Steven Charles & Akikazu Iwamoto’s Dual Exhibition Hits NYC
Untitled #9, Akikazu Iwamoto. Photo: Stux Gallery
Akikazu Iwamoto is only 38 years old. However developing up in Hiroshima, even decades immediately after Globe War II, the artist was profoundly affected by the atomic bomb. “It was everywhere,” he says by way of an interpreter at the opening of his Stux Gallery show in New York City. “You would see men and women walking about with melted flesh. My pediatrician had lost his hand.” His grandmother, who raised the young Iwamoto immediately after his parents died, lived two miles from the bomb web site and witnessed it initial-hand.
These images of human suffering and devastation continue to haunt Iwamoto, and they seep into his art—candy-colored, garish illustrations featuring hybrid animals gleefully, occasionally unknowingly, destroying 1 yet another. One colored-pencil drawing at the Stux show, which runs via June 30, attributes an young girl in a blue dress, a halo more than her head, with an massive bunch of dynamite strapped to her back, its fuse sprouting brilliant red sparks. (Underlining the duality of this self-destructive angel, the fuse looks like a devil’s tail.) In yet another, a man—or is he a slug?—washes dishes in a derelict rat-infested kitchen, his skin melting into a train behind him. What’s most disturbing about Iwamoto’s drawings and paintings, nonetheless, is that there’s a sort of manic joy to them: a rebellious, anarchic freedom that is as enticing as it is repugnant. “It is heavy and sad, but there’s hope too,” says Iwamoto. Chalk that up to the birth of his daughter, who just turned three years old. “She gave me a lot of hope for the future.”
If Iwamoto’s operate is inextricably tied to his relationships—to his hometown, to his family, to his heritage—Steven Charles’s is about the freedom from those ties. “I’m a quite selfish person,” says the 45-year-old artist, whose abstract paintings are also at Stux. “I’m not married, I do not have youngsters, and I in no way will. I just want to paint!”

Tom Ford’s Life and Career, In His Own Words
Even if you feel you know the history–or myth, in some cases–of Tom Ford’s style profession, it is a distinctive expertise to be able to hear it told in the 1st individual, by the man himself. We got to knowledge it Tuesday night at the 92nd Street Y for the latest “Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis” along with a stylish group of vente-privee members (that’s right, the fabulous member-only shopping site with brands like Wolford, Cavalli and Miraval Spa also supplied VIP access to this incredible evening – have you signed up for your trip to Paris but?) The space was packed and the 92nd Street Y even opened up a room for people to listen to a reside simulcast the only other individual the Y has accomplished that for was Woody Allen. We were rapt listening to him chat with Fern for an hour and a half about his childhood, his extended and influential stint with the Gucci Group, and his future projects (like carrying out three films someday).
Tom Ford famously–and it appears incongruously–grew up in Austin, TX and Santa Fe, NM and it resonates with and influences him still. His childhood seemed idyllic, and he counts a grandmother–who was married six times and insisted on going by the name “Duckie” simply because she didn’t want to be referred to as “Grandmother”–as a enormous influence. Ford stated, “She jingled and smelled very good.” In spite of a self-described pleased childhood, he acknowledges that being different in the Texas school he attended was not celebrated. He experienced bullying for items like carrying a briefcase, but his parents continued to encourage him to do it, for which he was naturally grateful.
He went to NYU as an undergrad, but dropped out right after a year. “Um, I was going to Studio 54 lot,” he stated by way of explanation. In the meantime, he embarked on a short-lived acting career about which he said (totally tongue-in-cheek), “I didn’t want to be an actor. I wanted to be a movie star!” He ultimately attended Parsons , exactly where he ended up with a degree in environmental design–not fashion style, and spent some time interning in Paris. But his ballsiness landed him a job in style following he hounded designer Cathy Hardwick until she agreed to see his sketches. Ford stated, “She stated [she hired me] due to the fact I had pretty hands.” He fundamentally learned on-the-job, and told a story about being asked to draw some circle skirts. He ran down to Bloomingdale’s, looked at the seams of some skirts, then ran back to the workplace to sketch.
