Gucci and Vanity Fair Celebrate Martin Scorsese

Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini and Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter fused fashion and film at the 63rd Annual Cannes International Film Festival. The duo partnered to host an intimate dinner at the Hotel du Cap, followed by a bash to honor Martin Scorsese and the 20 year anniversary of The Film Foundation. Stars like Camilla Belle, Salma Hayek, Naomi Watts, and Jennifer Lopez arrived in Giannini’s divine designs. Belle dazzled in a one-of-a-kind off the shoulder cocktail dress encrusted with gunmetal Swarovski stones, while Hayek wore a one-of-a-kind cap sleeve cocktail dress with pailette embroidery. Lopez went for a Grecian inspired look in a pale gray one shoulder Moroccan silk frock. The designer was not without her own sparkling confection; Giannini glistened in a georgette halterneck cocktail dress with cutaway shoulder neckline, metal beaded embroidery and mirrored geometric stone detail. The abundance of metallics transformed the room into a disco of sorts and when Gucci and Vanity Fair are involved we’d expect nothing less.

Selfridges Oxford Street “Music in May” Windows Displays

It is not often I get to see Empire of the Sun, a band which I bet the house on in 2008, in the windows of Selfridges. From the looks of this article in Dazed, this would look to be true for a few as part of Selfridge’s Music for May campaign (which looks to be coming to a close). “As part of their Music in May season, Selfridges have invited ten music artists to takeover their window displays for their ‘Sounds of The Mind’ project where the Oxford Street store will be overrun with artwork inspired by a song, each by the musicians. The XX… alongside the like of Empire of the Sun, Marina & The Diamonds, Paloma Faith, Charlotte Gainsbourg, The Drums, Florence, Hot Chip and Dizzee Rascal all applying their creatiive juices to design their own windows.”

Rapha Maharam Cycling Cap for BESPOKE

The sheer amount of interesting product coming down the pipe from the Rapha brand is unacceptable. There is simply too much to cover. While it may seem like a single editor’s selection with Rapha, the push for their goods to get shine on these pages comes from various ends of the Titel family – we have writers falling in love with something new almost daily.
Here’s a quick one in the form of a cycling cap as made for the BESPOKE exhibition in NYC recently. “Celebrating the exhibition BESPOKE: The Handbuilt Bicycle opening in New York City on May 13, this limited edition Rapha Cap features a Brushed Camel textile from Maharam, the New York-based innovators of textiles.” 75 total caps produced. Get on it.

Fashion Students Must Compete With Psychology Students for Retail Jobs

Footwear News recently reported on the severe dearth of jobs for recent design-school grads. If you weren’t independently wealthy and refused to do anything but fashion design, you were bound to be screwed out of employment. However, today, WWD reports the industry’s job prospects are not entirely dismal. Liz Claiborne has been recruiting for its Kate Spade and Juicy Couture brands. And the retail sector has a lot to offer, landing at the top of a recent survey by National Association of College and Employers of employers offering jobs to new bachelor’s degree holders. Macy’s, JCPenney, and Target are among those companies recruiting the most on college campuses.
However, specialized fashion students will have to compete with students who majored in things that have nothing to do with the business of clothing. And people with MBAs!
