Interviews with Fashion Insiders: Editorial Assistant Christina Garofalo

magazines Interviews with Fashion Insiders: Editorial Assistant Christina Garofalo

For the second interview in the Interviews with Fashion Insiders series, I knew that Christina Garofalo, who is an Editorial Assistant at Robb Report Magazine, would be the ideal pick.

From styling photo shoots to editing articles, Christina’s job brings a thing new – and fascinating – each and every day. And like our very first interview topic Chrissy Sheahan, Christina also did not study fashion in college – additional proof that style school is not a necessity in this organization! So with out further ado, here are some tips and stories from a correct fashion insider.

London Designer Miss Jacqueline White Presents . . .DAZZLE!

1 Miss Jacqueline White DAZ London Designer Miss Jacqueline White Presents . . .DAZZLE!

Last night the East London crowd assembled itself into a tucked-away art gallery space – the Protein Gallery near Great Eastern Street – had a drink and prepared to witness an amazing explosion of fashion/art/performance: Miss Jacqueline White’s latest collection, Dazzle.

The room was already prepped to give the collected fashionistas a clue of what was to come, with graphic black and white stripes, geometric shapes and waitresses dressed in black and white chevron striped catsuits serving drinks. Hmm, what could the theme possibly be?

Kanye West defends his Paris Fashion Week collection in an angry rant!

Although it’s an absolute cliché, we’re going to say it. Kanye West has had a rant. In a speech he made at his Paris Fashion Week after party, he went into great detail about the back story, the whys, hows the wherefores of the background to its creation as well as painting a picture of who were the heroes and villains of the piece.

Firstly he addressed the haters, saying; ‘Thank you for anybody that didn’t believe, because they motivated us to break our boundaries … we don’t know what the reviews will be, we don’t know what they will say, but I got a chance to go to Italy and feel those fabrics.’

Fashion Muse of the Moment: Nobuyoshi Araki

Fashion Muse of the Moment: Nobuyoshi Araki

The edgy Tokyo-born photographer has published more than 350 books, and still more every year, making him one of the most prolific artists ever.  His work is erotic and typically involves lots of bondage, which has always made sense on a certain level: he is, after all, a product of the same culture from which emanated both the uber-glamorous art of kimono and the uber-kitschy world-takeover of Hello Kitty.

Japanese bondage, or kinbaku, originates from the medieval techniques used by samurai warriors to tie up their captives: safely, securely, and with great respect. The modern approach emphasizes not only that the ropes be “carefully used to arouse and pleasure the entrapped” but that they look aesthetically-pleasing against the body.

For Spring 2012, the Singapore-born, NYC-based Prabal Gurung found inspiration in Araki’s “Sensual Flowers” series, diverting the designer away from his well-trod, party-dress(ed) path; instead of expected red carpet flourishes, his newest collection includes fun touches like harnesses made from black leather and silk cord, decadent prints, hand-painted latex, and lots of peekaboo mesh. The French-based Aoi Kotsuhiroi created the amazing “Colorless Murder Feet Objects” (above) – one of a kind, bien sur – that feature leather straps which can be tied around the foot in different ways to reveal their beauty. “It was a rainy day in early summer,” recalls Kotsuhiroi. “Colorless birds had just arrived. Upstairs, in the confusion of departure, there were smiles which caressed a silence. Later, I went through things that had nothing to say. Thus, far from the fence of obligations, I decided to not return, to start listening to the wolves.”

Jaime King On Hot Pants & ‘Hart of Dixie’

New York fashion week may be nearing the end, but Hollywood’s just heating up. Every TV network is launching their September line-up which means, competing parties! Bing—the search engine out to overthrow Google—hosted a bash in honor of the CW’s new trifecta of female-driven dramas: The Ringer, The Secret Circle, and Hart of Dixie.

Delivering a bit of Dixieland’s southern comfort to attending Angelenos, there were bars solely dedicated to Mint Juleps and the rare photo-opt to pose with a living, breathing—hopefully sedated—alligator, but the highlight of the night came courtesy of the show’s co-stars—and offscreen friends—Rachel Bilson and Jaime King.

King, who plays the Southern Belle antithesis to Bilson’s Alexander Wang-wearing, New York transplant, gushed about her recent trip to New York for fashion week as as the influence she holds over her character’s wardrobe.

Peter (of Bjorn & John) Talks Gimme Some

The cover of Peter, Bjorn & John’s new album, Gimme Some.

Peter Bjorn and John are about to release their sixth album, Gimme Some, a back to basics collection of rock and punk infused tracks that make them a top contender for best album of the year. Given the trio’s now lengthy career, we peppered Peter Morén with questions about his first Lollapalooza festival, what he hopes listeners will do after listening to Gimme Some, and how he forgives over-zealous fans.

ELLE: What did you want to give your fans through Gimme Some?
PM: We wanted to do an album that was relatively short and without ballads, that would burst with energy and reflect more how we’ve always sounded live as a three-piece and that would bounce back to the roots of our first two unknown albums, but with the experience of being twelve years in a band as well. We wanted to sound younger than yesterday—I think we succeeded in all these respects.

ELLE: “Second Chance,” “Eyes,” and “Down Like Me” are great tracks. Is there one song on the album that’s most personal for you?
PM: I think we all have different favorites and they change and differ. But you picked three really good ones I think! “Eyes” and “Down Like Me” are maybe my favorites to play live. One of my personal favorites is definitively “May Seem Macabre.”  It has really absurd lyrics. It paints a couple of dreamlike pictures of a burial and the weird thing is it’s your own burial; so you have an out-of-body-experience. And it’s a positive experience because even though your friends and relatives are mourning you are being buried with your spouse. It’s like an indie-disco-version of “When the Saints,” trying to be positive about the inevitable fact that we’re all going to go someday. Which is hard ’cause I love life! I also love the beat and the guitars on that song.

Amazing Bodypainting. Acne Paper FW 2010 2011

I usually pay little attention to this kind of art. Of body art. However, the following image is downright amazing! Not just because it’s part of a magazine pictorial where every page, every model embodies a room of the house (this being the library), but because of its flawless realization.

The image appeared in Acne Paper Issue 11 Fall Winter 2010 2011 and it was executed by Phillis Cohen. Isn’t she something else? (you can check out more of her work here; via)
