1. Tarynn (Rowan University): Contemporary Country

1. What inspired your design?

“I wanted to go for something a tiny a lot more Midwestern in feel. Becoming from rural Missouri and going to school in New Jersey, I necessary one thing to remind me of home. It all began with the bedding. I fell in love with the pastel floral sheets and every thing just branched from there. I feel like my room is nation-chic and a small whimsical.”

The unexpected nation elements in Tarynn’s decor add so considerably character to her room, particularly the clotheslines with photos that crisscross more than the bed, and the painting of the cow that Tarynn describes beneath!

2. What are your favored pieces and exactly where are they from?

“Most of my favored pieces I produced myself. The prints on the wall are fabric duct taped to Styrofoam poster board. The photo line was actually straightforward to put together and a excellent way to display my favorite photos without having cluttering up my walls or my dresser. My absolute favorite piece, although, is the cow picture my very best friend, Matt, gave me for Christmas. He took a specific trip to IKEA just to get it. It’s so funny and goes perfectly with my room. Plus, it’s just like looking out my window at property and seeing cattle out in the pasture.”

three. What’s your secret for decorating on a spending budget?

“DIY! Finding crafty during the break before the semester begins keeps you from obtaining too bored and saves you a ton of income. Though I haven’t tried something out but for my area, I adore seeking at websites like Pinterest for fun ideas. You do not require to buy lots of trinkets, particularly if you are really limited on space like I am. But feel of creative ways to add color and texture and pattern to your area.”

Colorful, welcoming, and elegant, Tarynn’s personality perfectly reflects on her room, which began out as “random pieces” that came together to produce a comfortable and gorgeous living space.

four. What’s your favored memory of a thing that’s occurred in your room?

“I truly do not devote tons of time in my space, but my best memory would be at the starting of final semester when every person on my floor was nevertheless obtaining to know each other. We all ordered pizza and watched Mean Girls. That sparked some actually powerful friendships and some spontaneous film quoting given that then.”

2. Katie (University of California, Santa Cruz): Nautical and Swedish

In her dorm decor, Katie of UC Santa Cruz managed to blend two items that wouldn’t strike you as getting too significantly in common: Sweden and sailing. On a latest study abroad trip, Katie collected “much of the decor in my space, such as the Swedish flag, map of Europe, and the postcards from a Danish zoo.” Her marine biology key is also extensively featured in her style, and she loves photography (with great cause, she’s great at it!) and “being surrounded by images of sailboats, anchors, and seashells.” Let’s discover Katie’s room!

I enjoy the a lot of special components of Katie’s room, specifically the vintage oar on the wall, and the homey and comfy nature of the mismatched photo frame display. She makes superb use of wall space, building upwards to make the space appear larger.

1. What inspired your style?

“My style is inspired by my love of the sea and of travel. I’ve usually wanted to reside close to the ocean, and now I’m majoring in marine biology and living in a gorgeous beach town, so nautical symbols are some of my preferred factors to decorate with. This past summer, I studied abroad in Sweden, and several of the other decorations in my space had been collected during my trip.”

two. Exactly where are your preferred pieces from?

“My favored pieces in my space are the photographs hanging on the walls. Everywhere you appear, there’s a thing fascinating with a wonderful history!

3. What’s your secret for decorating on a budget?

“I adore shopping at HomeGoods with my mom, who functions in interior design. It is a hit-or-miss type of retailer, but I’ve discovered some truly fantastic pieces there (including most of my bedding) at very affordable prices. I also tend to acquire small pieces for my room over time at whatever shops I occur to go to, instead of purchasing a ton of stuff at when, so it doesn’t drain my bank account.”

4. What’s your favorite memory of some thing that’s occurred in your area?

“My preferred memory has to be a 3-way tie among when my boyfriend Edward visited from LA following finals this quarter, when my best buddy Roni paid me a surprise pay a visit to, and when I got to decorate my area at the start of the quarter! Immediately after sharing a tiny area with two men and women last year, it was, and still is, truly nice to have a space of my own to decorate nonetheless I like.”

