Project Runway‘s All Star cast lost the very first of its menfolk last night. Sadly, it was the fantastic Anthony Williams who took the fall. We spoke with the delightfully upbeat designer this afternoon about his experiences on the show, sneaking out of the contestants’ home for mussels at Cafeteria, and which of the new judges looks like Casper the Friendly Ghost.

You seemed quite prepared for poor news on the runway final night. Were you expecting to be auf’ed?

Yes. Not necessarily [prior to the runway show], but as soon as I saw all the girls leave the runway, I was like, “Mmm, that is a little too tv for me.” It was quite apparent. Right after that many girls went residence in a row, we knew the next person was gonna be a guy.

Did that increase the pressure?

No, the reality is, whatever’s going to take place is going to happen. I thought in the finish, the judges’ choice was fair according to what they mentioned. You just get over it.

Did you feel their assessment of your look’s found fabric/new fabric percentage breakdown was fair?

A single thing I’ve mentioned is that the whole challenge was inconsistent. At the beginning of the challenge, we had been told to develop a appear, fifty percent of which had to be from items you got from an individual on the street. Then, on the runway, it turned into “fifty percent of your fabric.” When [the producers] delivered the guidelines, it wasn’t all on camera. I’m not saying that the producers did something wrong, but there was a lot of area for miscommunication. That is when I started becoming a tiny flustered, due to the fact I was like, “Wait a minute, my design was going in a single path, now it is going in this direction.” It’s just, like, “ugh.” Where’s a cocktail when you require it?

While clothes hunting in Union Square, it seemed like a lot of the designers identified 1 individual for their muse and stopped there, but you collected garments from lots of people —mainly cute guys. Did that become a issue, getting too a lot fabric to work with?

The reality is, the producers encouraged us to get [clothes] from a lot of men and women. It was to see if you could get somebody to get naked. But you can’t rationalize irrational decisions — and, much more importantly, this isn’t my game. It was never ever in my cards to win Project Runway All-Stars. I’m not saying that to sound like a loser. I’m saying that what I went on the show for, I was in a position to do. I wanted to make confident I could manage my own on tv, I wanted to see growth in my operate, I wanted to make sure I didn’t sacrifice my character. And I will admit, when I’d been eliminated, I had the summer of my life in New York City. I was sneaking out and going every-damn-exactly where. I was going to Cafeteria every night. The guy who worked the door used to work at Mood. We didn’t have to wait on a table, he just got us in. I was consuming mussels and macaroni and cheese and acquiring drunk every single night.

So you are not at present based in New York?

No, I reside in Atlanta. But I’m preparing a move, and this move will most likely be the equivalent of Madonna dropping an album: I’m moving to L.A. It is gonna be a massive deal.

Because you can’t get struck by lightning if you don’t stand in the rain. I enjoy fashion style, but I’m developed for television. I was made for it. I think I bring some thing very refreshing, something very special and natural and natural to the knowledge, and I want to continue to pursue that. I get so a lot of provides and so numerous producers pitching shows and items of that nature, but they all think that I reside in L.A. And guess what? They’re not gonna come to Atlanta to find the subsequent great talent. I gotta go to L.A. and say, “Hello! I’m the next wonderful talent.”

Let’s talk about showcasing that talent of yours. Did you have reservations about carrying out All-Stars?

Most certainly. But after careful consideration I believed it was an honest competition, and I just moved past it and began having fun.

Was there any person you expected to see in the lineup who wasn’t there?

I believed Nick Verreos was coming back, but I believe when you get to a place exactly where he is in his profession, it may possibly not have been a good look for him. But I would have been glad to meet him, due to the fact I’m one of his fans. I didn’t know who was gonna be on the show, but they sent an inexperienced wrangler to get me from my friend’s residence in New York City and [I could see] he had the list of absolutely everyone he was gonna choose up from the airport. And, you know, folks assume I’m just funny, but they do not know that I’m very clever. Honey, I knew everyone on the damn show by the time we produced it to the second cease light in the cab ride to the studio. [laughs] I wasn’t expecting Mila. And I can honestly say I don’t know who I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting her to be on the show. At all. In any capacity.

