The 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards had been held last night, and as with other award shows, the stars had been out on the red carpet, which means we have plenty of fabulous fashion to talk about! Scroll on down to scope out some of the most notable looks from the event:

Best five Very best-Dressed

Here are my picks for finest dressed at this year’s SAG Awards, in no distinct order:

Michelle Williams in Valentino

Michelle Williams usually rocks demure, vintage-inspired frocks and last night was no exception. Her classic red Valentino gown was adorned with feminine lace detailing and Michelle added some red sandals and a crimson box clutch. What did you think of her head-to-toe red look?

Shailene Woodley in L’Wren Scott

The SAG Awards are much more laid back than the Golden Globes or Oscars, so I really like that The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley chose to wear this really enjoyable, young, and colorful L’Wren Scott gown. The Hawaiian-like print seemed to be a nod to her film’s setting and the infant blue hue with pops of red created a statement. Shailene kept her hair and makeup low-essential, in order to let the dress be the focus.

Octavia Spencer in Tadashi Shoji

SAG Award winner Octavia Spencer was one of the 1st stars I saw on the red carpet final night, but I kept thinking about her silver Tadashi Shoji gown the whole time! The shimmery dress had a wonderful mix of textures — a delicate floral-applique top and super-flattering, silky wrap skirt. Octavia also sported a sleek updo, which actually showcased her beautiful statement earrings.

Emma Stone in Alexander McQueen

Emma Stone killed it fashion-smart at the Golden Globes a couple of weeks ago and she as soon as again looked amazing at last night’s ceremony. Her tea-length Alexander McQueen dress channeled Old Hollywood, even though the sky-high ankle strap pumps and gold-handled clutch kept the appear contemporary and youthful. Can this girl do no wrong?!

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Couture

This tiny quantity from the Givenchy Spring ’12 couture collection had a lot of fashion commentators on the fence, but I for one particular was in enjoy with this dress. The gown has a type of edgy-meets-glam vibe and although not absolutely everyone could pull off what is basically a white tank under a mesh best, Zoe did it flawlessly.

Emily Blunt in Oscar de la Renta

How gorgeous is this Oscar de la Renta gown?! Emily Blunt stood out final night in this bright, kelly green frock, which perfectly complemented her coloring. She completed her glam look with with a simple updo, many sparkling bangles and a matching clutch.

Rose Byrne in Elie Saab

Rose Byrne took a definite fashion risk on final night’s red carpet with this sleek Elie Saab pantsuit. This was a prime instance of a “love it or hate it” sort of appear — you either think it is fabulous or a fashion disaster. We enjoy that she took a threat -  what did you assume of Rose’s daring ensemble?

Lea Michele in Versace

Lea Michele showed off her looong legs last night in a Grecian-style Versace gown. The soft, gray, sculptural dress undoubtedly turned a lot of heads on the red carpet with its thigh-high slit, but I genuinely loved the way Lea toned down the appear by wearing her hair down with a straightforward side part.

Viola Davis in Marchesa

Outstanding Lead Actress winner Viola Davis created a statement on the red carpet in this white Marchesa gown with an ornate golden overlay on the bust. Both shades complemented her skin tone flawlessly and made her positively glow, while her coordinating accessories were the icing on the cake.

Least Favorite Appear

As considerably as we wish they could, not each celeb makes the appropriate fashion choice on the red carpet. Here’s 1 look that wasn’t a huge hit last night:

Kristen Wiig in Balenciaga

Okay, so I’m on the fence with this one particular: I truly liked this straightforward and chic white Balenciaga gown, but I could NOT get past that weird, chunky choker! It seems like such an odd choice to wear with a halter-neck gown and didn’t match the rest of her appear at all. What do you think– did the choker make this look a fashion faux pas or you willing to give Kristen a pass?

What piques the interest of hot new fashion talent?  For some, it is the style path much less traveled. Veering away from the easy route – bling, novelty fabrics, out-there design – Central Saint Martins grads Levi Palmer &amp Matthew Harding discovered themselves attracted to the challenge of overhauling that staid wardrobe staple, the white shirt, and producing it fresh once again. Part of the cause was timing Harding graduated in 2010 in the depths of a deep recession. “Suddenly the notion of designing party dresses didn’t rather fit the mood,” the London native lately explained to Vogue (Feb. 2012). The duo looked to the past for inspiration, in particular the intricate pleating and hand finishing techniques of 30s couturiers like Madame Gres. With such a laser-like concentrate on unique details, the fact they limit their palette to a single garment tends to make sense as a distraction-totally free way of “highlighting the progressive beauty and craft of the garments.” 

Just before launching palmer//harding at S/S 12 London Fashion Week, the pair was nominated for the prestigious ANDAM award 2011 in Paris. Their fledgling label is now sponsored by TOPSHOP’s NEWGEN program, which previously mentored Erdem, Christopher Kane &amp Alexander McQueen.

