Structured B & W Simplicity: Calvin Klein Collection Spring 2013

I was definitely thinking simple. And structured, visibly constructions of linear sartorial geometry. But Calvin Klein Collection Spring Summer 2013 was more than that. It was simple at a Spartan level. Laser linear. And… well. Calvin Klein. I couldn’t wear this during hot summer days, though.{style}

Geek Chic: Fashion Inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Part I

In every generation, there is a chosen one…she alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She will inspire legions of die-hard Whedonites, multi-disciplinary academic conferences and studies, and Geek Chic inspired-by articles. She is the Slayer.

You knew this was coming. I recently watched all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for the first time and developed a serious-as-a-stake-through-the-heart obsession with the show.

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring Splendor

Oscar de la Renta’s Spring SplendorOh Oscar, you’ve done it again! While he continues to cater to the Uptown set and polished political types, for Spring 2013 Oscar de la Renta delivered something for everyone… or atleast for the lucky ones. There were grand ball-gowns, jumpers, sleek pencil skirts, and even a few mini moments. Silhouettes varied but the impeccable attention to detail remained the same. Standout looks included a teal leather skirt worn with a spectacular fuchsia jacket and the oyster stargazer gown, which Karlie Kloss wore to close the show.

The collection was characheristically elegant, but the hairstyles marked an awesome deviation from the norm; every girl sported a beehive with neon strikes for a punky retro effect. Here’s to hoping one or two ladies who lunch are brave enough to rock this up-do. And if they’re not, we’re counting on the young Hollywood set to sport this season’s complete Oscar look!

Clover Canyon Spring 2013

Clover Canyon Spring 2013The Clothes: Indie California office-casual meets Reefer Madness Southwest road trip-inspired prints. Cannabis prints. It’s important to start with that, because they were there, on a white pant suit and crop top/knee-length skirt outfit in the middle of the presentation. It’s weird to think, “Hmm, cannabis leaves are kind of pretty,” but the way Clover Canyon does them, glitterized and Liberace-shiny, deserve some admiration. It looked like they painted cannabis leaves on white, shattered a silver disco ball, and glued all the broken remnants on top to create a mosaic. Even if not as controversial, the other print subjects were just as fun: White muscle cars, surfers at beachside sunset, international dollar bills, Marlboro-style cowboys, and long, winding roads. They were flipped, reversed, paired with crazy paisleys and Aztecs, and accented with the occasional crystal cluster, to create busy eye graphic art prints. By keeping the silhouettes grown-up and pretty structured (blazer-short suits, blazer-tapered pants, button downs, knee length skirts, halter-neck sundresses), the prints avoided looking hokey. The head-to-toe printed suits looked vaguely Balmain-like. Photographers kept gravitating towards this white, diaphanous blouse and pant combo with winding crystal floral embroidery that would please any Mexican rodeo cowboy.

The Hair & Makeup: Clean makeup, and pulled back ponys with a slight rolled back pouf pinned on top.

The Soundtrack: Shazaam failed me here, so I can’t name specifics. Like a rollicking feel-good road trip mix tape made by your best friend.

New York Fashion Week: Vera Wang – Gallery

The Vera Wang show was, in the words of the designer herself, “A nod to the romantic beauty and sensuality of India, from the simple strictness of jackets, tunics, and sheaths, to an exploration of volumes, both fluid and structured.”

An all-white opener of full skirts, cotton jackets and airy, lace trousers made way to jewel-toned dresses in blue, green, purple and gold. Skirts were either full, tiered and midi length, or soft, sheer and slim to just below the knee. The silhouette through the top half was either slim and fitted with a high neck, or wide and off-the-shoulder, in heavy silks with puffy long sleeves.

For a Summer collection, this had quite a dark, rich feel and many of the fabrics – brocades, heavy laces – felt quite Autumnal. By blending sheer with heavy, Wang managed to keep it light for the hot weather.

Our favourite pieces included a green midi dress with bold bronze bodice detailing, a cool pair of white lace trousers with a layered waistcoat with detailed panels, and a high-neck, pencil skirted dress in pale gold brocade with a jewel trim.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve taken a look at the styles from some of the most-loved sitcoms of the ’80s and ’90s… but why not go back a little further? After all, styles from past decades have been coming back around lately, and the good old 1950s is no exception. Full skirts, head scarves, cardigans, and pearl necklaces –what’s not to absolutely love?

For today’s Old School TV Style post, we’re taking a look at one of TV’s greatest classics, I Love Lucy. Starring Lucille Ball and her real-life husband Desi Arnez, this show ran for six seasons and is widely considered one of the greatest TV shows of all time. As one of the first sitcoms to feature a woman as the title role, I Love Lucy broke the mold for TV shows of the time and blazed a trail for women in comedy.

Gilded Age S/S 2013 Lookbook

photo%201 thumb 466x466 99681 Gilded Age S/S 2013 Lookbook

It’s a good thing that fashion week doesn’t come more often in New York. The melange of manufacturers, designers and PR People! The cacophony of sounds and the palette of colors can be overwhelming to the senses. Oh. And the aromas of New York street food!

One of the shows I saw during fashion week here in NYC was Gilded Age’s presentation of their S/S13. In the middle of Lincoln center, and to be more specific, at The Public Library. They had some 20 dudes standing on a stage and wearing the new collection. So it was not really a runway show, but a “standway” show. Fine with me, I was able to check out the dudes jeans close up and really loved what I saw (the jeans, too!). Lots of muted colors, nothing too screaming or garish, very fashionable and in excellent taste. Just to remind you. Gilded Age uses only organic dye and organic cotton.

Casual Chic J. Crew Spring Summer 2013 Collection

There’s always a smart chic quality to J. Crew’s casual designs. And the Spring Summer 2013 collection is faithful to that directive. Judging only by the looks selected below, I wouldn’t mind having all the looks from the said collection in my closet. And then I’d be singing that happy tune every day: “I feel pretty, all so pretty…”
