When Hollywood and the White House Collide
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which took spot Saturday night in DC, often makes for an fascinating red carpet. The event is a strange mix of politicians, New York’s media power players, and celebrities from the A list on down to the D list. We’re speaking President Obama and Kim Kardashian in the same area (“Why is she famous anyway?” Obama joked during his speech). And that makes for some quite fascinating fashion.
Take a look. And watch President Obama’s hilarious speech very first. He’s so excellent.

The only thing greater than a star-packed front row is a single with a random mix, as it’s 1 of the few instances you get to see celebrities—ones you’d in no way ever anticipate to see in the same place—forced to socialize. It turns out that all of the factors that make sitting subsequent to a stranger a pain for normal people—from awkward introductions to forced chit-chat—apply to the wealthy and famous, too. Feel Kim Kardashian and Rachel Roy generating tiny speak at Vera Wang, or Leigh Lezark shifting uncomfortably subsequent to Lindsay Lohan at Cynthia Rowley, as was the case last September.
BCBG Max Azria, the initial official show of Fashion Week, keeps the tradition alive this season. The front row had no shortage of huge names, but you got the feeling that most had been meeting for the 1st time. Giada DeLaurentis, identified greater for what she whips up in the kitchen than in the closet, was wedged amongst Tv personality Jeannie Mai and Added co-host Maria Menounos. To their right was Jane By Design’s Erica Dasher (all front rows require an up-and-coming ingénue), whilst to their left was Erin Wasson, who gamely smiled when her legs became Cory Kennedy’s armrest. Model Jessica White, seated on the other side of Wasson, seemed to hide behind her wide-brimmed hat whenever photographers zoomed in on the trio.
Arbitrary? Yes. But there may possibly have been some thing behind it: the clothing. The fall ’12 collection was all about uniting pieces that don’t seem to go together, and but somehow operate. “An artful proposition: harmoniously synthesize shape and color in new elongated proportions, fusing form and function,” explained the press notes. If ever there was a front row equivalent to pairing floaty chiffon dresses paired with heavy patchwork furs, this was it.

Reality Stars: Now On Newsstands

Now that reality stars have taken over TV, it was only a matter of time before they tackled publishing, too. Reality Weekly, a gossip magazine devoted to everything from teen moms to real housewives to Food Network hosts, made its newsstand debut this past week, reports WWD. That Kim Kardashian landed on the inaugural cover should be no surprise to anyone with a pulse; although she’s not the first famous-for-being-famous celebrity reality TV has made, she’s certainly the most high profile (in 2010 alone she and her clan raked in $ 65 million).
Among the other headline-garnering “stars” are Sandra Lee, Kendra Wilkinson, former The Bachelorette contestants, and Simon Cowell, who recently tweeted, “Got copy of new magazine Reality Weekly, very good idea!”
But don’t take this to be some sort of literary coup—after all, Reality Weekly is published by American Media Inc., the same company behind such high culture reads as Star, OK!, and the National Enquirer. At $ 1.79 an issue, it’s practically wearing its lowbrow heart on its sleeve. If the success of shows like Jersey Shore and Wife Swap (now back with a celebrity edition—so meta) are any indication, however, it shouldn’t even matter.
Cathy Horyn’s Year-End Fashion Roundup: Here’s What She Loved (McQueen) and Wants to Forget (Kim Kardashian and the Roaring 20s)

This is the time for year-finish lists and reflection, and when it comes to fashion, we constantly appear forward to what Cathy Horyn has to say. The Times published a slideshow today of what Horyn has deemed the top fashion moments of 2011 (check out our own list here) and believe it or not, she didn’t like almost everything.
Her leading ten list, in which she gives her take on what she felt were the biggest fashion moments and events of the year, includes the Alexander McQueen Met exhibit, Sarah Burton’s royal wedding designs, John Galliano’s fall from grace, as properly as some much less obvious options such as a dress Giovanna Battaglia wore to Cannes, Olivier Theyskens’ good results at Theory and, weirdly, Pop Phones: landline-style handsets that you attach to your cell telephone with a cord. Apparently they’re a factor and editors had been employing them in the front rows? She also nails into the redundancy of 1920s-inspired clothes on the spring runways, justifiably praising Prada and Balenciaga for going against the grain:
Whaaa? Alexa Chung, Kylie Minogue, Jessica Chastain AND Kris Jenner in the Same Emilio Pucci Dress!
We love a good fash-off here at Grazia HQ, especially when it involves our favourite style-setters – and, err, a style-setter’s mum. Let us explain.

For Exhibit A, we return to last Tuesday when the resplendent Alexa Chung was schmoozing at the Emilio Pucci Boutique launch in New York City. What a pretty dress she’s wearing, we mused at the time. Knee-length, slim-fitting and with a corseted bodice plus Peter Pan collar tied with ribbon, it’s a more ladylike look than we’re used to from our favourite Hipster Queen. Otherwise, so far, so normal, right? Little did we know that before long, we’d be seeing the dress again…