In May last year, The Honourable Daphne Guinness took to the shop-front windows of legendary department store Barney’s in New York to become a real life mannequin. Originally, we admit we were crossing fingers for something fun and cheeky from the haute couture collector, journalist, actress, muse, designer and so on – along the lines of Kim Catrall’s classic ‘80s movie, Mannequin  – complete with an Andre Leon Talley-alike Hollywoooood (if you don’t know what we’re talking about, we’ve added a clip below of both the actual result and the old movie). But it was, in fact, a chance for this creative canvas to bring to life the fascinating process of her getting dressed and ready for the Met Ball. Haven’t  you always pondered Daphne’s pre-party rituals? After all, we did recently learn that she uses nail varnish as lipstick… Onlookers peered in as Daphne donned a fully feathered and suitably dramatic Alexander McQueen gown to pose and drape her way around the enclosed space in her signature heel-less platform like a true pro.

She must’ve enjoyed the store stage SO much, that she’s set up a new Daphne mannequin project for February this year. However, there’s a slight twist on this one for Paris store Printemps… Photographer Nick Knight of SHOWstudio (with whom Daphne has collaborated on many a directional shoot) will create cutting edge 3D virtual versions of her wearing the likes of Maison Martin Margiela, Paco Rabanne and Gareth Pugh. Therefore, Daphne doesn’t even have to be there! Although we’re hoping she’ll make an appearance in the flesh. These windows will be unveiled on 6th February along with fashion videos by Knight of Daphne, an in-store SHOWstudio gallery edit of super-special pieces and an interactive display curated by multimedia artist Danny Brown, where passers-by can upload their own photos. And judging from last year’s crowd, we don’t think they’ll be strolling along in jeans and a scruffy tee…

Red Carpet Fashion Awards

There had been reiterations of past season’s usual suspects: shearling, fantastic leather, varsity jackets and cropped outerwear.  The require for a sharp overcoat in a man’s wardrobe has never been so clear.  Those on display in almost every single Italian-shown collection were wealthy in fabric, impeccably tailored and practically screaming, “It’s time to grow up.”  As for what’s new, here’s what the boys were wearing that the girls may like too:

Capes, cloaks and cape-like coats: As soon as Dolce &amp Gabbana’s runway show began, I thought to myself, “Let’s go to the opera! 200 years ago!” Yes, it was all 19th century romanticism for Stefano and Domenico, and included in their past-is-present collection were flowing hooded cloaks fitting for any Phantom. Alexander McQueen, Ermenegildo Zegna, and Calvin Klein all had their personal variations (Mugler just showed them in Paris as nicely), many with that most essential modern day day update: sleeves.

Brocade: Occasionally it wasn’t just a cape coat at Dolce—it was a brocade cape coat at Dolce. The supplies were luxe and the gold, silver and jeweled ornamentation on the blazers, jackets, shoes, and, yes, even socks got fancy. McQueen and Bottega Veneta showed more accessible interpretation of this trend, basically operating a raised embellishment along a blazer lapel or the edge of a sleeve. The quixotic effect, although, remains the very same.

Pony hair: To be far more certain, burgundy pony hair. On a tunic at McQueen, an overcoat at Z Zegna, a blazer at Canali, and almost all of the above—even a complete suit— at Emporio Armani. It is shimmery and totally glam—just in case that is your thing.

Velvet: At a re-see appointment one afternoon in Milan, a PR rep for the label had to get true: “Is everyone really undertaking velvet once more? I really feel like it’s my senior year of college again.” The answer—much to my colleague’s chagrin—is yes, yes we are. Whilst velvet hasn’t completely faded out in years past, it returned in complete force for subsequent fall. Trousers and blazers were the most frequent velvet garment, but where it seemed most fresh this season was in…

Tailoring: For so many seasons it seemed like we couldn’t get away from the boxy cuts and then slowly but certainly designers made their suits tighter and sleeker. Finally, this season it looks like suits are back to being superbly tailored, significantly the very same way that womenswear is reverting to the lady-like silhouettes and cuts that define femininity.  There was nary a baggy leg, drop crotch, or slouchy blazer in sight. Dolce, Bottega, and Ferragamo, who up till last season had been nevertheless getting generous in their cuts, brought every thing closer to the body.  No one was very as tailored as Burberry Prorsum it looks like it’d take a good greasing to slip into the brand’s collection.

Prints: As far as prints go, Miuccia really demonstrated a keen eye for pattern in the micro-print fabrics of brown, burgundy, mustard and red of Prada’s collection.  Her’s was among the strongest of the season—and not just due to the fact celebrities like Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell, Adrien Brody and William Dafoe walked in the show. Canali followed suit with a similar bent and a powerful use of stripes. Even at Missoni—the pattern masters—size was dialed back for a much less abrasive, but far more intricate visual.

Color: The palette of AW12, beyond a few popping collections from Versace and Roberto Cavalli, wasn’t very vibrant. Grey continues to be the go-to color and deep emerald green was about as adventurous as factors got. Together ,with the aforementioned burgundy, the two had been seen in practically every collection. Bottega had some impressive footwear, once more proving Tomas Maier’s continued dedication to amping up the house’s shoe presence. But if any person steered away from somber hues, it was for wealthy mustard, camel, or, winter white.  And in some cases—Jil Sander, Costume Nationale—it was all about black on black.