I’m not gonna attack her style aesthetic, but watching her last night and the way she and Michael Costello type of partnered together to speak behind someone’s back…that’s a planet I don’t reside in. I don’t go over anything that is not my business, but I can tell that’s a portion of who she is naturally. I feel it comes across on tv that she’s extremely smug, she’s a backbiter. She’s almost certainly a superb woman, but I think given this opportunity she could have worked tougher to project a sweeter part of who she is. But I guess if there’s no sweet part, then that’s that.

But did you get along with all the designers, for the most component?

I did. Rami, Kara, and myself, we had been like the Kardashians. Let me give you the thought process behind that: not because we wanted to be the Kardashians, but we felt that if we just added the last name Kardashian, we could be any damn factor we wanted to be. Otherwise, I’ll tell you this, if you wanted to figure out, not necessarily the hierarchy, but who was friends with who, look at the gelato challenge. When it was time to choose who went next to choose their gelato, I’m telling you, the writing was on the wall, and it was ugly.

So you will be rooting for Rami and Kara then?

I’ll be rooting for Rami, Kara, and Austin. I assume that they are people who came with completely no agenda but to win. I think they are wholesome competitors you do not appear them ripping folks apart. I most absolutely assume that all of them deserve to win.

If Project Runway provided you a third opportunity for the win, would you go back?

Confident, I would go back. It’s too easy to get caught up in your ego over becoming booted off the show – how dare I be upset simply because I got eliminated? No one is immune from the process. It was me this week, but it was someone else final week and it’ll be somebody else this upcoming Thursday. So how dare I feel that a person owes me something, or that I was accomplished incorrect simply because it didn’t function out in my favor? I plan on going shopping in about an hour, and I guarantee you there will not be a size 36 in the pants I’m seeking for. The difficulty of final night will have absolutely nothing to do with the difficulty of right now.

Would you want a entire new set of judges again, or to preserve the panel as is now — or as it was?

Well, I didn’t know who Angela Lindvall was when we began, and I nonetheless have no idea about her character to be perfectly honest I just know they need to get her some shoes she can walk in. I was a small disappointed in…what’s his name? Isaac Mizrahi. I was truly upset with a comment he created final evening — he described me as lazy, when clearly for the final 24 hours we’d worked like dogs on the challenge, only for [him] to sit [his] ass in the chair and critique what we’ve accomplished? No, sweetie. Appear in the mirror. You are the instance of lazy, not me. All you have to do is let somebody throw some Casper the White Ghost makeup on your face and sit in that stool and be entertained by what we present and what we say. You can say what I made was awful, but to say that I was lazy, that indicates you’re saying a thing about my character. And I didn’t like that.

For the 1st time this season, the judges did seem to get a small snarky last night.

Well, they’re never ever gonna edit the judges to look other than superb and remarkable. They do not send makeup artists to do our makeup, but they get a whole damn beauty team. I’m like, “No! We worked like dogs! Send a person over to put some powder on me!” I’m personally quite grateful for the L’Oreal Paris Makeup Room. I went in there and did my own makeup. Make sure you put that in!

I wasn’t all that confident about Helena Christensen for Reebok – till I saw the photographs. I am sold. Christensen still stuns at 43 in a cutaway 1-piece that is somehow sexier than most bikinis and some black sneakers. This campaign does a lot far more for creating sporty look high fashion than many of the designers who have tried to implement athletic looks on their runways. Just sayin’.

The model also participated in Reebok’s Satisfaction Campaign, which sought to survey European females for what most satisfies them.

“I travel a lot with my perform, so spending time with my family and pals is critical to me,” Christensen mentioned. She also mentioned reading in bed gives her the ultimate satisfaction. Whatever you say, Helena, but that body appears wasted on a great book.

When we initial heard that Fern Mallis, who ran New York Fashion Week at IMG for practically a decade, was launching a jewelry line on QVC, our initial reaction, we need to admit, was: genuinely? Mallis is a fixture in the New York fashion scene, having gone on to host a series of talks with fashion icons at the 92nd St. Y as nicely as a SiriusXM radio show known as “Fashion Insiders With Fern Mallis” immediately after she left IMG. Whilst Mallis naturally knows the fashion biz in New York inside and out, we never ever suspected she was into making fashion. But she is.