Kalli’s room in her sorority residence at the University of Oregon is cheerful, bubbly, and scrapbook-themed. Her color scheme focuses on teals, pinks, and pale greens, and is continued throughout the complete space. I adore how her and her roomie took the time to match their bedspreads and decor!

1. What inspired your design?

“When my best friend moved to Korea immediately after high school, I produced her a scrapbook as a going away present. From that, I had a ton of leftover paper and crafting supplies.”

two. Where are your favored pieces from?

“We got the lights from Costco, and I really like them! We love to turn off the overhead lights at night, turn on the Christmas lights, and watch a film. It’s so cozy!”

Aiko’s “Kiss” Photo: Merry Karnowsky Gallery

When New Works, the latest show at LA’s Merry Karnowsky Gallery, opens this Saturday, there will be a lot of girl power on the walls—the featured artists consist of Tara McPherson, Deedee Cheriel, Lindsey Way, and Aiko. But gallery owner and show curator Merry Karnowky promises that it’s about wonderful pieces, not effective girls. “The concept of an all-female show being the premise of an exhibition does not interest me in the least,” she explains. “It just so takes place that all 4 of the artists are women and they do some incredible art, but gender was never ever the criteria.”

Instead, what ties the show—which features every little thing from portraiture to stencil-based paintings to dioramas—together is the general attitude. “All of these artists are extremely independent and have a lot of drive and power that comes out in their work,” Karnowsky says. “I like the reality that there are 4 really diverse approaches and dialogues going on, but that nothing at all feels too foreign or out of location.” That could have to do with Karnowsky’s strategy to organizing a show, which is more about following gut feelings than strict guidelines. “I put shows together quite intuitively. There isn’t always a concrete premise that I start out with—it genuinely comes to me as I assume about an artist’s function and spot it in the space [to see] how it will all relate to other perform whilst nevertheless remaining autonomous,” she says.

Tara McPherson’s “Winter” Photo: Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Indeed, the process of placing together this show, which was a year in the generating, is one of evolution: What began as a 3-person series morphed into four immediately after Karnowsky visited Way’s studio in 2011. “I loved how she worked with paper to produce these delicate yet bold dioramas—so I asked her to join the show.”

The outcome is both striking and accessible. “I feel Tara’s ‘seasonal’ portraits have this wonderful element of elegance, which is still edgy but beautiful. Aiko often has so significantly energy and color in her perform, but also a sensuality that is special to most street art becoming made. Deedee makes use of these hybrid human-animal motifs that articulate human behavior—good and bad—with actual delicacy, and Lindsey has developed these dioramas that depict a character’s degeneration and regeneration alongside ship wrecks and monsters, all with sculpted paper and paint,” ticks off Karnowsky. And while they all make sense these days, this is the sort of show that the gallery owner believes would have been much tougher to discover when the “underground” art scene was just forming. “When I started 15 years ago, there were only a handful of galleries exhibiting this kind of operate. Now there are several more— mostly since of the success of it. But even that is great, simply because it keeps the operate related and men and women on their toes. I believe it’s a matter of staying the course, and ultimately the planet will evolve about you.”

Don’t forget that green emerald dress worn by Channing Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan, at the Golden Globes this year? I liked it – it was daringly diverse and who doesn’t adore a princess gown with lengthy train? It appears that (a single) Jenna Dewan, Katherine Heigl and Vanessa Hudgens share the same stylist or (two) each Katherine and Vanessa really like a very good princess gown with long train (wink). Either way, all 3 were wearing quite related dresses from the exact same designer – Maria Lucia Hohan.

I always enjoy it when I hear of bloggers undertaking wonderful issues. Even though I have been blogging for some years now, news of bloggers undertaking well does go some way in validating for me just how extraordinary this whole factor can be. That is why I was delighted to hear of one particular of my favourite bloggers, Emily Schuman of Cupcakes and Cashmere, being recruited by Estée Lauder to be their social media and digital guest editor.

