Central Saint Martins MA show at London Fashion Week

Central Saint Martins’ MA show is one of the hottest tickets at London Fashion Week. This is the location to spot the subsequent generation of large names in the fashion industry. CSM’s alumni reads like a who’s who of fashion, with names like Christopher Kane, the late Alexander McQueen and Phoebe Philo creating up just a modest fraction of the talent to come through their doors.

As Louise Wilson celebrated 20 years of directing the MA course, some of her former students showed up to assistance this year’s graduates designers like Roksanda Illincic and Gareth Pugh had been in attendance, as nicely as the slightly unexpected arrival of Iain Duncan Smith!

Experimental doesn’t even begin to cut it for CSM. This is a likelihood for graduates to express their creativity prior to adhering to the constraints of the commercial fashion globe, so understandably they go all out with eye-catching, out there collections. This year did not disappoint with what folks dubbed ‘Balenciaga burkas’, boxy protrusions on ladylike dresses and incredible fringed shoes.

Central Saint Martins Fall 2012: The Most Memorable Looks

Central Saint Martins Fall 2012: The Most Memorable Looks

If you are going to see a student show, Central Saint Martins is the one to see, and this is the show that kicked off London fashion week for me. Louise Wilson, who according to the Telegraph, is in her 20th year as course director of the esteemed style school, sent 18 graduating MA fashion student collections down the catwalk.

CSM has churned out some of the greatest talent in British fashion (Alexander McQueen and Christopher Kane, among several other folks), so the student work is pretty celebrated–and scrutinized. But CSM alums Roksanda Ilincic and Gareth Pugh were there to assistance them, and so were a lot of proud family members members. In the finish almost 200 looks went down the runway, and boy, was it fun. ig

Marchesa Fall 2012: Coming to a Red Carpet (and Taylor Momsen Video) Near You

Marchesa Fall 2012: Coming to a Red Carpet (and Taylor Momsen Video) Near YouIt does not get much more glamorous than Marchesa‘s Fall 2012 show.

Set at the Plaza Hotel, guests initial had to make their way by means of the clump of paparazzi waiting on the red carpet for a peek at Taylor Momsen, Stacy Keibler and Olivia Palermo. It felt a lot more like an A-list awards show than a fashion show–which makes sense considering that we’re betting a lot more than a handful of of Marchesa’s gorgeous and dramatic gowns will make their way onto the red carpet soon–like Oscar’s soon.

When every person was seated in the gold dinner chairs in one of the Plaza’s most luxurious event spaces, the show began. Models entered through a gold-and-mirrored doorway, helped down the tiny set of steps by a pair of dapper gentlemen, like debutantes from a bygone era.

The line sheet mentioned the designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig were inspired by William-Adolphe Bouguereau’s famed 1878 portrait, “A Soul Brought to Heaven.” And as the New York Instances‘ Eric Wilson pointed out, there was some Alexander McQueen in there, too. In any case, there were numerous Baroque elements in the collection, and although the hand embroidered lace bodices, as nicely as the gold brocade sculptural frocks did remind us of McQueen’s Fall 2010 collection, they also seemed like a natural development for the brand’s aesthetic.

The Black Dresses From 2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet

Leading the black dresses pack was, undoubtedly, Emma Stone. It’s a subjective opinion, biensur, my fashperspective getting totally blindsided by Emma herself – I genuinely like her and particularly by the reality that she’s wearing Alexander McQueen. However, I can’t deny that Angelina Jolie comes in a dangerously close second position. But then again, she’s always amongst my favorites on any Red Carpet. And that’s surely not only because of her outfits.

However, considering that the black dresses were so nicely represented on the 2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet, I had to pick a very best from the rest, aside from my already mentioned weaknesses. And here I go, once again selecting two dresses: Stacy Keibler’s black lace Marchesa and Jayma Mays black sequined Reem Acra. (hit the jump to see the rest of the black dresses from the 2012 SAG Awards Red Carpet check out the gallery here)

A Fresh Take on the White Shirt

A Fresh Take on the White Shirt

What piques the interest of hot new fashion talent?  For some, it is the style path much less traveled. Veering away from the easy route – bling, novelty fabrics, out-there design – Central Saint Martins grads Levi Palmer &amp Matthew Harding discovered themselves attracted to the challenge of overhauling that staid wardrobe staple, the white shirt, and producing it fresh once again. Part of the cause was timing Harding graduated in 2010 in the depths of a deep recession. “Suddenly the notion of designing party dresses didn’t rather fit the mood,” the London native lately explained to Vogue (Feb. 2012). The duo looked to the past for inspiration, in particular the intricate pleating and hand finishing techniques of 30s couturiers like Madame Gres. With such a laser-like concentrate on unique details, the fact they limit their palette to a single garment tends to make sense as a distraction-totally free way of “highlighting the progressive beauty and craft of the garments.”

Just before launching palmer//harding at S/S 12 London Fashion Week, the pair was nominated for the prestigious ANDAM award 2011 in Paris. Their fledgling label is now sponsored by TOPSHOP’s NEWGEN program, which previously mentored Erdem, Christopher Kane &amp Alexander McQueen.

2012 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Black Dresses

The safe choice for evening wear, the queen of all dresses, the Little Black Dress (shorter or longer, simpler or more intricate) was a sure bet for the 2012 edition of the Golden Globe Awards.

Not as numerous as the white-ish, pale neutrals, soft gowns we talked about earlier, the black dresses were equally gorgeous, maybe even more interesting, fashion wise, than the rest. My favorite was, of course, Meryl Streep. A fashion winner, not just a Golden Globe winner! (she took home the Golden Globe for the Best Actress Award for her interpretation in the Iron Lady – once again, Anna Wintour picks the winners for Vogue’s cover) She’s wearing Alessandra Rich, and even if it was a bed sheet or table cloth or both, all I know is that it’s totally her, it suits her, it looks amazingly comfortable and she may wear whatever she pleases, she’ll still be the great Meryl Streep! (I realize I may be all alone in my corner while the entire world is casting fashion stones at Meryl’s dress choice for last night). The story continues right after the jump (you can click here for the gallery!)

You know, there’s something odd happening now – when I did that creamy story earlier, I had good and bad. Now (maybe it’s because of the amazingly good coffee I’m drinking right this moment) I can’t seem to find any flaws in the ranks of the black dresses wearers! Salma Hayek’s black Gucci with golden geometrical embroidery on the dresses’ corset is truly flattering on Salma’s body (notice her ombre hair? If Pinault’s lady has gradient hair, it’s a trend for sure!). And that Prada dress with green upper body that has taken over Zooey Deschanel’s usually quirky baby doll-ish style? It’s amazing! I loved her transformation!
