Just What a Russian Princess in Exile Would Want to Wear Today
When the Russian Revolution resulted in the handsome Prince Felix Youssoupoff and his dazzling princess-bride, Irina Youssoupoff (nee Romanova) – niece of the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II – heading into exile in Paris, the pair went native…way native & established a fashion label! Adjoining the first syllables of their first names, IRFE was founded in 1924 and garnered a following of fellow jetsetters in Europe and the US and their sleek designs – a signature of high fashion in the 1920s & 30s – were featured in Vogue. Unfortunately, the economic woes of 1929 led to the house being shuttered.
Fast forward eight decades.
The label – still Paris-based & staffed – has been recently revived and creative director Olga Sorokina (left) has been working it on the red carpet at events like Cannes and the Vanity Fair & Gucci parties, the Chopard Mystère party & amfAR’s Cinema Against AIDS After Party.

Summer Fridays: On Vacation with Designer Barbara Bui
It’s summer and that means on Fridays everyone should be sneaking out of work a little bit early to go on a weekend jaunt or grab a drink on a sunny rooftop. The fashion industry, which works really hard, also knows how to cut loose and play hard. In our new weekly column, called Summer Fridays, we catch up with industry insiders to find out what they do, where they go, and what they bring with them when they escape the daily grind. We’ve vacayed with stylist Johnny Wujek and hit the road with Timo Weiland. This week, we’re catching up with designer Barbara Bui. Bon voyage!
Barbara Bui took the fashion world by storm in 1987, introducing her rock and roll aesthetic to the Parisian market. Known for her luxe, high-fashion eye and uncompromising penchant for all things cool, young, and downtown the French designer has since built an empire around the world starting with her first boutique in New York’s own SoHo in 2001. Today, celebs from Kristen Stewart, Jessica Biel, to Ciara have embraced the Barbara Bui brand as part of their red carpet look–especially those snakeskin heels.
When not busy working on her next collection, Bui is off diving, rafting, and exploring exotic locales throughout the world. Rock and roll style, of course. Read more…
Lana Del Rey for H&M Fall 2012
She’s gone from playing “Video Games” on the runways of fashion’s heavy hitters to attending some of the industry’s most prestigious events, and Lana Del Rey is showing no signs of slowing down! One of music’s biggest sensations was recently selected to be the face of H&M for Fall 2012, whose full campaign was released yesterday with a later Winter 2012-2013 promotion set soon. In the print advertisements shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, the singer wears some of the retailer’s coziest clothes for the season, including a plush pink angora sweater, tough tweed biker jacket, and a snug tweed dress with faux leather trimming. Be on the lookout as Del Rey will also be featured in a music video for the Bobby Vinton classic, “Blue Velvet” that will debut in mid-September with edited versions used as the store’s TV commercials.
The music video will premiere September 19th on HM.com with the print ads appearing in October issues of our favorite fashion magazines nationwide.
Six of the best: Leather full skirts

Leather skirts get a bad rap. The instant image that most people conjur up is a super-short, tiny scrap of leather teamed with an equally skimpy top and hooker heels. Or the over-the-top stage outfits of stars like Demi Lovato (left) whose double leather look works well on stage but may be too much for a day in the office.
But team a full leather skirt with simple pieces (a white shirt looks amazing tucked into a leather skater skirt) or opt for a longer length like Salvatore Ferragamo (above) or McQ, and you can actually end up with quite a grown-up, sophisticated look. This is a key trend for Autumn / Winter and the high street is full of great real and faux leather options. Here are six of our favourites…