Starting subsequent Monday, Emily will generate posts for esteelauder.com in her own devoted section as well as offer content material for the brand’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts. Some of the attainable topics she could cover are her favourite merchandise and her upcoming April wedding.

For those who are not familiar with her blog, Emily has carved a full-time job out of posting about her favourite foods, property décor suggestions and fashion outfits. But its her how-to beauty posts which have certainly caught the eye of Estée execs who say they “want to reach out to much more ladies,” and “tap into her audience and merge her audience with ours.”

“I love beauty. For any individual who has never ever looked at my blog, I do a lot of how-tos. I am continuously wearing red and pink and orange lipsticks and will experiment with any nail polish,” she mentioned. “They are some of the most nicely-received posts that I do, so I feel like it was just a really all-natural fit to perform with a brand that I enjoy.”

This is not the very first time that she has dealt with main brands. In 2010 she developed a handbag for Coach which sold out immediately. She also has a book coming out in August titled Cupcakes and Cashmere: A Style Guide for Defining Your Style, Reinventing Your Space, and Entertaining with Ease (particulars on Amazon).

“In a sense, I make myself vulnerable. I put out so much of my life, and I put so considerably into it. The difference with a celebrity is they aren’t as transparent with their lives, and it is not as straightforward to relate to that. That is 1 of the factors that blogs do so well, they are relatable,” she added.

Check out her blog at cupcakesandcashmere.com. For a lot more beauty news and product posts, check out Kiss and Makeup.

Introducing CatAtelier!" title="wht beret 2 navy dot scarf" width="300" height="420" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-209641" />
We currently know there are cat fashion bloggers so it follows of course that there would also be cat fashion designers.

A couple of days ago, a friend of mine (who certainly knows me genuinely nicely) linked me to an Etsy shop known as CatAtelier, which, naturally, sells a delightful assortment of very carefully crafted ties, neckpieces and hats for felines. Both the quality of these designs and the reality that this existed totally blew my thoughts and I had to know far more. So, I reached out to the obviously talented designer for an interview and she obliged. It turns out Julie Song went to Parsons and has a BFA in illustration as nicely as a quite obedient cat. Click by way of to see her wonderful designs and learn more about who she is, how and why she got into feline fashion style, and her plans to branch out into cat clothes!

Fashionista: What is your fashion/design background?
Julie Song: I went to Parsons School of Design, and I have my BFA in Illustration. I was initially organizing to be a children’s book illustrator, but I changed my mind right after senior year. I have been sewing because I was young, but it took a while to understand that I preferred operating with clothing and costume.

When did you start Cat Atelier?
I began CatAtelier last winter. Winter is generally slow at the costume studio where I perform, so I had a lot of time to experiment. Plus I was kind of broke- heehee. That is constantly a good motivator.

What created you choose to commence designing cat accessories? Why collars?
I decided to make cat accessories just due to the fact I made a handful of items for my own cat and had a lot of fun. The first factor I designed and produced for my cat was the elf hood, which I employed for my Christmas photo to send to pals last year. A lot of people dress up dogs, but I have constantly felt that there aren’t adequate choices for cats. People typically use pieces made for dogs on their cats, so they don’t fit properly. I wanted to make factors that would appear very good on a cat’s body and are truly nicely produced.

I decided to make collars due to the fact they are versatile, and I could make the bow ties interchangeable. That way you can style them, into distinct outfits. Collars are also pretty simple to fit. I like the similarity to classic menswear, where things are produced-to-measure. Simply because I am promoting on the internet, I can’t have fittings, so it is essential that I offer you things that I can make given only standard measurements. I would enjoy to get far more custom requests though.

