Chanel Shows Turkey-Inspired Pre-Fall Collection Somewhere Other Than Turkey
Chanel’s pre-fall and resort shows often force editors and famous people to travel around the globe to exotic destinations. Last year Karl Lagerfeld showed pre-fall in Shanghai, while his most recent resort collection was shown in St. Tropez. Anyway, this season, Karl brought pre-fall back to Paris, where he showed a Byzantine-inspired collection. “Hand Lagerfeld a fragment and he can construct a wall of shimmering fashion possibility,” enthuses WWD.
Lagerfeld had toyed with showing in Istanbul, where Chanel just opened a 3,800-square-foot flagship and where Byzantium once flourished on the banks of the Bosphorus. Yet by showing in its Rue Cambon couture salons, transformed into a gilded Turkish tearoom, Chanel put the focus on the clothes. “It’s all about mosaics,” said Lagerfeld, who traveled to Ravenna, Italy, to view the intricate artworks from the fifth and sixth centuries that adorn its churches and monuments. “I thought it was an influence that could be very much Chanel,” he said. “It’s also about a spirit.”

Video: A Riveting Behind-the-Scenes Look at Karl Lagerfeld’s Pirelli Calendar Shoot (NSFW)
A 24-minute behind-the-scenes video of Karl Lagerfeld’s shoot of the 2011 Pirelli calendar, in which models portray ancient Greek and Roman gods, may be one of the most fascinating pieces of fashion film footage we’ve seen. Highlights include:
1. Expansive views of Karl’s Paris studio, the walls of which are filled with so many books that it hurts the brain to imagine what he’d have to do if he ever found a bedbug.
2. Abbey Lee Kershaw speaking about Karl, especially when she calls him “the Einstein of high fashion.”
3. Daria Werbowy pontificating about models. “We’re kind of unearthly human beings,” she says. No shit.
4. Julianne Moore posing as the only non-model on the shoot. Karl says he never expected her to do it, but then she explains that basically she couldn’t say no to the ultimate validation of her hotness.
5. The nudity in this year’s calendar, which feels artistic rather than raunchy and gratuitous as it has in years past. Karl seems to be celebrating the strength and beauty of the naked or nearly naked human body, a striking departure from Terry Richardson’s shoot, where he had the girls get naked in the forest and hug sloths.
6. Karl discussing retouching. He decides Erin Wasson’s shots are so good they don’t need retouching.
7. What models do when their shoot is done. Have you ever wondered if a model who is naked on set bothers covering up when she’s done and goes to look at her shots with the photographer or just stays naked because she has nothing to hide? See in the video.

Gilt Groupe’s Full-Price Men’s Site Slated to Launch in July
Gilt Groupe realizes that men, who approach shopping with the utmost effort to get in, get out, and get on with life rather than dig and dig for a great find to brag about later, will just as easily pay full prices as sale prices. The site’s ten full-price men’s sales (or non-sales, as it were) held over the past six months were a “tremendous” success according to John Auerbach, who is heading up Gilt’s full-price men’s site, which is scheduled to launch in July and offer things by 75 to 100 brands. The one million men registered on the site constitute a third of the site’s business, so it makes sense to finally give them their own Shopbop rather than force them to shop flash sales in some frantic fashion, as though they actually care about clothes. God forbid they display any eagerness toward fashion in the least.

Stella McCartney was reportedly taken in for a Cesarean section this evening in London to give birth to her fourth child. She already has three (ages 2, 3, and 5) with her husband, Alasdhair Willis. So congrats to her!

Karl Lagerfeld to Design for Macy’s
If you were wondering what “mass elitism” means to Karl Lagerfeld, it seems the story begins with him — the elitism — working with a store for the masses: Macy’s. Karl will design a capsule collection for Macy’s to be sold in 250 stores and on the Internet beginning in September of next year. His Macy’s line is the first in the retailer’s new designer series, through which designer lines will rotate in the Impulse section of the store every two months. The cycle then begins in February 2012 with former John Galliano employee Kinder Aggugini, followed by Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Calvin Klein, Costume National, and Versace. To think — Donatella at Macy’s! We’d have sooner expected to see her doing her own shopping at Rite Aid.
Macy’s has had several high-profile collaborations, with Madonna and designers like Rachel Roy and Tommy Hilfiger. But their lines have never induced the same mayhem as an H&M launch, while Karl’s H&M collection sold out in hours, and Lanvin’s line for the store had people dropping thousands. It’s hard to imagine fashion-fan riots in Macy’s over clothes, but maybe this is the beginning of a new era.
While Karl’s Macy’s line won’t technically constitute “masstige,” sources say, the Kaiser is working on another true masstige line launching for fall 2011, mostly for women but with some men’s items too.
Tom Ford ‘Very Much Likes Beautiful Wrinkles’

Tom Ford graciously shares the cover of the issue of French Vogue he guest-edited with 15-year-old model Daphne Groeneveld, who is notably fully clothed while Ford has likewise contained his chest and its resplendent oft-showing hair behind her. Carine Roitfeld says that Ford took his guest-editing job “very seriously” and even spent a couple of days in the magazine’s offices right in the middle of Paris Fashion Week. But this is just another testament to the sacrifices that must be made for that signature Fordian perfection.

Good Luck Buying Kate Middleton’s Blue Issa Dress
Within 24 hours of Kate Middleton strutting before the press with Princess Diana’s sapphire-and-diamond ring on her left ring finger wearing a matching blue dress by Issa, the £385 frock sold out at Harvey Nichols, where everyone has gone Issa mad. Store-buying director Averyl Oates said the store has “been inundated with requests” about the label since the photo op.
