Retrospective: A Decade of McQueen’s Work

As news spread of Alexander McQueen’s death, the fashion industry reeled. McQueen’s creativity, his blend of couture and perfect tailoring, his ability to go beyond the average fashion show and put on a real spectacle — all made him one of a kind. His creations were pure whimsy; they may not have always been wearable, but they were beautiful. He was a fashion dreamer, and sadly, as of today, we don’t have many of those left. He’ll be missed by many and he’s leaving a hole in many hearts today. We put together a look at some of our favorite pieces from his collections, dating back to 2001.

Alexander Lee McQueen is dead

It’s with sorrow I have to report that Alexander McQueen won’t be attending his show the 9th of Mars during Paris fashion week this year. He was found dead this morning in his home, just a week after his mother died. Nothing is confirmed yet but rumors is that he committed suicide in his apartment in central London. The lost of his mother made him very depressed and he couldn’t take it any longer. McQueen was one of our times most provocative and talented designers and at the age of 40, he had already won many prestigious designer prices and many committed fans for his fashion house. R.I.P Alexander McQueen!

Breaking: Maggie Rizer Did Not Dye Her Hair for Anna Wintour

20100211 redrizer 250x375 Breaking: Maggie Rizer Did Not Dye Her Hair for Anna Wintour

After learning that when Anna Wintour told the The September Issue cameraman to lose weight he promptly did, we weren’t the least bit surprised to read in “Page Six” that Maggie Rizer dyed her hair at La Wintour’s behest. But when we asked the model about it at last night’s amfAR Gala, she corrected us, in between fits of laughter: “It wasn’t because of that! It was sooo strange when I opened the paper this morning and it said that. No, I’ve been planning on going red. I’ve been going back and forth from red to blonde since I was 17 years old, and this is just one more go-back.” She went on: “I know a lot of editors prefer me with red hair. Many.” Including Anna? “Yes, she’s one of them. But I think she likes me blonde, too. Hopefully.”

First Look: The Lake & Stars Fall/Winter 2010 Collection

LS1 First Look: The Lake & Stars Fall/Winter 2010 CollectionWe love The Lake & Stars for its high fashion take on lingerie. However, for Fall 2010, designers Maayan Zilberman and Nikki Dekker decided try something new, keeping their core customer in mind but upping the sex quotient with garters, teddies and yes, crotchless panties. “We decided to be kind of radical,” Zilberman told Fashionista. “It’s a lot more mature, kind of kinky.” She also said that the decision to take things in a more risque direction was the result of feedback from clientele. “People at parties are always telling us that they want something racier, but in our styling.”

If your favorite thing about The Lake & Stars is the fact that quite a bit of the design duo’s underwear can be worn as outwear, you can calm down: Much of the collection still works that way, even the tie-dyed teddy, which would look great layered under a pencil skirt and blazer. But now there’s also something for those who prefer crotchless garters to boy shorts.

The new look book, photographed by Tom Hines, is equally cheeky, inspired by 1970s Swedish porn. Zilberman and Dekker asked three of their friends–one in her early twenties, one in her early thirties and another in her late thirties–to model the wares. “We chose to represent three very different stages in a woman’s life to capture the changes women go through in their sexuality,” explains Zilberman. (And it does help that they all have great bodies, regardless of their ages.)

Kate Bosworth Wishes Interview Happy Birthday in Chanel

interview party wall paper 260x257 Kate Bosworth Wishes Interview Happy Birthday in ChanelLast night, Chanel threw a dinner in honor of Vanessa Paradis’ new lipstick, Rouge Coco.

We popped into The Mark just in time to see a gaggle of socialites – Brill, Traina, Lezark – squeeze onto the red carpet for photos, but ran downtown to Sundance’s Full Frontal Fashion fete at the Standard before the real “celebrities” arrived at Chanel.

Most of the designers were long gone, back to the studio for castings etc., but if you’re stuck inside today, you can catch Chris Benz, Vena Cava, Christian Cota, Cushnie et Ochs and more on their new series, Catwalk Countdown.

Luckily, everyone ended up at Interview’s 40th Anniversay party.
