The First Social Media-Powered Shoes? Julian Louie Dishes on His Spring 2011 Collaboration with Aldo – Spawned by Joe Zee’s Twitter
Inspired by South African photographer Pieter Hugo’s photo-book about street performers known as the Hyena Men who haunt the peripheries of Nigeria’s cities – accompanied by hyenas, baboons & rock pythons – and earn a meagre living performing for crowds and selling traditional medicines, Julian Louie channeled “The Hyena & Other Men” into a tightly-edited collection of “found” athleticwear with an opulent African touch – including a satin silk skirt with betasseled curtain ties, a shirtdress in crepe de chine trimmed in haircloth, and THOSE shoes! Open-toed wedge ankle boots crafted with patchwork suede and cotton ikat tribal prints originally designed in collaboration with ALDO to walk the runway only.
Until Elle’s Joe Zee drafted his myriad twitter followers to beg the shoe company to change their mind. And they did!
Gwen Stefani’s Spring 2011 L.A.M.B. Collection

Not even a surprise tornado spiraling through NYC could affect the attendance at the Spring 2011 L.A.M.B. Show. This season Gwen Stefani packed the Theatre at Lincoln Center; the front row boasted the rest of her No Doubt band mates, Debbie Harry, Omarion, and hubby Gavin Rossdale who accessorized with their adorable son Kingston on his lap.
With the music of Jay-Z and Sean Paul pumping up the room, models inAfrican and Caribbean influenced pieces strutted fiercely down the runway. This collection reflected Stefani’s unique energy and aesthetic. From beautiful, tribal printed asymmetrical dresses, styled with trendy fedoras, to cropped mini skirts and blazers, the collection boasted an ecclectic mix. During the show, Rossdale was taking pictures of models sashaying in his wife’s designs, while Kingston stared very intensely as if studying the familiar style that echoed his mom’s.
The shoe was a fitting and exciting way to close out the inaugural season of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Lincoln Center. Stefani ended it on a high note! ~Ivana Cepeda
Super Cute Summer Dresses by Bahati in Cheery African Print Fabrics
"Africa is home to some of the worlds most dramatic and vast known art practices in the world each characterized by unique and amazing colour combinations, shapes and textures, dynamic designs and abstract arrangements," explains the enterprising Patricia Wakaimba, a 21 year old from Kenya who is currently a student at Kings College and designer of feminine, flirty frocks from African print fabrics for her line, Bahati. "Bahati encompasses all these elements and strives to be a truly vibrant modern day symbol of cultural expression."
She also has a mission: to raise awareness about the dreadful impact of Female Genital Mutilation. "I worked with Kenya’s home office for Female issues and Women’s rights ‘Maendeleo ya Wanawake’ in an effort to help spread the word on the dangers of female circumcision. FGM is a harmful, crippling practice that alters the lives of millions of young girls forever. It is irreversible; its consequences haunt the girls long after the procedure. I strongly believe that information, education and public discussion are more effective tools against FGM than direct, prohibitive action. Culture cannot be changed over night."
