Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by Sailor Moon

Growing up, I wasn’t allowed to watch significantly television. Even though it has left me conversationally stunted when it comes to discussing ’90s pop culture, there was one glorious exception to the no-Television rule: Sailor Moon.
So far, the Geek Chic column has focused predominantly on science fiction and fantasy, but the world of geek absolutely extends far beyond those two genres. This time, we’re boldly exploring a medium we haven’t covered before: animation (particularly, Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime). Though there are scores of notable anime series, Sailor Moon is among the most common.

Movie Inspiration: Fashion Inspired by Desperately Seeking Susan

Film is my all-time favored source of fashion inspiration. From blockbuster hits to tiny indie flicks, you can bet that a team of individuals spent hours making the best sartorial look that aids tell their story in a cohesive way. Oftentimes, the actor or actress has some input in the style of the character they play — and that was absolutely the case in the movie Desperately Searching for Susan.
Madonna was cast in this film largely because of the appear and feel they wanted to bring to the film. Her style defined the appear of a decade, and Desperately Searching for Susan serves as the best lookbook for the era.
Dressember diary – one week of dresses down!
We’re over a week into my Dressember challenge, and while I have definitely not failed to wear a dress every day, I have struggled with the photographs – very little natural light causes all kinds of problems, so next week I must make more of an effort to take my pics in the office where things don’t look quite so…orange! Just this once, please forgive the bad snaps and stick with me as I continue to chronicle my month of wearing nothing but dresses…
I left you on Friday with a star printed maxi, and since then, here’s what I’ve worn…

The Best Tricks to Pulling Your Hair Back

If we had to pinpoint the return of the braid as a fashion statement, it’d be the side braids at Alexander Wang’s SS09 show. Given that then, they’ve turn into wispier, and a lot more Heidi-like, piled high atop the head. On runways, they’re pulled to the side, messy and undone—in many approaches it is the excellent summer hairstyle (specifically this summer), but like many beauty trends the most carefree seeking ones are typically the hardest to replicate.
New York Magazine swears by John Barrett’s Braid Bar, which opened inside Bergdorf Goodman earlier this summer. Their particular tester donned the braid all through 96 hours of outdoor activities, four nights of sleep and numerous train rides, making its $ 45 cost tag a steal. But if you’d rather pull it back your self, or don’t live in New York, we’ve rounded up a couple of of the finest accessories with which to secure your locks.
Emi-Jay Summer 2011 Collection Hair Ties. No matter whether worn in your hair or on your wrist, these hand-dyed hair ties from Emi-Jay are a colorful option to boring black.
Gap & Chicago vs. Givenchy & Marc Jacobs
We met this couple in Harajuku and had to get some photos of their casual style. On the correct with a black head band is Takahiro, a 19-year-old student. He’s wearing a white Givenchy shirt with red cuffed shorts from a resale shop. His black boots are from Dr. Martens. His accessories include a Marc Jacobs bangle that he bought at the Omotesando shop, another bangle and a ring. His cool quilted black backpack is also from Marc by Marc Jacobs.
The cute girl on the left with a red knitted headband is Ishii, also an 18-year-old college student. Her faded denim overalls from a shop named Chicago are worn with a white Gap blouse. Like her buddy Takahiro, she’s wearing Dr. Martens shoes. Her purse if produced from a shiny textured fabric.
Ishii’s accessories from American Apparel and other shops include a Timeco sports watch, a bracelet with gold studs, goggles about her neck, a delicate gold star necklace. Fun touches are a Cub Scout neckerchief and a toy soldier peeking out of the pockets of her overalls.
Marvelous millinery from Maison Michel
Written by Shitika Anand
Milliner Maison Michel has when once more proved that you don’t have to be at the races or a luxurious high tea party in England’s countryside to wear an intricate headpiece.
It practically seems trivial to think of the time when you thought that headwear was just about hats. Modest, medium and big – the alternatives usually started and ended there.
But in this Paris-based atelier (which is now owned by Chanel), the art of designing headwear is treated like haute couture. The essence and beauty of Paris whispers via the detailed work in every piece in this luxury label’s look book for fall 2011.
