Fifty-Nine in ‘84
In 1884, Providence Gray’s pitcher Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn won 59 games. He won three in that years World Series, marking him a champion and solidifying the greatest pitching record in baseball history. Fifty-Nine in ‘84 tells Radbourn’s tale and also captures the spirit of baseball in the 19th-century. It was rough and tough. The players drank hard, they thought nothing of cheating, and apparently didn’t much mind maiming an opponent either. Not dissimilar, probably, to proper football of the period. (By proper I am, of course, referring to soccer). There’s also a subtext of some boarding house action – the love of Radbourn’s life was said to have been quite friendly with every man in the National League.
The author of Fifty-Nine in ‘84 is Edward Achorn, a former Pulitzer Prize finalist.
All in all, the book has all the makings of a fantastic story. It releases tomorrow.

Legal correspondent Dan Abrams is expanding his web portfolio of sites ending in “ite” with Styleite, which launched today with a nice hot-pink logo. Verena von Pfetten, who worked at Air America Media and the Huffington Post, is editor-in-chief, and Abrams’s ex-assistant Ruthie Friedlander is senior editor. In addition to news and user-uploaded photos, the site gives fashion-inclined folk what they really want: statistics, which are used to rank the top editors, personal-style bloggers, models, executives, etc. In the designer category, Marc Jacobs ranks No. 1, Alexander McQueen is No. 2, and Ralph Lauren is No. 3. French Revue de Modes #16
Pairing high-end clothing with denim is a continued trend in the world of magazines editorials, perhaps an attempt to connect better with consumers who have opted to spend their money more wisely, or it could be an extension of denim permeating every aspect of our wardrobe. French Revue de Modes has taken the finest of today’s denim looks including overalls by Jean Paul Gaultier, a studded bustier by Guess Jeans, Levi’s jeans and Replay jeans and styled them with Lanvin, Jill Sander and Viktor and Rolf.
