Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by The Hunger Games

By now, you’ve probably heard the buzz surrounding Suzanne Collins’s popular young adult trilogy The Hunger Games. With the first movie adaptation coming out in a little over two weeks (March 23rd!), it’s prime time for a Geek Chic post about fashion inspired by Panem!
The Hunger Games is an addictive blend of dystopian horror novel, action thriller, makeover show, star-crossed romance, and Project Runway. For a YA book, it’s surprisingly heavy stuff, with a ton of graphic violence and implied social commentary. The movie adaptation stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth as romantic triangle members Katniss, Peeta, and Gale.

Ruby Aldridge’s Eye Makeup Tutorial
Photo: Getty Images
“It’s all about the eyes,” said MAC makeup guru Charlotte Tilbury backstage at Cushnie et Ochs. To complement the sexy vibe of the collection, Tilbury chose smoldering black and brown cream shadows and brown kohl eyeliner. “I used silver on the inner corner just to open the eyes a bit,” she adds. “Besides being sensual, the collection is also futuristic—opening the eye with a futuristic metallic felt right.” To complete the look, Tilbury filled in brows “for strength and definition.”
The enhanced arches are something model Ruby Aldridge says she normally lacks: “I’m begging the eyebrow god for thicker brows!” she says. “Mine are so thin. It’s funny—you always want what you don’t have.”
The eye makeup at Cushnie et Ochs, however, is a part of Aldridge’s usual routine. “I like wearing smoky, smudgy black and brown liner,” she says. “I love Stila Smudge Pots. I’ll dip my ring finger in one of those—the ring finger is the gentlest—and pat it on my upper eyelid, down near the lash line. Then I just blend it up and out into the crease.”

It’s here! Urban Decay Naked2 palette hits Debenhams

Urban Decay’s Naked palette was the brand’s bestselling eyeshadow palette ever, and continued to sell out every single time it was restocked for most of last year. Containing a selection of non-boring neutrals that are ideal for creating almost everything from gilded lids to a deep brown smoky eye, it is the ultimate ‘does it all’ eyeshadow kit for any eye colour.
Now Urban Decay are back with Naked2, the sister palette, which contains 12 a lot more neutral shadows. Obviously there’s only so significantly you can do with browns, beiges, golds and greys, so a lot of the colours are really similar to the original palette, though there are few much more greyish taupes and fewer shimmering golds this time about, plus a quite matte black for a genuine touch of smoke.
It launches nationwide in the UK on 4th February, but Debenhams have an exclusive pre-launch so you can order it now for £36.
