Backstage at Colombia Fashion Week: An Inside Look at Models’ Wages, Hours and Working Conditions

Covering Colombiamoda, we knew that as at any fashion week, most of the action would be going on backstage. We had lots of questions: who were the top models? What was the work like? And what was everyone getting paid? In a year when organizations like the CFDA and the Model Alliance have attempted to improve backstage conditions, including by pushing for designers in New York to only hire models over the age of 16 for runway work, to provide healthful foods, and to bar backstage photography in areas where models change clothes, we were keen to take a look backstage for ourselves.
Most of the models at Colombiamoda were locals — the only foreigner we could find was Holland’s Next Top Model alum-slash-lingerie model Sylvia Geersen. But several Colombian models who work internationally came home for the shows, including the buzzed-about IMG new face (and recent Models.com MOTW) Catalina Llanes.
Daniela Quintero, who last year represented Colombia in the international Elite Model Look competition, said her week was going pretty well. “I like to see the new talent, and these very prestigious designers,” she added, before she had to head into hair and makeup for another show.

Triarchy – High Waisted For Fall 2012
Family owned Canadian brand Triarchy just launched the most amazing high waisted jeans for this coming Fall 2012. So far, I have not yet been able to find a pair of high waisted jeans that fit me perfectly, there is always the problem of either being too tight at the legs, or, if they fit right, then they gap at the waist. But I am definitely giving these a try. Especially since I am having a torrid love affair with those gold jeans shown above. The amazing thing about them is not only the color, but I love that the wash is kind of – how best to describe it – uneven? Not as if they were just painted all over with gold, but the denim shows through and this gives these jeans such a very special effect. I am absolutely in LOVE! These jeans are DIFFERENT! And you all have figured out by now that I am a sucker for different jeans LOL!!!
I also love this lookbook itself. The Triarchy team went to Peru especially to create this beautiful work. What a refreshing change from seeing the jeans on models in front of a green or grey or whatever wall.

Boux Avenue announces face of ‘Embrace Your Curves’ range
Dragon’s Den star Theo Paphitis’ lingerie label Boux Avenue this week revealed the new face of the ‘Embrace Your Curves‘ range, Aussie model Robyn Lawley.
With the measurements 36-32-42 and D-cup breasts, Lawley isn’t your average lingerie model. The 6’2″ Amazon is technically a plus size model (she wears an Australian size 16 – Aussie sizing is similar to UK) but you’ll probably agree from these photos that she’s not exactly representative of the average size 16! Lawley was originally a ‘straight size’ model, before putting on weight to tackle the growing plus size market. Since then, her career has skyrocketed.
As Boux Avenue takes pride in the fact it offers a wider range of sizes than some rivals (with bras up to an H cup) it’s no surprise they’ve chosen to go with a model who’s able to fill out those designs. Interestingly though, many of the briefs only go up to a size 18 or 20, and some band sizes stop at a 38. Is this another case of using a plus size model to get publicity, but not actually catering to plus sizes with the actual range?