What inspires your styles?
A lot of diverse factors inspire me. It’s whatever occurs to strike me: a film, a book, current fashion, historical fashion, television, music, art, whatever. I assume fashion is about creating characters, and stories. Employing clothing and costume in images and video is a way to generate a narrative, taking a idea and turning it into something visual. I have usually been interested in that that is why I majored in illustration, really. It’s dilemma solving: you uncover a way to illustrate a thing with whatever supplies you choose. I like to make factors that play into that, and can be employed to create characters. I adore cats, so creating cats be the characters just seemed natural. It tends to make me laugh. Cats in clothes are just cute. It makes me assume of cats in cartoons. I designed the berets and scarves thinking of tiny French kittycats. You know, like curlicue smoke and molded tin ceilings. oo la la, and all that crap. There was a Tom and Jerry cartoon exactly where Jerry had a French cousin or some thing, that known as Tom: “Monsieur Pussycat”. Sort of silly, but that is the type of thing that entertains me. I have some plans for new pieces that are considerably far more exciting than what I have now.

What do you do when you’re not working on CatAtelier?
I operate at a costume studio, exactly where we make costumes and props for theatre, film, opera, fashion, tv, and so on. I am a craftsperson, and I do a lot of diverse sorts of function. I make a lot of hats and headpieces. Yet another reason I got into creating cat items is the factors that people get produced for dogs. For advertisements and commercials or whatnot. We have this client that gets an elaborate, pricey costume produced for their dog each year. They photograph it like a high fashion ad. The dog has been a toreador, a chinese prince, a maharajah, a Russian tsar… I often make the hat for them. My favorite hat that I made for them was certainly the toreador hat. It was great, if I do say so myself. Anyway, I like the fact that they go all out. I believed: why not go all out for a cat too?

Why did you decide on to sell your designs on Etsy?
Etsy is very good since I can have listings up and make everything to order, instead of generating a complete lot at once. I assume a lot far more individuals have noticed my items than if I had tried to sell them on my own. I like getting every little thing organized for me.

How numerous have you sold?
I do not know the exact number, but a fairly great quantity. It is building. I have been asked about wholesale, but I am not undertaking that but. I haven’t had time to produce in bulk.

Is the model your own cat?
Yes, my model is my personal cat. His name is Toki Nantucket, and he is an Abyssinian. He is my model and muse. I couldn’t make cat items without a fit model at residence. I really want to make a cat dress form/manniquin and a cat head form for myself even though, so I don’t have to bother him really so significantly in the course of the process. He’s type of wiggly during draping sessions. It would help when I style hats specially.

Does he like wearing the collars?
I wouldn’t say he loves it, but he doesn’t dislike it. He is an amazing model. I have kind of a routine for photo shoots, and he is cool with it. What he likes is CHICKEN. I feel he models for the chicken. I bake chicken and cut it up into bites that I preserve in ziplock bags in the refrigerator and freezer. I give him some before each and every photo shoot, and then some immediately after. I get the accessories and items ready beforehand, along with lights, etc. I do photo shoots in the bathroom due to the fact it’s straightforward to clear, small, and I can shut the door. and it’s warm, which Toki likes. I bring him in, dress him, and take pictures pretty quickly. He’s gotten utilized to this, and sits proper down and poses. Kind of a miracle for a cat. I really lucked out that Toki is such a great model. To make him appear at the camera, I tap a toy or rattle one thing. It has to be sort of a dumb toy that he’s not actually interested in, or he will leap out and start playing. With a dumb toy, he looks up interestedly, but then he offers me a look like, “yeah what’s so fantastic about that?” I preserve the photo shoots short so he doesn’t really feel like it’s a torture session. That way he will not dread wearing clothes. After we are carried out, he runs correct to the refrigerator because he knows he’s acquiring a lot more chicken. He is really food oriented, and smart. Abyssinians are actually truly active and playful cats, even even though you can’t tell from his model shots.

What materials do you use?
I use a lot of cottons for the collars and bow ties. Calico prints and ginghams and such. Pinpoint oxford, broadcloth, etc. I also use satin, taffeta, wool flannel, wool crepe, silk (often), felt, lace…

Do you program to expand into other products?
Yes, I am going to make some actual cat clothes as well as the accessories and hats. I have a bodysuit/union suit thing that will be accessible soon. It is great for cats post-surgery, or for cats that have psychogenic alopecia (they more than-groom). Instead of having them put on the “cone of shame”. It’s also good for cold climate. I put one particular on Toki when we go for walks in cold climate. He walks with a harness and leash. I can make items in dog sizes too, and I do have a few listings up for them. But I am not as interested in that, to be entirely honest. It is hard to design for dogs occasionally due to the fact they are such different sizes and shapes from breed to breed. And I do not have a dog at property to fit model for me.

