Movie Inspiration: Fashion Inspired by Boogie Nights

My favored fashion era is certainly the 1970s. I really like almost everything about ’70s style – the platform shoes, the earthiness carried over from hippie counterculture, the glam of disco, and the voluptuous hairdos. I’m also passionate about the art of film. The mixture of these two subjects inspired me to write about one particular of my all-time favorite movies…Boogie Nights.

A colorful collection from Prada at Milan Fashion Week A/W 2012
The very anticipated Prada show nowadays (streaming really slowly on their Facebook page and homepage) began out dark and detailed and went by way of practically the complete color wheel by the time the final model stalked the plush purple geographic carpeted runway. Recognized for getting the chic epitome of all-black dressing, Miuccia brought out the purples, oranges and yellows in bigger and bolder prints just as soon as you started to settle in to the black beauties at the start.
Silhouettes were quirky with that hard-to-wear, just-above-the-ankle length. It was usually paired with a lengthy coat belted a bit above the all-natural waist and a few inches shorter than the hem of the pants. It gave the impression of interrupted length style advisors are generally cautioning people away from. Guess the 6′ models can pull it off.

Dries van Noten Men’s Fall 2012: Psychedelic Elegance
Extended Nguyen is the co-founder and style director of Flaunt.
PARIS–Three painters were still busy working on a massive mural inside a second floor hall at the Grand Palais when Dries van Noten’s fall men’s collection took to the runway. The artists had been commissioned to recreate the colorful perform of Dutch artists Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters, and had, in fact, been operating for the past 24 hours (their oeuvre can be seen in a time elapsed video can be noticed at driesvannoten.com). The painters ignored the models walking behind them and continued working on their canvas wall.
The colorful mural, which also featured quotes from Oscar Wilde, set the tone for a collection that was meant to embody what the designer dubbed ‘psychedelic elegance.’ A white psychedelic-printed long coat worn with a white wool turtleneck and jeans opened the show, followed by various incarnations of these dense prints on jeans, shirts and jackets. Prints have usually been a Van Noten trademark–recall the cityscape prints in his spring women’s collection–and here the surrealist print jacquard added a flare to a black tie jacket.

Tom Ford makeup: the review
With shades called “Love Bruise” and “Lost Cherry,” Tom Ford’s full makeup collection has finally landed in Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus stores, where it is being sold exclusively. And the products don’t disappoint. They are among the most expensive on the market ($ 48 for a lipstick, $ 75 for foundation). But the last time we spoke, Ford told me he had not experienced any price resistance, and WWD reported that he sold $ 52,000 in one night during a personal appearance to promote the line at New York’s Bergdorf Goodman this month.
Let’s start with the packaging. The black and gold lacquer tubes and compacts are as sleek and elegant as a luxe handbag. But it’s what’s inside that really matters. For me, one of the star products is the Traceless Foundation Stick ($ 78). Really a foundation and concealer in one, it glides across the face like an ice cube — smooth and cool to the touch. It would be a great thing to have in your purse for touch-ups during the day, or to use as a complement to the Traceless Liquid Foundation ($ 75), which is so lightweight it’s feels more like a moisturizer on the face than a traditional foundation.
The collection is based on the concept of layering color, as in, you control how sheer or matte you want the color by how much you layer on. A lot of cosmetics claim to have this quality, but Ford’s really seem to, particularly the shadows in the Eye Color Quads, which include four colors in sheer sparkle, satin, shimmer and matte finishes. They can also be turned into eyeliner by wetting the liner applicator brush included. (One note: I found the shadow particles did occasionally irritate my eyes when I had my contacts in.)

Fall’s Fresh Crop of Corduroy Pants
A look from Theyskens’ Theory fall collection. Photo: Imaxtree
Corduroy may not have the best rep—the fabric’s known more for its durability than its flattering fit. But that hasn’t stopped brands from trying to glam it up since the 1700s, when they tried to rename it “corde du roi,” or “cord of the king”. Nevertheless, the waled material has continuously fallen in and out of style. In 1982 Gianni Versace dedicated his entire menswear line to corduroy back in 1982, but other than that its popularity falls largely on the shoulders of college professors and Jerry Garcia. Until now, at least. This fall, designers took a stab at not only reinventing the material, but the way in which it’s—classic bell bottoms, skinnies, trousers, and even leggings. Olivier Theyskens‘ low slung version for Theory’s our favorite, but here are a few others to get you excited about the traditionally not-so-thrilling material.
Gap 1969 Skinny Bootcut Corduroy Pants. Classic bootcut cords scream fall anyway, but add harvest colors like dried berry and pumpkin orange and you’re set through December.
Theyskens’ Theory Pepper Pant. When choosing a super flared corduroy pant, you might want to stick to a basic shade.