Mallis has just announced that she’ll be launching a jewelry collection for QVC named Fern Finds: by Fern Mallis, which she’ll hawk reside throughout New York Fashion Week (obvi), starting on Friday, February ten at 10pm (EST). We chatted with the former Fashion Week head honcho to locate out just what inspired this move to style, whose style she looks up to, and which of her fashion buddies she consulted with ahead of starting her line.

Fashionista: You’ve worked with designers for years–what produced you determine to get in the game?
Fern Mallis: I’ve usually been a creative individual and have developed large events, my apartment, my parties, and some of the items I wear. I do not call myself a “designer” but I’ve often had a sense of my style. This collection is appropriately named “Fern Finds” due to the fact it is inspired by accessories that I have purchased throughout my life. I’ve adapted the pieces so that they can be manufactured and made obtainable for a bigger audience at a reasonable cost.

I’ve read the collection will be inspired by pieces from your travels–what are your preferred finds?
I truly enjoy shopping when I travel…it’s a key component of any trip. I really like discovering new factors and discovering locally-produced, crafted items, as I really feel these never go out of style. I have a fantastic necklace of beads I bought from a woman sitting on the curb in Mumbai on a side street in the Colaba Market. She had a mountain of colorful necklaces in a large basket and I picked through them till I found the excellent a single that I love…In South Africa, I met a really fashionable woman who had a wonderful little shop with jewelry and crafts from several of the ladies operating all over the country. I really like numerous of the multi-beaded, multi-strand necklaces and collars that I purchased from her.

What do you look for in jewelry when you travel?
I look for factors that are fascinating and that you do not see in every shop or know will be readily accessible in NY when you come house. I also look for things that make me happy and make me feel very good and that “talk to me.”

Have you shopped QVC? What about QVC appeals to you?
Yes and I really like the immediacy of it all. It tends to make you have to decide quickly…not like a shop where you browse and then know it will be there subsequent week if you determine to get it. I also like that the “designer/creator/organization rep” can tell you about it and clarify why they really like it or why you ought to acquire it and what makes it specific. It is tough to get somebody in retail to tell you something about what they are selling in a retailer.

How do you like becoming on camera? You seem to be on stage a lot lately! Is there more acting/on camera work in the future?
I’m comfy on camera when I’m talking about factors I know and care about. I did so numerous interviews when I was at the CFDA, operating Fashion Week, and I loved talking about all the fantastic things that were going on. That is what I continue to do now. I may possibly be on the other side of the microphone with 92Y or SiriusXM, but I’m asking concerns and finding designers and folks I like, admire and respect to share their stories. “Love, Loss and What I Wore” was a entirely diverse expertise, a new challenge and adventure, but generally in an location that I am comfortable – talking about how clothes or the knowledge of wearing certain things impacts your life and your memories. Who knows what’s next?

What designers to you appear up to or have you consulted with for this first style endeavor?
I am a fan of too several designers to even begin to list them. But I did share a lot of my journey with FERN FINDS: with Stan Herman, who is a dear buddy, designer and QVC Icon.

Whose style do you enjoy?
This is harder to answer than I thought….the late LuLu de la Falaise, Audrey Hepburn, Donna Karan’s Urban Zen, and Li Edelkoort.

Take a look via some of Fern’s pieces for QVC. Thoughts?

Final night’s six-hour-lengthy challenge didn’t end properly for Project Runway‘s April. The edgy young designer’s wispy purple minidress left the judges underwhelmed to say the least and, with some of the toughest criticism seen so far this season, she became the fourth designer eliminated from the all-star talent pool. But while blueberries led to her ousting (she had to style a dress inspired by the sorbet flavor), she’s got no sour grapes.

Almost everything seemed to go incorrect for you on final night’s episode. Does that mean you saw your elimination coming? Do you hate gelato now?
Project Runway is all about adapting you have to make it function! And like I mentioned final night on the show, there’s only so significantly I could do in six hours. Then it’s out of my hands. It is all about whether [the judges] like my style or not. Final night was just a large mess and I really feel like I actually just fell on my face. So I had that feeling … I’d not been in the top rated, but I’d been in the bottom already — I was seeing a pattern there, that they weren’t actually seeing my aesthetic, or liking it. It really is sad to say, but I was expecting what was going to happen.

