Grazia Every day: What is it about Notes from a Modest Island that you enjoy so a lot?
Mary Portas: I really like the way that Bill Bryson creates very funny, extremely tough hitting messages with no offending everyone. I think he’s brilliant and wanted to meet him for such a lengthy time that I at some point persuaded him to give a speak on travel at a client’s occasion. I assume I had expected VIP behaviour, but he was so self-effacing he arrived on foot.
Grazia Day-to-day: Who will you be recommending it to?
MP: I already advised it, to my daughter when she was 11. She disappeared with it, and all I could hear were gales of laughter!

See Images From the New Dior Inspiration Book
Abrams Books’s newly released Dior Inspiration takes a close look at some of the house’s greatest collections over the years, and reveals a glimpse at the influences behind them. The subject material spans decades (and designers), including everything from Christian Dior’s 1947 New Look to John Galliano’s Russian-inspired spring 2002 couture show. And the references run the gamut, with Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave Off Kanagawa and Russian painter Kazimir Malevich’s Woman with a Rake both playing muse (points to the person who can guess for which shows and seasons without clicking into the images ahead). See a selection of looks and the works that inspired them in our slideshow.
First Look: Patrick Demarchelier’s Photos From the New DIOR COUTURE Book
DIOR COUTURE is a new coffee-table photo-book coming out tomorrow, which chronicles, well, Dior couture. With accompanying text by Ingrid Sischy, it’s a collection of over 100 photos of exquisite and ornate gowns from the Christian Dior house’s haute couture archives — including pieces by Dior himself, and by his successors, Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, and John Galliano. All the images were shot by renowned photographer Patrick Demarchelier and feature top models, including Karlie Kloss, Gemma Ward, Gisele Bündchen, and Natalia Vodianova. Click through our slideshow to see a selection of photos from the book.
Heresy: Bjorg jewellery video + look book
If I were to give you a detailed analysis into Bjorg’s spring 2012 video Heresy I’d have to concede it were all guesswork. It’s the kind of film that’s open to your own interpretation. What I can say though is that it’s strangely gripping, made of just a few lengthy cuts that sweep a barren landscape on which the interpretable action takes place.
As for Bjorg’s jewellery collection for the season – explored in far more detail in the look book than in the largely thematic video – these are pieces that play to mythology, dreamscapes, the geometry and geology that have so successfully devoured other jewellery trends this year to become the number one desire. Organic, hippie yet futurist, raw yet refined. Ear-cuffs and cigarette holding rings give a unique (and very editorial worthy) expansion to the usual jewellery suspects.

Lady Gaga In Dolce & Gabbana – ‘Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson’ Book Launch Party
November 23rd, 2011

After wearing Chanel and Stephane Rolland the night before, Lady Gaga was out again last night in New York City to celebrate yet another collaboration: the ‘Lady Gaga x Terry Richardson’ book launch party.
This time the singer donned a Dolce & Gabbana dress.
The full-length black lace dress with a plastic flower on the shoulder, which left little to the imagination, was typically Gaga: revealing, shocking and treading a fine line between being sassy and tacky.

Lady Gaga Reads Aloud from her Terry Richardson Coffee Table Book!
If you were upset because the ongoing saga of Versace for H&M is drawing to a close, don’t be! There are plenty of other things to look forward to. To give just one example, off the very top of our head, this utterly indulgent and slightly pretentious (in the very best fashion photographer tradition) 350 page (yes, you won’t be reading this on the bus to work) tome, all about the life of rock star Lady Gaga, as documented faithfully, down the last corset change and bath bubble by the rather controversial bespectacled ageing hipster, Terry Richardson. It’s due to come out in a matter of mere days!
To whet everyone’s appetite for the forthcoming publication, Lady Gaga has created this amazingly intimate video where she coyly twinkles at the camera and reads aloud from the foreword to the book, spouting such priceless aphorisms like, ‘Terry has taught me deeply profound truths about myself. I have discovered through him that shame is an obsolete notion and an apology is an injustice to any performer.’
We couldn’t agree more, Gaga. Although, if we are being 100% honest, we think we prefer you when you are singing.
