Although the brand may not be a household name in the UK, in the Netherlands a Supertrash fashion show is a massive occasion, an excuse for a huge party, and one of the highlights of Amsterdam Fashion Week.

So I was extremely excited to be invited to join Supertrash at the show final weekend.

Designer Olcay Gulsen is a bit of a celeb in her homeland, and her label specialises in glam daywear, party dresses, separates and some genuinely wonderful jackets. It is all wearable, reasonably priced stuff thats sold for around €50 – €200 per piece. But don’t let the high street priced fool you – the show was all about glamorous spectacle!

Amsterdam’s Passenger Terminal (usually used for cruise ship berthing) was transformed into a catwalk for the night, and the nautical theme was important when it came to the setting. Sitting along the front row were girls in white Supertrash tuxedos with sailor hats – a closer appear revealed that every hat held the name of the person for whom that seat was reserved I now have my ‘Gemma’ hat safely stashed at home for the next fancy dress party I attend!

Backstage, models were busy getting transformed into 1970s Studio 54 goddesses with lengthy wavy hair (courtesy of a table stacked with hair extensions)…

…and killer heels with mirrored platforms, produced exclusively for the show by Supertrash. Given the height of these babies, it really is a wonder nobody fell more than – we only got one slight stumble!

The collection was at its greatest when it was a louche, sexy take on the 70s, with lurex backless maxis, a Missoni-inspired chevron print and Bianca Jagger-esque tuxedos the primary attractions.

The knitwear was also a success, with some excellent intarsia midi dresses and slouchy grey knits. Jewel-toned leather skirts with zips, a touch of snakeskin and heavy wool winter separates (capes, coats, skirts) had been other highlights.

My favourite piece had to be the chevron maxi with v-back, which I feel perfectly represents what I learned about the brand on my trip to Amsterdam. Where Gulson succeeds is in her capability to quit before taking a look too far. The dress is bright, but the shape is simple, and it really is this restraint that works so well. With a name like Supertrash, I was expecting lots of gold hardwear, bling and embellishment, but actually, the label is far far more subtle than that, and this is no doubt the purpose it really is so productive.

The finale video beneath offers you a excellent appear at the collection as a entire. There was a bit of a construct-up, but I promise they begin moving at 00.29!

Supertrash is accessible in the UK on the internet, through ASOS, Designer Desirables and from numerous independent retailers. In Europe, there are retailers in key cities, such as a stunning new flagship on Amsterdam’s P.C. Hooftstraat. A London shop is coming to the west end very soon.

On a cool-kid block of the Lower East Side is a white shop that is so meticulously orderly, it might make your head spin. Envelope clutches rest upon a white piano. Minimal gold rings sit beside crystals on the countertops. Shoes are perfectly paired on the floor. Of course I’m talking about Assembly New York.

The kid of Greg Armas’ adore of fashion and art, Assembly New York is an aesthete’s wet dream. Not only is it a clothing shop, but it is also its personal label, launching womenswear at fashion week for fall 2012. With his calm demeanor and soft-spoken nature, Greg Armas is the thoughtful brains behind Assembly New York’s good results. I sat down with him to talk about his budding company and specifically how he makes it in fashion right now.

Fashionista: How did Assembly New York, the shop and the brand, come to exist?
Greg Armas: Initially it was a continuation of a shop I had in LA, known as Scout Los Angeles. October, three years ago, is when I began Assembly NY. It was initially two doors down, and then October of last year we moved into this location, and it actually grew into a men’s and women’s store. When Assembly opened it was pretty significantly for the guys, but then we began obtaining far more and a lot more females coming in and purchasing the mens stuff, so when we moved we decided to do both.

What inspired your move from LA to New York?
LA has a particular speed, which is excellent for living, but for function and breaking new ground and acquiring items carried out, I felt like I was running by way of molasses at times. At the time, it just seemed like all my path was to be right here. I guess I came here to make it huge, like everybody else. [laughs]

Did you have any earlier design or company encounter prior to?
No. I mean I owned the shop in LA, but I have no specific design knowledge. I do have an art background, I truly had galleries prior to I opened a fashion store. The design is actually new to me. That approach was like studying backwards, learning from the clothes. I’m fortunate enough to be in a position to surround myself with knowledgeable people and assemble a genuinely very good team to fill in all the gaps.

“Leave room in your life for the unperfected. You will have adequate time later to refine and to edit, but love lies in the raw. Preserve your imagination free of editing.”

