Newsstand Report: Sales Down Across the Board, Elle Plumets 18%, and Kardashians Still Sell
2011 did not end on a good note for magazines. According to Audit Bureau of Circulations, the industry was down an average of 10 percent, WWD is reporting.
And that’s not even the worst of it. Some fashion titles fell much harder. Allure, for instance, was down 13.3 percent to 130,901, while InStyle, despite the highest single-copy average during the period, showed a 14.2 percent decrease over the prior year. Elle fared the worst, with an 18.3 percent drop in newsstand.
Other glossies didn’t get hit quite so hard, but the picture is still bleak. WWD reports:
WIN! Fashion Fabulous London – the ultimate shopping guide

We had been super-excited when a copy of Fashion Fabulous London 2012 hit our desk. This guidebook with added style is an encylopaedia of where to shop for fashion and accessories in London.
Even long-term London residents will come across some new gems amongst the hundreds of shops listed, from designer names to high street favourites, large malls to tiny boutiques. Each one is extensively reviewed and rated for wow factor, choice, service and cost, with specifics on sizing, genre (classic, glam, cool, urban and so on) and a lot more.
The book (£12.99) is written by Tracy Rose and Russell Rose, who are stalwarts of the London Fashion scene. Tracy is a famous face at Fashion Week and Royal Ascot thanks to her amazing hats, and both are hugely knowledgable when it comes to shopping in our fair city. Rest assured they’ve left no stone unturned in their hunt for London’s ideal shopping spots, from Chanel boutiques to charity shops!
Kate Middleton is Beauty Icon of the Year
Her fashion alternatives more than the past year have sparked sell outs, copies and a million columns attempting to decode precisely why she picked that certain shift dress to go with that specific pair of nude court shoes – but apparently Kate Middleton‘s beauty options have impressed you nearly as much – the new royal has been named Beauty Icon of the Year in a poll conducted by Superdrug.
Clearly we’re not the only ones who’ve turn out to be entranced with the Duchess of Cambridge‘s perfectly blow dried, flowing, glossy brown mane of hair – but the voters had been naturally impressed with Kate’s trademark minimal (some may well say boring) make up routine of black eyeliner and blush too.
Hair aside although, I doubt I would have picked Kate as my beauty icon of the year – I’m confident she’s really good, but she does not set me alight with inspiration. I most likely would have gone for Kristen Stewart, just for sheer improvement (this year she in fact styled her hair and learnt to smile!).
Rodarte Curate A Magazine Featuring Elle Fanning – and Dress Rooney Mara!

As if Rodarte sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy weren’t busy sufficient (New York Fashion Week is less than two months away, men and women!), they’ve teamed up with biannual Belgian publication, A MAGAZINE, to curate an entire concern full of pure unadulterated Rodarte-ness! They’re following in the footsteps of other fashion designer-turned-curators like Proenza Schouler, Riccardo Tisci and Giambattista Valli who have stepped up to the magazine’s mantle for previous issues.

The magazine is inspired by their home state of California (as are a lot of of their collections), with every little thing from Santa Cruz’s well-known beaches to grizzly bears, and all of their favourite men and women and snippets of Cali history. It’s brimming with photography, art, individual stories and evocative shoots – two of which we’re rather excited about. A-list Rodarte super-fans Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning have stepped in as the models! Naturally, the girls are modelling some of the finest Rodarte pieces available – couture S/S’12 for Miss Fanning (a collection that has now been gifted to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) and a extremely snuggly ‘Amish’ quilt motif sweater from A/W’11 for Dunst.
Manolo Blahnik didn’t know who Suri Cruise was!

Adorable Alert! We’ve just watched this brilliant video interview of Manolo Blahnik, with Amy Odell of NYMag’s The Cut blog. (We wondered what she looked like and now we know). She went into Manolo’s New York boutique on 54th street where Manolo was signing copies of his book The Elves and the Shoemaker, which Amy describes as ‘a lovely little stocking stuffer for well-formed shoe addicts and shoe addicts in training’
We know from our colleagues who’ve had the privilege of meeting the great man that he is something of a charmer, and when we watched the video footage, we were not disappointed. But he’s also pretty hilarious and we particularly loved his non-verbal exclamations. When asked what he thought of big platform shoes that have so fashionable lately, he said ‘well, some of my own shoes are vulgar. . .but not as vulgar as . . .’ before making an indescribable exhalation of air combined with eyebrow moves. Love it!
Manolo Blahnik Is Still Trying to Create the Perfect Shoe

Last night I stopped by Manolo Blahnik‘s 54th Street boutique where the shoe designer was on hand with author Camilla Morton to sign copies of their new book, Manolo Blahnik and the Tale of the Elves & the Shoemaker (Morton wrote it, Blahnik did the illustrations). I only had four minutes to talk to the man whose creations threatened to send Sex and the City‘s Carrie Bradshaw into debt, as the crowd of extremely posh Blahnik-shod women waiting to have the master sign their shoes and books was growing larger by the second.
It makes sense that Morton chose to create a fairy tale of Blahnik’s life since it seems to have played out that way. “Everything in my life is an accident,” he says, downplaying his talent and intense work ethic that has led to his 39-years long successful career. And as the protagonist of a fairy tale, Blahnik–whimsical, witty and utterly charming–fits the bill.
Here’s how my four minutes with Manolo Blahnik played out.

PARIS, France — Last April, a journalist from French daily newspaper Le Figaro asked Frederic Lefebvre, French Secretary of State for Trade, to name his favourite book. His answer: “Without doubt Zadig and Voltaire, it is a lesson in life, I dip into it often.”
