Looks on Campus: Jamie – Oregon State University
Winter is upon us, and it’s specifically true here in Oregon. In the tiny college town of Corvallis, we’ve had snow, rain, flooding, and even a lot more rain, coupled with school delays and cancellations (which are quite rare) all in one particular week! Finally, we’re past that craziness and a small rain here and there can’t dampen our spirits about searching positively fabulous, rain or shine.
I had noticed Jamie in class each and every now and then, considering that we are the identical major, and had often noticed her impeccable sense of style. But on this specifically dreary day, she walked into lecture with an outfit so sweet and happy you would have expected it to be 65 and sunny outside. Her lace-up boots, adorable printed dress and pink bow caught my eye the minute she took off her scarf and raincoat – a fashionable one, at that. Read on to find out a lot more about Jamie’s exclusive style!

For Spring 2011, the Fashion Color Palette Takes an Inspired Journey of Exotic Hues
For almost two decades, color authority Pantone has surveyed the designers at New York Fashion Week about their top color picks & trends. Spring 2011 found them packing their (design) bags for exotic locales including Africa, India, Peru, and Turkey. “The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones,” notes Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011 about the intriguing color combos that could transport any shopper eager for a bit of escapism from the daily grind straight to fabulous foreign lands. “By cleverly combining complementary colors, those that are opposites on the color wheel, they have created a striking intensity to the palette. These unique color combinations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall, with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes.”
Colleen Sherin, Fashion Director for Saks Fifth Avenue agrees. "It is clear that the colors, textiles and cultures of India and Africa are inspiring many designers. Earth tones, Khakis and Olives, in addition to complementary Vegetable and Berry tones, should be key." For Ken Dowling of Neiman Marcus (Fashion Director), the deep pinks, hot corals, and brilliant blues herald a return to a more carefree time: "The exotic locales of Marrakech and Morocco that inspired the bohemian influences of Yves Saint Laurent in the '70s." And while Essie Weingarten, Founder of Essie Cosmetics is seeing an "inevitable" return to a historic center of style – "fashion, design, literature – you name it…we are seeing Parisian sensibility in everything right now (including their own Spring 2011 nail color collection), for the Costume Designer of "Desperate Housewives," it's less a physical location than a state of mind. "It isn't a place that you can go to. Or come from. Or even be in," explains Cate Adair. "Rather, it's a place that is deep inside each and every person, a place that provides the pulse of our time – the human heart. For where the heart is, there is hope, And in today's difficult world, hope more than ever is the fuel we must burn to carry on. And more than any city or landscape or physical surroundings could do, hope still moves us to create beautiful things, even in the face of adversity." For Spring/Summer 2011, Look for a Watery-Cool Trend in Beauty
Throughout history, extraordinary myths involving deities, mystical creatures and elemental spirits have all celebrated the the emotional power of water. An element now endangered by climate changes and pollution, water is precious and revered, the cause of war, and the focus of stories which have long accompanied and influenced our collective psyche and evolution. Water carries the creative potential for transformation, both physical
and spiritual – and Gaia, Venus, Athena, Adonis, Sirens, Narcissus, Ophelia, Fauns, Nymphs, Medusa and Calypso will all be helping bridge the imaginary with the physical in Summer 2011.
The spiritual and the scientific recently merged in Mythological Muses, a trend presentation by Emmanuelle Linard of Edelkoort Inc. who pointed out that the beauty and health sectors will be increasingly influenced by water, in particular funded scientific research which focuses on water preservation, cleansing and use, and understanding how its chemical and physical properties impact our lives.
