Rockabilly hair: onwards and upwards
If style pundits were in any doubt as to the status of the rockabilly hair revival that has been gradually gaining momentum over the last two years, then the display of 1930s through 1950s-inspired retro hair at the menswear fashion shows over the past few years was the final proof they needed. Designers including the likes of Jil Sander and Thomas Maier at Bottega Veneta sent out model after model sporting playful quiffs accessorised with rockabilly string ties and greaser gear. The message was undeniable: rockabilly – specifically rockabilly hair – was back. And it remained the key vintage-revival, attitude laden hairstyle of 2010 and 2011.
2012′s fashion is here, however, and with it the status of rockabilly hair changes. But that’s not to say it’s out altogether. Anything but. In fact, with the 1950s having an influence upon spring 2012′s fashion this is one hairstyle that has ended up with relevance to both men and women and we can comfortably add it to the list of men’s 2012 hairstyles as well as women’s 2012 hairstyles.
If you’ve already taken a look at our 2012 men’s hair guide, you’ll know that the quiff hairstyle has made its comeback. As far as hairstyles go, however, the quiff and the rockabilly seem to have a number of shared attributes. What’s the distinction, then?

Krysten Ritter Misses Shoulder Pads
The poster for Killing Bono, which opens today.
Killing Bono—the movie based on Neil McCormick’s memoir, Killing Bono: I Am Bono’s Doppelganger—covers U2′s first ten years, up until the release of The Joshua Tree album. The movie plays like a comedy of errors, chronicling how Neil and his brother Ivan repeatedly miss the mark while their childhood friends Paul Hewson and David Evans—you may know them as Bono and The Edge—find world-wide fame.
The movie, which hits US theaters today, stars Krysten Ritter as Neil’s love interest (who also happens to be the brothers’ manager, Gloria). We wanted to know what it was like to play a girl in such a boy’s world, so we caught up with Ritter to get her take on the legendary Irish band and talk about her own rock star ambitions.
ELLE: What was your first U2 moment?
KR: I was eighteen-years-old. I was dating a musician and he taught me how to play the rift from “Gloria” on guitar. That was a great introduction to U2—coincidentally, my character’s name is Gloria in the film.

For Spring 2011, the Fashion Color Palette Takes an Inspired Journey of Exotic Hues
For almost two decades, color authority Pantone has surveyed the designers at New York Fashion Week about their top color picks & trends. Spring 2011 found them packing their (design) bags for exotic locales including Africa, India, Peru, and Turkey. “The colors designers have chosen for the spring season present an interesting marriage of unexpected warm and cool tones,” notes Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report for Spring 2011 about the intriguing color combos that could transport any shopper eager for a bit of escapism from the daily grind straight to fabulous foreign lands. “By cleverly combining complementary colors, those that are opposites on the color wheel, they have created a striking intensity to the palette. These unique color combinations make it possible for consumers to pair existing pieces in colors traditionally associated with fall, with new favorites to punch up springtime wardrobes.”
Colleen Sherin, Fashion Director for Saks Fifth Avenue agrees. "It is clear that the colors, textiles and cultures of India and Africa are inspiring many designers. Earth tones, Khakis and Olives, in addition to complementary Vegetable and Berry tones, should be key." For Ken Dowling of Neiman Marcus (Fashion Director), the deep pinks, hot corals, and brilliant blues herald a return to a more carefree time: "The exotic locales of Marrakech and Morocco that inspired the bohemian influences of Yves Saint Laurent in the '70s." And while Essie Weingarten, Founder of Essie Cosmetics is seeing an "inevitable" return to a historic center of style – "fashion, design, literature – you name it…we are seeing Parisian sensibility in everything right now (including their own Spring 2011 nail color collection), for the Costume Designer of "Desperate Housewives," it's less a physical location than a state of mind. "It isn't a place that you can go to. Or come from. Or even be in," explains Cate Adair. "Rather, it's a place that is deep inside each and every person, a place that provides the pulse of our time – the human heart. For where the heart is, there is hope, And in today's difficult world, hope more than ever is the fuel we must burn to carry on. And more than any city or landscape or physical surroundings could do, hope still moves us to create beautiful things, even in the face of adversity."
