Michelle Obama’s St. Patrick’s Day Sheath

Michelle Obama got into the spirit of St. Patty’s Day Wednesday. The First Lady wore a Jason Wu green faille dress with embroidered French knots to the St. Patrick’s Day reception in the East Room of the White House. Just last week Wu met Mrs. O for the first time when she unveiled her Inauguration dress at the Smithsonian. We wonder if he brought this frock along on the Acela…

Rock ‘n’ Roll Lives on at the The Runaways Premiere

The Landmark Sunshine Cinema served as the meeting grounds for two rocking generations Wednesday night. On one side: the rock ‘n’ rollers, those who danced in the clubs to David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, and their peers. On the other: the Twilight-generation, a small army of teenagers passionate in their idolatry of their favorite characters come to life. The crowd surrounded the theater cheering while flashbulbs incessantly went off. It was a movie premiere night worthy of rock legends–The Runaways.
The movie, set in the mid-1970’s tells the true story of The Runaways an all-girl rock and roll band fronted by Joan Jett and Cherie Currie played by Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. Brought together by producer Kim Fowley, played with manic brilliance by Michael Shannon, the group shook up the world with their raw sexual energy and musical talent. The film’s strength is it’s ability to capture the essence of the time. Whether the stars are draped dancing under the neon disco lights or hanging back in a smoky, grungy alley the spirit of the time is put perfectly to image. But there is no mistake about it, the stars of the band were at the forefront of the movie, with Stewart and Fanning’s commanding performances. The dreamy, love-filled Almost Famous-type of film, this isn’t. This is the rock ‘n’ roll that parents were afraid of. The destructive, engulfing force that could not be stopped.
Of course, the star-studded premiere, which was hosted by Tommy Hilfiger and Quintessentially, attracted celebrities from all walks to attend the premiere. Joan Jett, an executive producer of the film arrived to much deserved fanfare. Stalwarts of the scene old and new like Debbie Harry, Chuck Zito, Erin Lucas, and Olivia Palermo were in attendance. Music icons Steven Van Zandt, Debbie Harry, and the Beastie Boys‘ Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond were there as well. Even models like Riley Keough (who played Marie Currie in the film), Alessandra Ambrosio, and Doutzen Kroes came to see the movie. “I’m excited to see all of them. I’m a big fan of all the actors. I know the songs, but I’m most curious to see how they turn the story into a film.” said Kroes.
Lord of the Logos: Designing the Metal Underground Book

Now this is my kind of book. Gestalten brings together the art and color of metal by compiling the work of Christophe Szpajdel into Lord of the Logos. “This book is a collection of work by Christophe Szpajdel, an artist whose fans in the underground black metal community worship him as the Lord of the Logos. It includes hundreds of powerful logos, each of which captures the force of this musical genre anew. Through his surprising use of aesthetic influences such as art deco and nature, Szpajdel has brought a new dynamic into the gothic visuality of heavy metal.” May we ad that it is also styled around a black prayerbook? Also seen on Curated.
