, culture and society, and something that can transform a woman into anything that she wants to be.

1. The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

Since my house is only a short walk from the Met, it leads to an unhealthy obsession with the Costume Institute exhibits. I do not want to admit how many times I visited my personal favorites, such as the Paul Poiret and American Woman exhibits.

The Costume Institute, an enormous collection of historic costumes owned by the Met, puts on a different themed exhibit each summer. This summer’s exhibit is on Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada, comparing and contrasting their work. Once confined to a dark basement gallery with the garments displayed behind glass, over the past few years the exhibits have gotten bigger and better with imaginative scenery and elaborate decoration. The most famous fashion collection in America, this is a must see if you are in New York City during the summer.

2. Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris

Musée des Arts Décoratifs

Connected to the Louvre, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs puts on exhibits of French clothing – but think a lot of avant-garde, contemporary designers, like Hussein Chalayan, Maison Martin Margiela and Galliano. It also exhibits retrospectives of French Designers, and French fashion from different decades.

This is the must-see fashion museum in Paris if you want to get a glimpse at more modern Parisian couture and design. The museum also has an incredible fine jewelry collection. And make sure to check out the incredible book shop in the library, with tons of amazing fashion books!

3. Musée Galliera, Paris

Housed in an enormous mansion near Avenue Montagine, the Musée Galliera holds the largest costume collection in Paris. It has two exhibits per year, each showcasing a different selection of clothing from its vast collection.

Last time I was there, they had a show focused on the 1920s and the amount of dresses, suits and accessories that were displayed was incredible. Its older dresses, spanning back to the 18th century, are gorgeous examples of Rococo fashion and its collection is in excellent shape.

4. The Costume Gallery, Pitti Palace, Florence

The Costume Gallery

My Art History teacher recommended I visit these galleries when I was in Florence and I am glad that she did, otherwise I would never have found them. Located in the enormous Pitti Palace, which is basically the Versailles of Florence, the costume collection is hidden amongst priceless works of art and up endless flights of stairs, but the trek to get there is worth it.

The collection is displayed in a suite of meticulously decorated 19th century rooms, and in each lavishly appointed room, there are glass cases of dresses by Italian designers, some from the 18th century and some from ten years ago. The museum also exhibits three of the few 16th century outfits left in the world. Most amazingly, the outfits belonged to Cosimo Medici and his wife Eleonora, who ruled Florence in the 16th century. And get this – the clothes displayed are their burial garments that were taken off of their bodies. Kind of gross (and the clothes are not in good shape, as expected) but also super cool.

5. The Museum at FIT, New York City

This museum is located at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and though small, it has a great collection of many important designer pieces from the last century – from Gianni Versace’s Marilyn Monroe-printed suit to Halston gowns. The museum also collaborates with great icons and other collections. Most recently they had an exhibition of clothing that Daphne Guiness lent from her closet.

6. The Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent, Paris

The Fondation Pierre Bergé – Yves Saint Laurent

This small gem of a museum is located in what used to be Saint Laurent’s atelier, and is now the company’s archives. The museum only contains a few rooms, filled of with rotating exhibits of Saint Laurent designs from different collections and periods. But, if you are in Paris on a college program, you can contact the foundation for a tour of the archives.

I got the chance to take the tour of the archives a few years ago, and it was absolutely breathtaking – imagine rows and rows of shelves and racks filled with every Saint Laurent collection. Also, the museum has a great gift shop- think YSL pens, pins and postcards, for only a few euros!

7. Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum, Your Computer

The fashion museum of the future! And finally, one that you can access without even leaving your desk. Launched this past December, the Valentino Garavani Virtual Museum houses Valentino’s digital archive.

On the downloaded application, there is a virtual museum containing many different rooms to explore, with dresses on mannequins in all of them. When you click on a dress, you can view celebrities wearing it, the original sketches for it, the dress on the runway, and other details. It is a ton of fun to play around with and a very interesting concept – best of all, you can check it out from the comfort of your room!

