Samuel Glassmann Cufflinks

samuel glassmann paris cufflinks selectism Samuel Glassmann Cufflinks

Samuel Glassmann of Paris takes his cufflinks seriously, as made obvious by his description of the production process for some of them. As described below. More importantly, they look incredibly finished and well made. The brilliance in color force them to standout when worn.

“Firstly, the pion is milled in order to create two flat surfaces: one surface being the outer part of the shell … Using a bath of muriatic acid, the burnt edges of the pawn caused because of the milling process, are scoured away. Next, polishing: in a wooden barrel filled with water and powdered pumice stone the angular aspects of the pions are smoothed out so not to damage the shirt buttonholes when they are eventually in use… Finally, the link between the cufflinks is created with a silk thread known as ‘cordonnet’. Cordonnet was used in the 19th century for sewing buttonholes and preserving contact between the button and the silk thread.” Serious business.

Tod’s “Schooldays” Film

Click here to view the embedded video.

GQ UK showcases an interesting little film “celebrating” the Tod’s line. “It doesn’t get more old school than Tod’s, the luxury Italian shoemaker that first made the moccasin sophisticated back in the Seventies. In this short film from GQ Creative Fashion Director Jo Levin and photographer Guzman, the brand takes a moment to celebrate their signature shoe with a little old-fashioned tomfoolery at Milton Abbey school in Dorset.” Dare not call it “Dead Poets.”

omar and the stringpoppers selectism The Lower East Side Rockabilly Hob Nob this Sunday

Rockabilly anyone?

For those living or visiting NYC this weekend, you may want to trot over to the LES for the first NYC show by Los Angeles’ Wild Records recording artists Omar & The Stringpoppers. For those into the rockabilly sound, it is sure to be a big deal. “The band have developed into the US’s number one rockabilly band playing extensively throughout California and Europe. Omar [Romero] onstage is like watching a tornado unleash. If you find this a bold statement, when you catch his live show, you will not be disappointed. Over the last two years, Omar and the Stringpoppers have played in Spain, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, UK, and they were one of the healdliners at Viva Las Vegas 2003 [and 2005]” (photo)

Check them on Sunday, July 18th at Manhattan’s Lower East Side Self Edge New York shop.

Daisy Lowe Roughed Up Her Pretty Dress

20100715 daisylowe 250x375 Daisy Lowe Roughed Up Her Pretty Dress

Daisy Lowe attended the opening of the Acne London studio today wearing a sheer white maxi dress embellished with daisies. She pulled the nineties trick of pairing a floaty frock with seriously scuffed boots to make it look grungier (or as grungy as one can really look when toting a Chanel bag). Lowe also carried a black leather jacket and wore stacks of silver rings.

Do you like when romantic dresses are toughened up with rock-and-roll accessories? Are Lowe and ilk ruining a perfectly feminine look?

In what looks to be their “biggest ever fashion event,” The USA’s own Calvin Klein presented their Berlin “show” for Spring 2011 inside a former mint. From what Wallpaper* captured, it would seem it was massive. “J. Mayer H. Architects were commissioned by Calvin Klein to create a backdrop for the brand’s biggest presentation in Europe to date… According to Jürgen Mayer H, the installation featured ‘Stonehenge-like sculptural objects, huge forms of pieces that could fit together like a three-dimensional puzzle…’”

Rodarte’s Mexico-Inspired MAC Line Sparks Controversy

20100715 rodarte mac ad 250x375 Rodarte’s Mexico Inspired MAC Line Sparks Controversy
Rodarte for MAC.

Rodarte’s MAC collection, which launches on September 15, is inspired by Mexico’s colors and culture, and the products are named accordingly. For example, one pink blush is called Quinceañera, while a sheer white lipstick is called Ghost Town. However, the frosty pink nail polish called Juarez isn’t sitting well with blogger the Frisky, who finds it “tasteless”:

Why’s it tasteless? Juarez is an impoverished Mexican factory town notorious for the number of women between the ages of 12 and 22 who have been raped and murdered with little or no response from police.
