Provocateur at the Hotel Gansevoort
The Meatpacking District is getting yet another party spot, located at Hotel Gansevoort: Provocateur, a nightclub in the Bungalow 8 style of cozy seating nooks under a canopy of large potted trees. Rag & Bone has designed the short leather waitress uniforms. And skin care line Borba has dreamed up a few cocktails, which, presumably, will have a profound effect on your morning glow. This week, the space will host the Rag & Bone after-party and Alice + Olivia’s fall presentation. The only remaining question is will it actually give the nearby Standard’s Boom Boom Room a run for its money?

Smile Through Your Heartache With Smile Smile’s New Album
Feeling lonely or simply let down by love? Crack a beer and pop in Smile Smile’s new Truth on Tape, a break-up album that will lift your spirits and maybe even open your heart to possibility—but not necessarily the romantic kind. This Dallas duo is known for blending pop, piano chords and swingy country guitar into catchy indie-folk songs; until their love flamed out, they were also known for their intense on-stage chemistry. Here’s how it all went down: Ryan Hamilton, a self-taught guitarist, and Jencey Hirunrusme, a classically-trained pianist, hit it off at a Texas bar in 2005. Within months, they’d moved in together, turned their love letters into lyrics, formed Smile Smile (the band’s name no doubt reflecting their giddy, lovestruck feelings), and had become engaged to wed. Their whirlwind romance turned into a tornado once they began touring and promoting their debut album, Blue Roses, and both started to feel overwhelmed. Then Hirunrusme met someone else and the couple split up. The devastated Hamilton expressed his pain and anger in new songs that he sent to his ex. She was smitten anew, but with the music, not the musician, and the pair decided to get back together with the sole aim of recording a second album. This could have been a disaster, but instead of devolving into bitterness, Truth on Tape (out yesterday) is an admirable attempt to salvage something beautiful from the wreckage of a relationship. (The tense collaboration was made slightly easier, Hamilton has admitted, by the fact that Hirunrusme’s other relationship didn’t work out.) The songs don’t mince words about the betrayal, but Hamilton’s respect and affection for his former fiancée is touching. Even when singing, “I’m so foolish for believing/you cared more for me than you did yourself,” he sounds more disappointed than accusatory. And when we hear the sad, distracted way he trails off the line “What you are is in my way,” while she joins in with, “Tell me you love me like you mean it,” our hearts go out to them both. Singing along with the jilted lover can be comforting for those of us who have been there before, but it would have been interesting to also hear Hirunrusme’s side of story. We also can’t help but wonder about their motives: Is putting the Truth on Tape a form of break-up justice for Hamilton? Is it musical penance for Hirunrusme’s mistakes? Regardless, it’s reassuring to hear two former lovers put aside their differences for the sake of their art (and they say they’re committed to making music professionally). Kind of makes those of us who have been similarly wronged want to take the high road, too—after we finish this drink, of course.

How Katie Holmes Weathers the Storm

On the eve of a snowstorm that swept the Northeast region and threatened Fashion Week plans, Katie Holmes attended the opening of the Hermès menswear-only store in New York last night wearing a very long, conservative gray coat. But she did expose some skin — she wore open-toed shoes.
Would you make the same coat-shoe pairing?

Wishlist: Monki s/s 2010
Just looked through all the new pieces that will hit Monki stores this spring and picked out my favorites. Love the fact that the brand doesn’t follow the trends in a hysteric way but are more relaxed and have nice basic clothes with a cool twist to mix with their more unique pieces.

Daphne Guinness Will Wear Her Seven-Inch Heels in the Snow; Other Fashion People Choose Uggs

Olivier Zahm, Daphne Guinness, and Terry Richardson.
Last night, before the snow started causing all sorts of problems for Fashion Week, the chic people partied at a dinner in honor of Vanessa Paradis, who fronts Chanel’s Rouge Coco lipstick. Daphne Guinness had no plans to change out of her standard seven-inch platforms to navigate the accumulation. “You know, the last blizzard, in December, I wore these shoes and I walked twenty blocks in them, and then I tried to walk back and it was so cold. And my best friend Robin was like, You’re going to break your neck in those shoes. And I was sliding a bit, but I have a very steady walk,” she told us. “Shit happens. I guess I could break my neck tomorrow.”
But would you expect anything less from the woman who can wear Alexander McQueen’s ten-inch Alien shoes to a party? “If you look at them carefully, they’re not that tall. They’ve got a huge platform. With any shoe, you have to condition like you’re conditioning for a sport. You work out different muscles,” Guinness said. “If you put me in a pair of eleven-inch stilettos without a platform, I’ll have blisters and I won’t be able to walk. There’s no way. Your bones aren’t built for that. Eight-inch with a platform, that’s easy. You know, I could map it out on a piece of paper for you and explain it to you distinctly and brilliantly, but if I do it now, I’ll sound pretentious and ridiculous.” Guinness continued, “I’ve got some Ugg boots. The only problem is I feel like I’m falling backwards. My muscles just aren’t built for flats anymore.”
Other fashion people fully support Uggs in the tents, such as Purple editor Olivier Zham. “Are Uggs the big blonde thing?” he said. “I think they’re great. Everyone looks beautiful when it is snowing.” Terry Richardson had similar advice for looking good in the snow. “You’ve just got to bundle up. And wear your Uggs! Put your Uggs on,” he seconded.
