Chanel’s Resident Surfer

112 Chanel’s Resident Surfer

Photo: Chanel

When pro surfer Danny Fuller 1st learned he was the star of Chanel’s new Allure Homme Sport campaign, he was “blown away.” But such a high-profile gig is not all that surprising for the 30-year-old athlete, model, and photographer who’s already been featured in the pages of GQ and ELLE.

Fuller 1st came onto the scene on The WB’s The Boarding Residence, a pre-Jersey Shore reality Tv show exactly where seven pro surfers had been shacked up together for six weeks. Immediately after that, when his blond hair and hazel eyed mug catapulted far beyond the surfing realm, he initially struggled to locate a balance in between surfing and style. “There was a time when I put all fashion opportunities aside and just focused on my surfing career,” he told ELLE.

But the surfer never ever gave up on the camera completely. He started taking pictures to document his travels, and now, he’s been featured in photography exhibitions all more than the globe, most recently at the Brucennial in New York’s Greenwich Village. Intriguingly, Fuller actively tries to separate his surfing life from his art, even going so far as to adopt diverse names for each profession: “Danny Fuller” for surfing and “Daniel Fuller” for photography. “I do not want to be riding the coattail of, ‘Oh, the pro surfer that does art,’” Fuller mentioned. “That’s just lame.”

Since Brad Pitt’s the New Face of Chanel, Here are Other Famous Dudes in Fashion Ads

Since Brad Pitt’s the New Face of Chanel, Here are Other Famous Dudes in Fashion AdsChanel announced today that Brad Pitt would be the new face of Chanel No. 5–making him the initial ever male spokesperson for the iconic fragrance. That got us thinking: Could other storied brands go the very same route as Chanel? Will we be seeing much more handsome male faces in some of our favorite female-targeted campaigns?

If that is the situation, supermodel Coco Rocha is not going to be pleased. She tweeted earlier right now: “No working model is content for Brad Pitt and his new gig as the `face’ of Chanel No. 5.#ThingsBitterModelsSay Cc: @Models@StyleWatchMag.” Ouch. No doubt, Rocha would have leapt at the opportunity to represent the brand, whose eponymous designer she shares a 1st name with.

But while we highly doubt models like Rocha will get edged out by major male actors, we couldn’t resist the likelihood to re-cast some of our favorite ads–with a small far more testosterone this time.

Escape Artists

Hermes Sized Escape Artists You’re lying on a beach, eyes closed. There’s a tang of salt in the air, a whiff of some tropical bloom. There’s the sand, which smells distinct and nothing like soil the breeze, thick with ozone (a word, incidentally, which comes from the Greek ozein, meaning “to smell”). This is the scent of relaxation, of vacation, of the specific stretch of beach on which you’ve chosen to location your towel—and if you ever encounter that combination of fragrances once more, you will most likely be instantly transported back, even if you are in an Idaho snowstorm.

This is the phenomenon which inspires perfumers to spike their fragrances with certain notes, regardless of whether it be the watermelon in Lily Pulitzer’s Palm Beach inspired Beachy or the hibiscus and passion flower in Michael Kors’ Bermuda: They are trying conjure a particular place, and take us there. “As a kid my family members would invest summers in Hawaii,” says Gaye Straza Rappaport, founder of Kai fragrance, a white floral bouquet characterized by a powerful hit of intoxicating gardenia. “There’s nothing like the scent of exotic flowers, and plumeria, pikake, gardenia, and jasmine seemed to grow everywhere. Each time I smell 1 of those flowers I’m instantly back on the islands surrounded by loved ones.” Perfume is like a time portal—one whiff of Chanel No. five, for example, and you are a kid at your mother’s vanity table—and a sort of teleportation mechanism to locations you’ve visited all through your life, thanks to straightforward biology: The portion of the brain that recognizes and processes odors is appropriate next to the region that stores our memories. It is like a small switch gets thrown among the two and a door is flung open what our nose knows is the key.