These sage words were component of a passionate and guidance-filled keynote address that designers Isabel and Ruben Toledo gave to kick off the Fashion Group International Rising Star Awards on Thursday at Cipriani 42nd St. Creativity and spontaneity had been a timely theme, taking into consideration that several of the event’s attendees are busily preparing for their upcoming Fashion Week shows subsequent month.

That pre-NYFW power was palpable amongst the Rising Star nominees and the business luminaries in attendance, which includes Project Runway’s Nina Garcia, designer Catherine Malandrino, and GILT co-founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson.

Designer Wes Gordon, who tied with designer Misha Nonoo of Nonoo for the Women’s Rising Star RTW award, said, “It is such an honor to be right here. It’s a space full of people whom I admire so a lot and look up to. I’m only 25 and actually early in my career, so it is thrilling to get this nomination.” He also shared that his Fall 2012 Collection “will be a little darker. I was thinking what do you want to wear in New York in Fall? You do not want to wear pink. You want something that has a tiny narrative to it, a tiny bite. We’re playing with peplums, longer hems, trains and cutaways. Oxblood is one particular of our major colors, and I’m obsessed with it.”

“I feel FGI is an unbelievable institution, and they have deep roots inside the fashion business,” Nonoo mentioned. “I’m honored and delighted to be a portion of right now.”

Besides Gordon and Nonoo, the large winners of the day included:

-Blythe Harris of on-line/direct sales jewelry retail powerhouse Stella and Dot, who took
home the Accessories Rising Star. She told the crowd that she was “proud to be portion of a
business that assists females.” Project Runway All-Star Rami Kashou, who has designed a
forthcoming bridal collab with Bebe retailers, presented the award to her.

-Indie fragrance brand D.S. and Durga, who won the Beauty/Fragrance Entrepreneur
award, given to them by fellow beauty businesswoman Maureen Kelly of Tarte.

-Wendy Brandes, winner of the Fine Jewelry prize, who thanked fellow Rising Star
nominee Stacy Lomman for the futuristic, hip-detailed sheath dress she wore to the
awards.

-Menswear designer Simon Spurr, in an amazing grey skinny suit, was awarded the
Menswear Rising Star by Thom Browne, who himself wore a signature cropped leg suit
of his personal. Spurr charmingly thanked his wife, whom he said was a pediatrician busy
saving lives at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Haute Couture Fashion Week continutes to amaze us with collections that remind us exactly why we adore fashion in the very first location. The Valentino show today was no exception a dreamy show full of gorgeous concoctions in light fabrics and soft colours, with out even a hint of the trademark Valentino red. For style team Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri, this was yet one more opportunity to prove they are the appropriate individuals for the job.

Opulent and rich, but still light and romantic, the show went from the salon – with rich embroidery and embellishment, chic high necklines and lovely layers of high-priced fabric – to the prairie, with puffy sleeves, floaty florals and even a bit of smocking.

When it was smart, it was super-wise with lengthy coats fastened with fabric covered buttons and ribbons, or chic suits with ornate lace insets. When it was rural, it was via voluminous swathes of fabric, nation florals and pretty accents about the bust, waist and cuffs.

Following the trend started by some of the shows throughout S/S12, models were fresh faced as they produced their way down the catwalk – skin was kept minimal with a touch of dewy foundation and a light rosie-pink blush to accentuate their cheekbones. Eyes had been the focal point, and even they had been kept pretty minimal: lids had been coated with a glowing white shadow and given a slick of black eyeliner on the top rated lashline, all set off with subtle but fluttery false lashes.

The hair was given a deep parting, curled, and then pinned into a faux bob to fit in with the ’50s style of the clothes and make up. Lovely, but extremely tame for couture week – hopefully things will get a bit much more thrilling!

As you know, we’ve been snapping away all week at Milan’s menswear shows and to be really frank, we couldn’t give two hoots about what the boys are wearing to the shows – we’re ALL about what the girls have packed. But interestingly adequate, the ladies in attendance do tend to steal from the guys’ wardrobes and take a bit of a sharp sartorial twist for these fashion week looks. Well, it’d be challenging to not be inspired by all of the fabulous suiting on those catwalks and with the Pre-Fall collection nevertheless fresh in a lot of a fashion eds’ thoughts – those baggy mannish suits from Celine et al. are a huge trend on the horizon – it’d be tough to ignore the boy-meets-girl vital of a good suit any longer…