Your thoughts?

Now that you’ve seen my picks for must-see fashion museums, I want to hear from you: Have you visited any of these museums? Are you planning on visiting any of them? What are YOUR favorite fashion museums and exhibits that you’ve seen? Leave a comment and tell me!

ABC’s new hit Television show As soon as Upon a Time hooked me in from the extremely beginning! It’s a fairy tale told with a twist, and a show that you have to watch from the starting to grasp every single nuance. It is also a wonderful supply of fashion inspiration.

If you haven’t noticed it, it is essentially a story about Snow White. It begins when Snow White and Prince charming are about to get married and the Evil Queen curses them (and absolutely everyone else living in Snow White’s fairy tale) back to a modern day day town, exactly where the characters don’t bear in mind who they are or why they reside in a little town named Storybrook. Only the Evil Queen (who becomes the modern day day Mayor named Regina) knows who each character actually is.

Henry (Regina’s tiny boy) is given a quite essential story book by his teacher, Mary Margaret, and he begins to figure out this mystery with the assist of his biological mother, Emma. The Evil Queen’s inner workings start to unravel and items start to alter for great.

Confusing, I know, but when you start watching it you will not be in a position to stop! Trust me.

Characters

For this post on fashion inspired by the show, I focused on three major characters. Here is a tiny cheat sheet to bear in mind what the character’s modern day name is, and what their storybook character actually is.

Mary Margaret – Henry’s teacher – in fact is Snow White

Emma Swan – Henry’s biological mother – really is Snow White’s Daughter

Henry - Mayor Regina’s adopted son/Emma’s true son – really is the Evil Queen’s Father

Now that you are completely confused, or possibly you are following along… here’s the information you really came right here for - Heigh ho heigh ho… it is off to fashion we go!

Mary Margaret

Top rated Cardigan Skirt Shoes Necklace Bag

Mary Margaret (Snow White) is an endearing soul who loves to put on soft colors and lots of skirts with whimsical patterns.

For this outfit, I chose a lace best that can be layered with a navy blue cardigan with bow facts. Next, I chose a floral skirt and beige/pink flats. When accessorized with an apple necklace and a leather satchel, you will be ready to begin singing with the animals in the forest and hanging out with your preferred seven dwarf buddies. Really feel free of charge to add tights/leggings or more layers if you are wanting to wear this in cold weather!

Emma Swan

Shirt Jacket Jeans Scarf Shoes Ring Necklace Earrings

Emma Swan (Snow White’s Daughter) plays the savior in this show. She also becomes the Deputy for Storybrook. As such, her wardrobe is easy: She typically wears her trusty leather jacket, a white t-shirt/tank, and a nice pair of jeans. Do not be fooled by the easy pieces, though – her style is not boring! Accessories make all the distinction here: I utilised a green scarf, watch necklace, ring, and star earrings to spruce up this appear. Then, for your hair, just curl it all more than and tousle. You’ll have the perfect Emma Swan look!

Henry

Henry is Regina’s adopted son and Emma’s real son. (Confusing, I know.) He is quite trendy for a person so young, and I thought I would capture his youthful appear in a way that would be wearable for college women everywhere.

I chose a plaid button up, and a black peacoat for the best. Then, I paired that with some straight legged jeans and black boots. For the accessories, I chose to go with a chunky knit scarf as nicely as braided bracelets, a “Believe” ring, and a key necklace. All of these whimsical accessories add to the “Henry” appear and capture this motivated child’s style perfectly.

We all love a good model cover. Nonetheless, Vogue China’s March 2012 Cover is so poor, I’d rather see a celebrity cover rather of it any day! Besides, Vogue China doesn’t care significantly about becoming original – a person need to have heard that we’d love to see a model on the cover of Vogue. So they decided to double the pleasure (we do love Isabeli Fontana and Natasha Poly, but this photo is tasteless)! (can you please stop, Vogue China? Use your imagination, fashion is all about creativity, not repetition!)
