Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by Marvel’s The Avengers

You know that tingly sensation of awe and excitement you get right after seeing a truly great film? Properly, apart from leaving me with a serious hankering for shawarma, Marvel’s The Avengers undoubtedly gave me that oh-my-gosh-you-guys-let’s-watch-that-yet again feeling. Its all-star cast includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, and Cobie Smulders.
I saw the movie last Saturday night, but I still can’t cease thinking about it all: the epic battle scenes, the hilarious a single-liners, the seriously attractive cast, and of course, the style! And what far better way to channel my newfound obsession with comic books and superheroes than with a Geek Chic fashion post?

Antique Tunic & Rosary Necklace vs. Baby the Stars Shine Bright & Innocent World
Here’s one of the more unique couples that we’ve seen recently in Harajuku. The stylish guy on the right with wire-rimmed glasses is a 21-year student. His long white tunic and black-trimmed white pants are antique. His accessories, including a rosary bead necklace, a small vintage watch on a chain and a ruby pendant necklace, are also antique. He’s also wearing two chain bracelets (one with a skeleton charm) and a leather wristband with a silver medallion. His black-and-white shoes are Dr. Martens and he’s carrying a black leather Coach bag.
On the left is Akemi, who’s 24 and works in sales. Her outfit includes a black cropped sweater from Baby the Stars Shine Bright over a lace-trimmed heart-print dress from Innocent World. She’s also wearing Dr. Martens Mary Jane shoes with cute black tights embroidered with white bows and flowers. Her black reptile-pattern purse with a large gold logo is from Vivienne Westwood. Her Grimoire accessories include pearl drop earrings, two vintage necklaces and a black bow in her hair.

TROA: Insect-inspired Couture
Photo: Troa
Seoul-based journalist Michael Reyes is profiling some of today’s most notable Korean designers. Here’s the third installment.
Seasoned Korean designer Han Song’s inspiration for S/S 11 celebrates the organic beauty of insects, an unlikely yet delightfully enchanting specimen for heightening this designer’s intrigue. The skills he acquired of sketching and draping at Parsons in New York is reflected elegantly with special attention to the signature pieces in his collection: beetle wings, and voluminous silhouettes reminiscent of flying anthropods.
Exaggerated volume noticeably presented with skirts this season, also calls to mind butterfly wings, dramatically contrasted with slim tops and bold, colorful leggings that mimics the physique of the prettiest bug. Sheerness and layering enhances the theme; full skirts in translucent fabrics such as woven silk organza for instance being worn over pants distinctively maintain the flow with shirts in metallic, iridescent materials referencing intriguing exoskeletons inspired by cicadas. This imagery is meant to suggest the strong, and graceful beauty of the TROA woman.

A Fun Style & *Fashion Advice* Q&A with Mary Alice Haney, the Trendsetting EIC of ThisNext.com
When Google officially launched its shopping site Boutiques.com last week, they had women categorize themselves as edgy, romantic, Boho, or classic.
But really…who wants to be boxed into a single style?
Fortunately the fashion experts at THISNEXT.com get it. Their roster of tastemakers have worked with every flavor of fashion trendsetter – from Madonna to Blake Lively to SJP – and know, like Carrie Bradshaw & her posse, that “coloring” outside the lines is where the fun begins.
Jeremy Scott Adidas Track Suit. Not Just For Halloween!
I always wanted to wear an x-ray print! Kidding. No, actually I always wanted to wear my Halloween costume outside the Halloween trick or treat days. Especially the scary costumes!
Now I know my prayers were listened and I can finally have my wish granted if I choose this great track suit from Adidas and Jeremy Scott! Part of the fall-winter 2010 2011 collection, this skeleton track suit may just be the next big thing. What say you? (oh, ah, the price? It’s 5,11 for the top and ,92 for the pants. Nina Garcia Wants to Be Your ‘Stylist Fairy Godmother’

Though she’s best known for her roles as the fashion director of Marie Claire and judge on Project Runway, Nina Garcia is also the author of three books on style. Today, the Colombian-born fashion guru releases her fourth tome, Nina Garcia’s Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion, a 300-page guide to situational dressing illustrated by Ruben Toledo. The style advice ranges from common wardrobe dilemmas — job interviews, first dates, casual weddings — to super-specific events, like jury duty, an office Halloween party, or a Netflix night in with a guy. Now she wishes she’d had time to add another timely chapter: “What do you wear to rehab? What do you wear to go to trial?” she asks, laughing. “What if you’re Lindsay Lohan or Naomi Campbell?” We caught up with the multitasking (and pregnant!) editor to discuss her sartorial nightmares, favorite fast-fashion spots, and this season’s “fragile” Project Runway cast.
What prompted you to write your latest book?
Whenever I’m on a book tour, one of the questions I always get asked is what to wear to various occasions. I wanted to write a road map to situational dressing, almost like you had a stylist fairy godmother who says, “Oh, you’re going to your first job interview? You’re going to this wedding? Here, wear this.”
What’s the hardest situation to dress for?
Unfortunately, the trickier situations are always the more personal ones: when you have a date with a guy you really like or you have an interview for a job you really want. You get emotional and your judgment gets impaired. My nightmare of nightmares is being overdressed for a casual event — I’ve done it! You have to have a real sense of what you want to communicate.