Two ladies in particular caught our eye this time. Both editrix Anna Dello Russo (who we all know is as fond of a excellent trouser suit as she is a totally OTT dress) and Katia Grassi (who functions for Jil Sander’s Navy line) tried out the trouser suit and each succeeded. So why did they get it so proper? Nicely, they kept things straightforward, homochromatic (that is one colour, peeps), with practically zero accessorising and nicely, a totally cool attitude. Oh and heels assist for those of us who do not want to appear too masculine. We’ve picked some pieces to assist you on the way to finding this appear on track – but you’ll have to bring that swagger oneself, ladies…

The press has nowadays picked up on a story that is so duh-inducing it is barely worth mentioning. The news? You require to be a sample size 2 (UK 4-6) to get the greatest clothes during awards season.

Unless you happen to be an A list nominee or presenter with the cachet to request a custom gown, the ideal stuff comes straight off the catwalks – either couture fashion week (see Mila Kunis above in Elie Saab couture) or February’s fashion weeks, and is created to fit the ever-decreasing bodies of best models. Thus, if you want to be wearing Chanel to the Oscars, you really need to have the body of Freja or Kasia.

But isn’t this all stuff we currently know? Several celebs who do not fit the model-sized mould have been quite open about the difficulty they have in dressing for huge events when sample sizes do not fit. Design homes just do not want to dress anyone who demands ‘special attention’ unless they’re guaranteed loads of publicity. Unless you happen to be a guaranteed nominee (eg. Gabourey Sidibe, who wore custom Marchesa to the Oscars when she was nominated for Precious) you need to have to appear additional afield.

Thus the identical names crop up all the time when it comes to curvier celebs – David Meister and Tadashi Shoji pretty a lot have the market place wrapped up (see an early red carper appearance from Christina Hendricks, above).

it’s a great factor they do a fantastic job.

Sam Shipley and Jeff Halmos have been a quiet force in fashion for the past several years and have gradually been adding new non-clothing products and projects to their repertoire, such as hand-illustrated re-drawings of album covers, dog collars, a fragrance, and even their own book.

After a quick chat with one of the evening’s DJs, Alexa Chung–she and Aaron Stern once planned an Occupy Wall Street party together–we caught up with Sam, who filled us in on he and Jeff’s newest project and how they’ve managed to break the mold when it comes to being fashion designers.

Fashionista: How did you end up collaborating with Aaron Stern?
Sam Shipley: We were friends with Aaron and we were flipping through his blogs and he’s a photographer and he has a lot of friends who are in bands and we noticed he had shot–maybe out of boredom or out of waiting for something to happen–some scenic, non-band related photography and that sort of captivated Jeff and I because everybodys been an audience member and we thought that was a really cool concept to give focus on. No audience, no band; no band, no audience. So, I asked Aaron if he had more photographs and he had like a stockpile of photography,so we sort of curated a thing and that’s how it happened.

What about Aaron’s photography made you want it to be a part of your publishing company?
Jeff and I have a publishing division of our brand. We’ve made like art books; this the first book we’ve done with content we didn’t generate. It’s the first book that we collaborated on…I think Jeff and I are really focused on breaking the barriers between designer and customer and really trying to focus on not doing marketing and fashion the traditional way because we didn’t enter fashion design in the traditonal way and we consider oursevles…we’re customers too. We go and shop in shops as well so that’s how we like to think about our clothing collection and we figured that when we do books we want to share a similar sort of thought and I think that this book relates to that.

You guys do a lot more than just design clothes. Why is that important to you and your brand?
Well, the label on our clothing says “a collection of clothing and things.” That was very much intended from the beginning. We never check ourselves if we think we have a good idea–whether that be designing furniture or publishing a book. But I think that what really happened with us was we just wanted to…we just think differently and we dont feel like anyone has to conform to a specific regimen or do something a specific way because someone says you have to do it that way. And I think that doing these kind of products…I mean this is our inspiration, it’s not some movie. We gather feedback and process things a little bit differently and we’ve allowed ourselves the freedom to do that.

You guys didn’t show during fashion week last season. Will you this season? Or ever?
If we show during fashion week it’s going to be because we want to. Because we have a great idea that works for fashion week. Until that happens, we’re not necessarily that interested in fashion week. We’d rather go straight to the people that buy our clothes. Our clothing is meant to be worn…it doesn’t transform people. Something we like to convey with our brand [is that] if you wanted to make a book, you can make a book and direct a film. If you think you can do it, there’s not thing really stopping you.
