10-year-old Vogue model: Pretty or pretty weird? [Updated]
Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau is 10, but an issue of French Vogue, in which she wears heavy makeup, stilettos and a come-hither look has stirred up an adult-sized controversy.
The images of Thylane, which appeared in the magazine’s December/January issue but had been brought back into the spotlight in a “Good Morning America” segment on Thursday, are firing arguments about the sexualization of young girls. Some see it as part of an overall recent trend toward younger models. (Despite the fact that one may possibly argue that it is tough for a young girl to get a break, given all the fortysomething movie stars hogging covers these days.)
Still, two young film stars have recently gone the modeling route: Elle Fanning, at 13, is the star of the Marc by Marc Jacobs fall campaign, and 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld, the wholesome-seeking star of “True Grit,” signed a deal with Miu Miu. Actresses Katherine Heigl, Amanda Seyfried and Lindsay Lohan also began their careers as young models. And just this week Kardashian sibling Kendall Jenner, 15, landed a swimsuit modeling contract.
10-Year-Old Vogue Model Controversy Reignited

Models are a steady incendiary topic in the fashion business and have been for some time now victims of excessive Photoshop doctoring, the alleged cause of consuming disorders for malleable teens, and now there’s one more bugbear – painfully young models. And one in specific who graced a current concern of French Vogue in all-out editorial – little Thylane Lena-Rose Blondeau (remember?) mastered that default sultry gaze of accomplished models, whilst posing in what can only be perceived as a state of seductiveness. It’s a disturbing image if I ever did see one, and is not faring properly with the bulk of angry mob-like press who have re-sparked the debate following Great Morning America took a glance back at the shoot and explored ‘How young is too young?’ yesterday.
Thylane was compared to sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning posing for the Marc Jacobs label, but it was pointed out that they are technically adolescents although Thylane is a child. According to International Company Times, the problem has gone as far as to invoke some legal action around these here parts. The UK Government is making noises with regard to an initiative enforcing restrictions on the sexualisation of young children in the media.
