Real-Life Style Challenge: Borrowing from the Boys
This week’s Actual-Life Style Challenge is inspired by our pals of the opposite sex. Menswear-inspired style for females has been generating the rounds at fashion week for a lot of seasons now. We’ve covered the menswear trend here ahead of, but this week I’m taking the look to the streets and testing it for real.
The Challenge:
This week’s challenge is to style a week’s worth of outfits featuring menswear-inspired pieces, (or items that have historically been related far more with menswear than womenswear) which includes boy blazers, oxford shoes, and button-down shirts. Prepared to see how it goes? Read on!

Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by The Lord of the Rings

Considering that I write the Geek Chic column right here at CF, it should come as no surprise that I obsess over a lot of sci-fi/fantasy series. Of all these, though, it’s The Lord of the Rings that will often be my…precious… and the one tale to rule them all.
J.R.R. Tolkien’s story of nine unlikely allies and their epic quest to save Middle-earth is beloved by millions and has been adapted several occasions. Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed film adaptations starred Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortenson, Sean Bean, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, and Sir Ian McKellen as the Fellowship of the Ring and won a total of 17 Academy Awards. (The Return of the King won all of its 11 nominations and was the 1st and only fantasy movie ever to win Finest Picture!)

Fall’s Fresh Crop of Corduroy Pants

Corduroy may not have the best rep—the fabric’s known more for its durability than its flattering fit. But that hasn’t stopped brands from trying to glam it up since the 1700s, when they tried to rename it “corde du roi,” or “cord of the king”. Nevertheless, the waled material has continuously fallen in and out of style. In 1982 Gianni Versace dedicated his entire menswear line to corduroy back in 1982, but other than that its popularity falls largely on the shoulders of college professors and Jerry Garcia. Until now, at least. This fall, designers took a stab at not only reinventing the material, but the way in which it’s—classic bell bottoms, skinnies, trousers, and even leggings. Olivier Theyskens‘ low slung version for Theory’s our favorite, but here are a few others to get you excited about the traditionally not-so-thrilling material.
Gap 1969 Skinny Bootcut Corduroy Pants. Classic bootcut cords scream fall anyway, but add harvest colors like dried berry and pumpkin orange and you’re set through December.
Theyskens’ Theory Pepper Pant. When choosing a super flared corduroy pant, you might want to stick to a basic shade.
Spring racing fashion: what to wear
When spring racing carnival hits Melbourne its debatable which gets more attention: the races themselves, or the fashions that go on display trackside. It’s hard not to get swept away in the racing fever of hats and heels and horses – and when you do, you’ll want to know what to wear to truly stand out.
So here are our tips for both guys and girls of how to make an on-trend statement while you’re fervently waving that race card in the air and cheering on your equine bet.

Introduction
A few weeks back a reader asked me for help on creating shorts and footwear combinations for his outfits. Although this is something a lot of you might do without much thought, it can be tricky to get right; you need to be aware of how your outfit is proportioned and your footwear becomes even more obvious when you do not have a longer trouser hem to connect them with your outfit.
Although this article is not very timely, I am actually about to take a well earned summer holiday next week so I have been thinking about this myself a lot recently. I am hoping some of you will also be in the same position as myself and looking forward to a late summer holiday, or we as a nation still have some late sunshine left in this so called “summer” season.
