Meet the Green Goddesses of Natural Perfume. Plus Snag Fabulous Twitter Giveaways!

Fifteen years ago, before we learned we were leaving carbon footprints and the only recycle bin was the one on our desktop, there was a seed planted by perfumer Mandy Aftel which has gradually grown into a revolution in contemporary perfumery: a rediscovery and rebirth of the ancient art of creating fragrance without synthetics. Perfumus is the Latin word for ‘through smoke’ and for millenniums throughout the world on every continent, doctors, scientists, priests and shamans have used natural blends as medicine or offerings to the gods. Historically, the upper classes had their own private perfumers; icons like Cleopatra, Queen Makeda (aka the Queen of Sheba), Catherine de Medici, and King Henry VIII all used the alchemy of natural fragrance to seduce, bewitch and entice (and to cover the smell of unwashed bodies).

It wasn’t until relatively recently, in the early 1900s, that the use of synthetic materials in perfume ‘replaced’ a time-honored art and it might have disappeared entirely in recent years, save the work of a few visionary natural perfumers. Seven, in particular, have educated me, influenced me, introduced me to, and helped me learn about natural, organic and botanical perfumery.

Acne Pop Classic F/W 2010 Collection

acne pop 2010 fall winter 3 thumb 440x647 32679 Acne Pop Classic F/W 2010 Collection

The Fall/Winter 2010 men’s lookbook from Acne’s lower priced Pop Classics collection includes some patched jeans where the patches are almost as big as the jeans themselves. These remind me of the reinforced pants that carpet layers wear because they spend a lot of time on the knees.

Just Cavalli fall 2010

Just Cavalli’s fall 2010 collection was a wild mix of everything “Cavalli”. The fact that he lives for his dear animal prints is just proofed with yet another collection containing many animal printed pieces. This time around, it’s more updated and to fit into the 2010 year, he mix it up and creates his very own glam-grunge look. A crazy selection of patterns are mixed together and if you throw in a little bit of fur, specially collars, and leather you might get the picture. Plaid flannel shirts, patchwork sweaters and mini kilts and shiny, over the top leggings is worn together and different kind of animal printed pieces is put on all at the same time. It was many ohh’s and aah’s after the show, and even though I can understand the whole concept, I wouldn’t wear it myself.

Moschino Cheap & Chic

Moschino Cheap & Chic’s fall 2010 presentation was definitely the one I won’t forget in the first place. This was the most fun show, and the one where they just didn’t take themselves and fashion too serious. It was all about the celebration of Maison Moschino, the new Moschino hotel. Pixie Lotto, the british pop-singer took the stage and live music was just the right thing to have to create a dazzling atmosphere. The collection itself was very connected to the hotel, and the theme was an idea of different woman who would be staying there. The models was wearing the new collection teamed with either suitcases, a few handbags or shopping bags. The words “Fashion Must Go On” was peeking out from underneath a blazer and printed all over a tee-dress for the closing of the show. Loved this new and creative and most importantly fun way of showing a collection. After the show, guests, editors and fashionistas was squeezing themselves into the crowded elevators to view the hotel more closely or just mingle around in the huge tents that later transformed into a great party. Thumbs up Moschino for a great show and a great after-party.

No. 21 Fall 2010

It wasn’t until I was seated at the No. 21 fall 2010 show that I was informed that the designer we were about to view was in fact Alessandro Dell’Aqua’s debut line. After loosing the rights to his brand and taking a season off, this was more like his big come-back.I was quiet curious since the room was crowded with power-women, famous fashion-editors and fashion insiders you wouldn’t expect to see at a new up and coming designers show.  The new label was basic daywear (mostly) with a nice twist of masculinity and a great feeling for cuts and details. After seeing so much fur, leather and animal dots in all the other shows, it was so fresh to see something as crisp and clean as the new No. 21. To make the collection less day-wear and more high-fashion it was spiced up with strong splashes of colors, biker jackets and a little bit of animal prints but in a more minimal and elegant way. Loved the camel pants and the flowing feathers in the back of the top and dress closing the show. Very interesting twist and the perfect end to a great show.
