Shoe Designer Manolo Blahni Manolo Blahnik didn’t know who Suri Cruise was!

Adorable Alert! We’ve just watched this brilliant video interview of Manolo Blahnik, with Amy Odell of NYMag’s The Cut blog. (We wondered what she looked like and now we know). She went into Manolo’s New York boutique on 54th street where Manolo was signing copies of his book The Elves and the Shoemaker, which Amy describes as ‘a lovely little stocking stuffer for well-formed shoe addicts and shoe addicts in training’

We know from our colleagues who’ve had the privilege of meeting the great man that he is something of a charmer, and when we watched the video footage, we were not disappointed. But he’s also pretty hilarious and we particularly loved his non-verbal exclamations. When asked what he thought of big platform shoes that have so fashionable lately, he said ‘well, some of my own shoes are vulgar. . .but not as vulgar as . . .’ before making an indescribable exhalation of air combined with eyebrow moves. Love it!

We loved that Amy asked him to recall the most comic mispronunciations of his name in the past; Magnolia, anyone? Additionally, there is a priceless moment when the interviewer has to explain who Suri Cruise is. Word to the wise Manolo – the mini fan of heels is likely to be providing you with some very lucrative custom in the near future, so you’d better get on Google and find out who she is!

This afternoon on the 32nd floor of a midtown skyscraper, a camera crew shadowed Rachel Zoe as she showed the spring 2012 collection for her namesake line. Zoe characters like her husband Rodger and “execubitch” Mandana milled about as she greeted her fellow fashion luminaries — Elle editor Robbie Myers, Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing, and Japanese Vogue fashion director Anna Dello Russo, who chatted with Zoe on-camera. “I want you to wear it!” Rachel told Russo. Would she? “I’m wearing, for sure, the white stuff over there,” Russo told us when she stepped off-camera. “I think Rachel is doing very well because she has her own aesthetic, and she also projects herself in the clothes. It’s really, like, L.A. — an L.A. collection but done in an international way.”

For spring, Zoe says she looked to “Brigitte Bardot. Late sixties, early seventies, running around the south of France, being her glamorous self, but never kind of trying to be glamorous, she just is because she’s like the coolest thing ever.” Part of Zoe’s prescribed effortlessness can be seen in the flats — flats! — worn by many models.

“The gold sequin minidress there? That dress is sort of a lot on its own, so I wanted to bring it down a notch with simple flat shoes. But I also kind of wanted to show how you can kind of do glamour by day — like if she threw on a leather jacket with that you could totally wear that during the day,” explained Zoe, who says her typical shoes are five to seven inches high. “My entire staff laughed at me because I’ve actually worn [the flats] like three or four times and they are so comfortable,” Zoe continued. “If I was five foot nine, I’d actually probably never wear heels.”

A less easy look to pull off in the collection is, well, those all-white pieces, which designers have persistently shown all week, after the white (after white after white) looks they showed last spring. And it’s not that they’re hard to pull off because of the old-fashioned notion that “white makes you look fat” — but because hey, this is New York, it’s a dirty place, and we consume foods and beverages that are not clear. Though Rachel is a “huge proponent of white,” she advocates carrying stain remover. The best one? “Baby wipes. carry baby wipes in your bag and you just rub stains off.”

Though fans have watched Zoe stress out over work on The Rachel Zoe Project for years, Zoe says she’s more relaxed than ever, even while her workload is bigger than ever. “Having my son now, it’s actually given me clarity and making it easier. My time is limited and so everything’s more focused, and I’m actually way more efficient. And I’m also happy all the time,” she says. “Everyone on my team has actually said to me, ‘You’re so calm!’ I’m like, I have Skyler. Everything people said [having a baby] does, it does.”

“I love this kind of woman,” Russo says. “They do family, they do business, they’re working so hard, so bravo.”

Tory Burch scored her Fall 2011 show to INXS and the Cure, and the collection had British tones as well — “British countryside,” that is. Amy Odell was backstage with a camera to find out more about the designer’s favorite “elegant tomboy” looks.

As we enter a new year, it’s good to know that some things never change. Like Lady Gaga, who can be counted on to go out in near-freezing temperatures wearing a completely weather-inadequate outfit when most celebrities are hiding indoors, privately dieting their way toward rapidly approaching awards season. Here you see Gaga coming out of the Bruce Field store in Paris, wearing a nude thong over her fishnets. Bruce Field sells preppy, reasonably priced clothing and is currently having a blowout sale including these €10 khakis. “She bought a number of things,” a store employee told People.

Among the items a still-pantless Gaga and an assistant brought up from the downstairs try-on area and piled onto the shop’s counter, an eyewitness says, “were pants and a lot of scarves. Most everything in purple.” Did she buy pants? “I can’t tell you,” the shop employee says. “I can tell you she stayed about 20 minutes and when she left there were some 30 photographers-and loads of fans-outside. It’s been a most unusual afternoon.”

And a most slow news week. But she is still so interesting in a not-at-all-interesting way!

Chanel’s pre-fall and resort shows often force editors and famous people to travel around the globe to exotic destinations. Last year Karl Lagerfeld showed pre-fall in Shanghai, while his most recent resort collection was shown in St. Tropez. Anyway, this season, Karl brought pre-fall back to Paris, where he showed a Byzantine-inspired collection. “Hand Lagerfeld a fragment and he can construct a wall of shimmering fashion possibility,” enthuses WWD.

Lagerfeld had toyed with showing in Istanbul, where Chanel just opened a 3,800-square-foot flagship and where Byzantium once flourished on the banks of the Bosphorus. Yet by showing in its Rue Cambon couture salons, transformed into a gilded Turkish tearoom, Chanel put the focus on the clothes. “It’s all about mosaics,” said Lagerfeld, who traveled to Ravenna, Italy, to view the intricate artworks from the fifth and sixth centuries that adorn its churches and monuments. “I thought it was an influence that could be very much Chanel,” he said. “It’s also about a spirit.”

But the opportunity for a dramatic Turkish fashion show has not been lost or forgotten: Chanel will stage the same show in Istanbul next spring, Chanel president Bruno Pavlovsky said. He expects double-digit growth for this Paris-Byzance pre-fall collection, explaining, “We have a growing demand for this kind of very outstanding product. It’s another way for a client to feel unique.” And a fabulous way for Chanel to make money. “Heavily embellished” items can run from about ,000 to ,000, while plainer jackets cost around ,000.