Does that make the “auf-ing” any easier?
Well, no! You just feel so weak and so helpless. I mean, I didn’t want to put that garbage out on the runway. It was embarrassing for me to be kicked off figuring out that I’d shown an atrocious style. That’s like me going out and not carrying out the finest… it was the greatest that I could do in that time constraint, but it’s not my very best operate, obviously.

You were the youngest All-Star designer. Was that one thing you had been conscious of?
I didn’t really feel young compared to the other designers at all. At times I actually felt older than them, a little bit far more mature. I just feel like I’m an old soul, I guess.

You came across as fairly quiet, introspective even. Is that accurate?
I’m a fashion designer, but what a lot individuals don’t truly get is that I’m really, very grounded. I like hunting, I like watching Swamp People, and I have country boils on the weekend, okay? I’m a actually down-to-earth Southern girl, so being around these people is really a bit overwhelming for me. They had been a tiny bit too theatrical for me I really feel like Mila was genuinely the only person that I could get up in the morning with and go run on the treadmill and feel like, okay, she’s a standard person.

Is Mila an individual that you’ll root for as the show continues?
Yes, absolutely. I appreciate Mila’s style, I believe that she’s so clean-cut and modern day, but with an edge. She’s just a genius at what she does, and I believe she’s a fashion-forward designer, which is what Project Runway is hunting for. I really feel like she deserves that title.

We haven’t observed a lot conflict in the function space. Was everyone focused on remaining specialist?
Definitely. I believe a lot of people just didn’t want to get back into drama once again and just wanted to, like, put these disputes aside. Michael and I had our moments back in season eight, but we sorted everything out beforehand — when we each returned a lot of men and women had been like, “Aren’t you shocked to see Michael here? You guys do not actually get along, correct?” I just mentioned, “I do not even want to get into it. We’re fine.” I’m a drama-totally free individual, I’m not about to commence to controversy and I believe I lot of folks had been like that. I know Kenley didn’t want anybody to feel of her the way they did when she was on season 5.

How did you find this season’s new judging panel?
I thought that they were really expert. They supplied fantastic feedback, and I don’t disagree with their criticisms whatsoever. The comments had been definitely appreciated on my finish everybody makes jokes and talks about everyone else’s function, so you can’t really get too up in arms about what people are saying. It’s not actual.

And did you really feel Joanna Coles did a very good job replacing Tim Gunn?
Properly, I enjoy Tim Gunn. He was just amazing on my season, and I’ve kept in contact with him. But it was nice to meet Joanna due to the fact she’s so amazing at what she does. She’s extremely intelligent when it comes to fashion … and she said she liked my hair.

So you have kept in touch with Tim since season eight?
Tim has been a excellent make contact with and a great friend. He in fact helped me location some of my clothes on a new ABC Household show, Jane By Style. The show’s characters will be wearing a couple of my styles. A single of the dresses, I’ve dubbed it “the hurricane dress” due to the fact it’s developed out of deconstructed curtains and all sort of linens from abandoned hospitals — [it's] inspired by hurricane harm. It’s super lovely. And then two other of my designs which have a similar shabby chic aesthetic will be appearing on, I believe, the seventh episode. Hopefully people can tune in and watch it!

What other projects are you operating on?
I am operating on my wedding correct now. I’m finding married on March 9. I just completed my wedding dress — it’s a very nontraditional wedding, so it’s an all-black dress. The ceremony is going to be in a huge cemetery in Savannah. It is a stunning place, but a genuinely dark [sort of] beauty and that is kind of what my aesthetic is all about.

A black wedding dress?
Yes. An all-black wedding, in fact. Even the guests will be wearing black.

Have you turn into a bit of a bridezilla?
No, I’m not like that at all. I’ve already sent out invitations that had the year 2010 on them instead of 2012, but, you know, I’m not gonna get up in arms about it. It’s not worth it. No wedding ever goes perfect, appropriate? And that’s just how I am. I like the idea of a tiny bit of imperfection.