P.S. We not too long ago learned Song is not the only expert cat fashion designer out there. For a list of the ten best (in which she is included), head over to Catster.

We all love a good model cover. Nonetheless, Vogue China’s March 2012 Cover is so poor, I’d rather see a celebrity cover rather of it any day! Besides, Vogue China doesn’t care significantly about becoming original – a person need to have heard that we’d love to see a model on the cover of Vogue. So they decided to double the pleasure (we do love Isabeli Fontana and Natasha Poly, but this photo is tasteless)! (can you please stop, Vogue China? Use your imagination, fashion is all about creativity, not repetition!)

Project Runway‘s All Star cast lost the very first of its menfolk last night. Sadly, it was the fantastic Anthony Williams who took the fall. We spoke with the delightfully upbeat designer this afternoon about his experiences on the show, sneaking out of the contestants’ home for mussels at Cafeteria, and which of the new judges looks like Casper the Friendly Ghost.

You seemed quite prepared for poor news on the runway final night. Were you expecting to be auf’ed?

Yes. Not necessarily [prior to the runway show], but as soon as I saw all the girls leave the runway, I was like, “Mmm, that is a little too tv for me.” It was quite apparent. Right after that many girls went residence in a row, we knew the next person was gonna be a guy.

Did that increase the pressure?

No, the reality is, whatever’s going to take place is going to happen. I thought in the finish, the judges’ choice was fair according to what they mentioned. You just get over it.

Did you feel their assessment of your look’s found fabric/new fabric percentage breakdown was fair?

A single thing I’ve mentioned is that the whole challenge was inconsistent. At the beginning of the challenge, we had been told to develop a appear, fifty percent of which had to be from items you got from an individual on the street. Then, on the runway, it turned into “fifty percent of your fabric.” When [the producers] delivered the guidelines, it wasn’t all on camera. I’m not saying that the producers did something wrong, but there was a lot of area for miscommunication. That is when I started becoming a tiny flustered, due to the fact I was like, “Wait a minute, my design was going in a single path, now it is going in this direction.” It’s just, like, “ugh.” Where’s a cocktail when you require it?

While clothes hunting in Union Square, it seemed like a lot of the designers identified 1 individual for their muse and stopped there, but you collected garments from lots of people —mainly cute guys. Did that become a issue, getting too a lot fabric to work with?

The reality is, the producers encouraged us to get [clothes] from a lot of men and women. It was to see if you could get somebody to get naked. But you can’t rationalize irrational decisions — and, much more importantly, this isn’t my game. It was never ever in my cards to win Project Runway All-Stars. I’m not saying that to sound like a loser. I’m saying that what I went on the show for, I was in a position to do. I wanted to make confident I could manage my own on tv, I wanted to see growth in my operate, I wanted to make sure I didn’t sacrifice my character. And I will admit, when I’d been eliminated, I had the summer of my life in New York City. I was sneaking out and going every-damn-exactly where. I was going to Cafeteria every night. The guy who worked the door used to work at Mood. We didn’t have to wait on a table, he just got us in. I was consuming mussels and macaroni and cheese and acquiring drunk every single night.

So you are not at present based in New York?

No, I reside in Atlanta. But I’m preparing a move, and this move will most likely be the equivalent of Madonna dropping an album: I’m moving to L.A. It is gonna be a massive deal.

Because you can’t get struck by lightning if you don’t stand in the rain. I enjoy fashion style, but I’m developed for television. I was made for it. I think I bring some thing very refreshing, something very special and natural and natural to the knowledge, and I want to continue to pursue that. I get so a lot of provides and so numerous producers pitching shows and items of that nature, but they all think that I reside in L.A. And guess what? They’re not gonna come to Atlanta to find the subsequent great talent. I gotta go to L.A. and say, “Hello! I’m the next wonderful talent.”

