The night kicked off with a great parade of dresses, from the likes of Prada, Gucci, Lanvin and Dior. But it was Angelina Jolie who stole the show in a breathtaking white gown by Atelier Versace enlivened by a folded red detail on the neckline to match her crimson lips and matching clutch bag. What a welcome surprise! She was joined on the red carpet by a dapper Brad Pitt who was clearly proud of his partner, specially as her directorial debut, ‘In The Land of Blood and Honey’ was nominated for an award. ‘I know how difficult she worked on this film and what it signifies to her and the country,’ he told E! ‘and I surely know how tough I worked!’

Andrea Riseborough in Vivienne Westwood, Madonna in Reem Acra
Madonna was also keen to discuss her directorial debut, ‘W.E’, which scooped the Original Song award. ‘I had no idea that it was going to be so difficult, difficult, exhausting and fulfilling,’ she revealed even though swathed in an amazing ballgown by Reem Acra. Madge’s date was the star of the film, Andrea Riseborough, who described the initial-time director as ‘fantastic’. The English actress was waving the Brit flag thanks to a ginormous Vivienne Westwood gown. Hurrah!

Jessica Biel in Elie Saab
The other topic of discussion here at Grazia HQ is Jessica Biel. The actress was noticeably with no her beau Justin Timberlake on the red carpet AND without an engagement ring, despite rumours that Mr JT proposed earlier this month. Ooh-err.
But inside the ceremony, all eyes had been on Ricky Gervais. In spite of (or possibly because of) the controversy the comedian caused at the past two Golden Globes, he was invited back to present last night’s extravaganza – so how did his wisecracks measure up? We’ll let you be the judge of that when we bring you a round-up of his greatest quips…

Ricky Gervais presents the Golden Globes
‘The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and much more easily purchased – allegedly.’
‘Justin Bieber practically had to take a paternity test. What a waste of a test that would have been! No, he’s not the father. The only way that he could have impregnated a girl was if he borrowed one particular of Martha Stewart’s old turkey basters. Open wide.’
‘I need to not mention Jodie Foster’s ‘Beaver’. I haven’t noticed it myself. I’ve spoken to a lot of guys right here and they haven’t seen it either. That does not mean it’s not any excellent.’
‘Arnold and Maria, J. Lo and Marc Anthony, Ashton and Demi, Kim Kardashian and some guy no one will ever don’t forget. He wasn’t about extended. 72 days — a marriage that lasted 72 days. I’ve sat by way of longer James Cameron speeches.’
Ah, we chuckle. Although Mr Gervais targeted celebrity break-ups and the likes of Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian, his comments were noticeably toned-down and much less shocking than expected, avoiding the Hollywood heavyhitters he pounced on final year. Phewf! And this year, his jokes were well received by the crowd, with Madonna joining in the banter right after he introduced her as becoming ‘just like a virgin’. Her Madgesty fired back: ‘If I’m nevertheless a virgin Ricky, then why don’t you come on do something about it? I haven’t kissed a girl in a few years. On Television.’ Guffaw!