Everybody has a robust scent memory—not all of them bottle-able: 1 of my ELLE colleagues is reminded of holidays not by tropical delights, but by the oaky scent of wood smoke (she’s a mountain cabin fan) I get Lutens Sized1 Escape Artists such a robust sense of London every time I catch a whiff of a particular asphalt-and-diesel-fuel combo that I’m practically standing in front of Big Ben for a few seconds like I’ve accomplished a quantum leap. But, thankfully, the most potent instant-vacation scent I’ve ever encountered is a, pleasant, and b, one that I can enjoy at home: Tahitian monoï.

Sunday Girl on her Unique Style plus WIN VIP Tickets to the Firetrap Launch Party!

sunday girl firetrap Sunday Girl on her Unique Style plus WIN VIP Tickets to the Firetrap Launch Party!

If there’s one thing we love here at Grazia Daily, it’s watching a style icon in the making. And the latest lady to catch our eye is Sunday Girl, aka Jade Williams, who became a permanent fixture at this month’s London Fashion Week. Matthew Williamson, Topshop Unique, Burberry and Mulberry; Jade bagged FROW tickets to them all. As we watched her from across the catwalk — in a non-stalkerish way, honest — we couldn’t ignore her boy-meets-girl wardrobe, polished off with lashings of ombre hair. So with SG’s latest collection for Firetrap landing this month, we were first in line to bag a piece of her sartorial spark.

The limited edition range is available now from www.firetrap.com and includes 16 staples, from leather jackets and jersey pieces to edgy accessories that are gorgeous enough to wear ANY day of the week (chortle). We’re already excited to give our new printed shirt an outing at the collection’s launch party later this month — scroll down to WIN FbySG pieces for yourself and tickets to join us at the swanky do, BTW. In the meantime, Grazia Daily has taken the opportunity to grill Ms Williams on her obsession with insects, mannish accents and Karl Lagerfeld’s twee gloves…

CQ’s Guide to Fashion’s Night Out NYC

FNO graphic CQs Guide to Fashions Night Out NYCLooks like the UK team will be super busy completing their London Fashion’s Night Out schedule, and I’ve recruited Zara to help me out here in the states. New York is serious about Fashion’s Night Out. I had the opportunity to be there for the first event, and it was more crowded than Christmastime on the streets, pure madness in the stores. It seemed designers and celebrities had appearances on every corner, and it’s only gotten bigger since. How do you decide what to do when the invites start piling up? Here’s some of my priorities.

4:00 p.m.: Head over to The Body Shop on Broadway to get “Runway Ready” with a celebrity makeup artist and check out The Body Shop makeup line for Kiss and Makeup. The press get in a little early but you can start booking appointments from 6 – 9 p.m., call 212-979-2944.

5:00 p.m.: Next, up, hair! Frederick Fekkai is hosting a Fashion’s Night Out Pre-Party for “A Fekkai Night Out” pampering services. This event is just for press, but don’t worry, Fekkai stylists will be on hand at Christian Louboutin boutiques to create glamorous evening coiffures from 6 – 11 p.m. at the Horatio Street, New York and West Hollywood and Dallas Christian Louboutin boutiques. The Frederic Fekkai salon at Saks Fifth Avenue will host a personal appearance by Frederic Fekkai unveiling the Hair by Fekkai – Life by You cinematic campaign from 6 – 8 p.m.

Someone a bit far more familiar with getting the face of a brand is Rosie-Huntington Whiteley, who is appearing in ads for Burberry’s new fragrance range, appropriately known as Burberry Body. In the campaign video, the former Victoria’s Secret Angel flaunts her body (natch) wearing nothing much more than an iconic Burberry trench. [Telegraph]

Gaspard Ulliel Hesitated Over Chanel Deal

gasper Gaspard Ulliel Hesitated Over Chanel Deal

Most who land a deal with a luxury fashion player grab it with both hands. French actor Gaspard Ulliel, even so, had to sleep on it. The dapper monsieur, most notable for playing Hannibal Lecter in the fifth film of the series, spoke to Vogue about his reservations as the face of the Bleu de Chanel fragrance campaign. He explained “I’m not like Brad Pitt or Gerard Depardieu, who already have established themselves as actors – I’m just starting. I didn’t want to be recognized as a Chanel model, over an actor.” But soon enough, he regarded it as “the perfect project” and accepted the gig offered from a Couture Residence rooted in his native Paris (thank god for that). Bleu de Chanel for males is now available and is largely described as woody and aromatic.
