Dressing Your Age: Thirties (30s) – Part 1
Introduction
In my last article we looked at how to dress in your twenties and as it turns out, it was quite easy. It’s a time of waltzing into a store, knowing most pieces are designed to fit you like a glove. I also preached the value of moderation and restraint – and it’s here, as we turn the page into the thirties, that these values become yet more valuable.
As the big three-zero arrives, a man should know what image he is trying to display, even if he cannot put a name or category to the image. By now preferences will have been formed and key items will have been well-worn. Unlike the twenties, in this article I won’t be discussing the image that clothes bring and the like because by now you should have a firm grasp of what works with your body type, skin colour etc. and what you like and don’t like.
Instead, in this article we’ll be looking at how the thirty year old male can look his best and what should be to hand from the wardrobe. Once again it’s important to note that these are general suggestions and are not for everyone. Whilst being a cross country phenomena and influential art form, fashion boils down to being something extremely personal. So be sure to wear things for the right reason – because you like and feel confident wearing it.
Wardrobe Basics. Minimal Style, Best Style!
Since I like to keep my reading diverse and keep an eye out for everything and anything happening around, I found this really interesting piece about not just a closet, but a wardrobe! A Minimal Wardrobe!
I hope you’ll watch the video as it’s really short and very interesting and I also hope you’ll share your thoughts and feelings about the concept. Béa Johnson came to my by means of “zero – waste” living style than through her art. Though she’s an accomplished and acclaimed artist, I want to highlight another side of Béa. At least today: her zero – waste lifestyle. And more specifically, her zero – waste closet. What does that mean exactly? It means a basic wardrobe. Minimal style at its core.
Now that you’ve just watched (hopefully) the video, what’s your first impression? Do Bea’s closet presentation inspires you in any way? Is this the kind of style minimalism you thought “basic wardrobe” implies? I have so many questions about this and I feel so enthusiastic about the idea, I just couldn’t let it go without giving it my two cents, and, why not, discuss it with you (I know I’d love to hear you out on the matter!)
Celebrities Love…Leather Sleeves
November 22nd, 2011

With the holidays right around the corner, here’s a trend to put at the top of your wish list: the leather-sleeved coat/jacket.
Leather is a chic yet rough fabric that adds edge to even the most feminine pieces.
Key Fall Fashion Must-Have: A Snazzy White Tuxedo Jacket
SHOP THE Appear: Jason Wu white tuxedo blazer Zero+MariaCornejo red “Kana” pencil skirt & “Nya” asymmetric silk top YSL necklace Alexander Wang sunglasses Gucci bag – all obtainable at NET-A-PORTER.com
leopard “Katy Bow” wedges – Payless.com
Each season, there’s 1 standout piece that emerges from the fray that is super-simple to add to your wardrobe (in contrast to, say, the calf-length skirt that really should probably come with an operating manual) you merely throw it on and it freshens up your entire appear, regardless of whether it’s with jeans, at the office, or out on the town. This fall, that key piece is definitely the white tuxedo jacket (like this fantabulous 1 by Jason Wu).
Of course, pairing it with a black wide-legged pant or elegant crepe jumpsuit
cinched with a giant black belt is a no-brainer ditto tailored jeans & massive heels. Nonetheless, to have some enjoyable, go for color – like a fiery red pencil skirt, zany sunglasses, and cute leopard heels! Meow!

A New Crop of Designers Wants to Make Fashion Less Wasteful

A small group of international designers is aiming to create clothes with zero waste, e.g. “not so much as a scrap of fabric on the cutting room floor.” How wasteful is fashion in the first place? Well, according to the Times, “fifteen to twenty percent of the fabric used to produce clothing winds up in the nation’s landfills because it’s cheaper to dump the scraps than to recycle them.” That’s not okay, says “a small but impassioned coterie of designers,” which includes Mark Liu, Julian Roberts, Zandra Rhodes, and many a Parsons student. Sounds idealistic, but the practice is actually gathering steam:
“The book ‘Shaping Sustainable Fashion: Changing the Way We Make and Use Clothes’ by Alison Gwilt and Timo Rissanen, zero-waste pioneers, will be published in February by Earthscan. And an exhibition of zero-waste fashions, curated by Mr. Rissanen and another zero-waste designer, Holly McQuillan, will be held in New Zealand next spring and in New York the following fall. Also in March, an exhibition, ‘No Waste/Zero Waste’ will open at the Averill and Bernard Leviton A + D Gallery in Chicago, part of Columbia College Chicago.”
Still, the mission is easier said than done: Zero-waste jeans need to fit together “like a puzzle,” and “these techniques have not made much headway with large manufacturers.” One handsome zero-waste designer and Parsons professor, Timo Rissanen, even compared zero-waste designing to “basically having to learn to design again.” But kudos to these kids. If you see some cute fashion boys and girls walking around in jeans that fit so nicely they could be compared to jigsaw puzzles, there is surely some hope for a real trend here.
DKNY Jeans Juniors Fall Winter 2010 Collection
DKNY Jeans Juniors collection is not for the children, as you may have suspected just reading the title. (I thought it was for kids, I admit!) Oh, no! Juniors by DKNY standards is somewhere between 15 and 30, undecidedly grunge and definitely chic.
I’m having a hard time coping with the draped skinny pants (I think they’d look bad on almost anyone above size zero) but other than that, I’m loving everything else. The army-inspired layered looks, the frilly micro mini skirts (click through to see them)… I wonder if I qualify for Juniors with my “young at heart” spirit… maybe they’d ask an identity card upon making your order/payment… Do you have a DKNY Jeans Juniors favorite?