Let’s talk about showcasing that talent of yours. Did you have reservations about carrying out All-Stars?

Most certainly. But after careful consideration I believed it was an honest competition, and I just moved past it and began having fun.

Was there any person you expected to see in the lineup who wasn’t there?

I believed Nick Verreos was coming back, but I believe when you get to a place exactly where he is in his profession, it may possibly not have been a good look for him. But I would have been glad to meet him, due to the fact I’m one of his fans. I didn’t know who was gonna be on the show, but they sent an inexperienced wrangler to get me from my friend’s residence in New York City and [I could see] he had the list of absolutely everyone he was gonna choose up from the airport. And, you know, folks assume I’m just funny, but they do not know that I’m very clever. Honey, I knew everyone on the damn show by the time we produced it to the second cease light in the cab ride to the studio. [laughs] I wasn’t expecting Mila. And I can honestly say I don’t know who I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting her to be on the show. At all. In any capacity.

I’m not gonna attack her style aesthetic, but watching her last night and the way she and Michael Costello type of partnered together to speak behind someone’s back…that’s a planet I don’t reside in. I don’t go over anything that is not my business, but I can tell that’s a portion of who she is naturally. I feel it comes across on tv that she’s extremely smug, she’s a backbiter. She’s almost certainly a superb woman, but I think given this opportunity she could have worked tougher to project a sweeter part of who she is. But I guess if there’s no sweet part, then that’s that.

But did you get along with all the designers, for the most component?

I did. Rami, Kara, and myself, we had been like the Kardashians. Let me give you the thought process behind that: not because we wanted to be the Kardashians, but we felt that if we just added the last name Kardashian, we could be any damn factor we wanted to be. Otherwise, I’ll tell you this, if you wanted to figure out, not necessarily the hierarchy, but who was friends with who, look at the gelato challenge. When it was time to choose who went next to choose their gelato, I’m telling you, the writing was on the wall, and it was ugly.

So you will be rooting for Rami and Kara then?

I’ll be rooting for Rami, Kara, and Austin. I assume that they are people who came with completely no agenda but to win. I think they are wholesome competitors you do not appear them ripping folks apart. I most absolutely assume that all of them deserve to win.

If Project Runway provided you a third opportunity for the win, would you go back?

Confident, I would go back. It’s too easy to get caught up in your ego over becoming booted off the show – how dare I be upset simply because I got eliminated? No one is immune from the process. It was me this week, but it was someone else final week and it’ll be somebody else this upcoming Thursday. So how dare I feel that a person owes me something, or that I was accomplished incorrect simply because it didn’t function out in my favor? I plan on going shopping in about an hour, and I guarantee you there will not be a size 36 in the pants I’m seeking for. The difficulty of final night will have absolutely nothing to do with the difficulty of right now.

Would you want a entire new set of judges again, or to preserve the panel as is now — or as it was?

Well, I didn’t know who Angela Lindvall was when we began, and I nonetheless have no idea about her character to be perfectly honest I just know they need to get her some shoes she can walk in. I was a small disappointed in…what’s his name? Isaac Mizrahi. I was truly upset with a comment he created final evening — he described me as lazy, when clearly for the final 24 hours we’d worked like dogs on the challenge, only for [him] to sit [his] ass in the chair and critique what we’ve accomplished? No, sweetie. Appear in the mirror. You are the instance of lazy, not me. All you have to do is let somebody throw some Casper the White Ghost makeup on your face and sit in that stool and be entertained by what we present and what we say. You can say what I made was awful, but to say that I was lazy, that indicates you’re saying a thing about my character. And I didn’t like that.

For the 1st time this season, the judges did seem to get a small snarky last night.

Well, they’re never ever gonna edit the judges to look other than superb and remarkable. They do not send makeup artists to do our makeup, but they get a whole damn beauty team. I’m like, “No! We worked like dogs! Send a person over to put some powder on me!” I’m personally quite grateful for the L’Oreal Paris Makeup Room. I went in there and did my own makeup. Make sure you put that in!
